As any game needs money sinks, I would like to propose a funny and easy to implement way to waste money :

Miniature Remote Control Ship Collectibles !

Basic idea is to sell Scaled down copies of ingame ships, which can be fitted exactly like the real ones for money. They are stored somewhere where you can enjoy looking at them, like a glass cabinet.
The enhanced part would come with the "Walk on Ships/Planets/stations" Update : The ability to actually use them by Radio Control.
Since they would be smaller scaled "real" versions, they could be used for Competitions, Flight-Training or even simple Test driving, in case you're not sure if you would like how the ship handles.

This could also be a convenient way to let people enjoy flying around in otherwise unobtainable ships like Carriers, too, as it wouldn't pose a threat to balance.

I think it could be pretty funny to Test-drive a Panther Clipper while cruising through my Ships kitchen, accidentally shooting some Marsian Tomatoes just because I missed my Pal's RC ship :D
Kind of like "Airfix Dogfighter" in Spaceships.

For more thrill ( and a better way of wasting money), there could be a "Iron Man RC Ship Series", which is capable of displaying damage to your ship to such realistic degree, it actually gets destroyed when damaged by another Iron Man Series Ship (hopefully soon a TM :D ).

I hope you like this proposal and look forward to your thoughts about it :)

P.S: As they are remote controlled, I vote for a possibility that shooting yourself (or others) standing around with the Control goggles on your nose changes your hairstyle to "Messy" :D

Oh dear 22 Cans seem to have made a bit of a boo-boo by announcing that the mobile versions of Godus will be free to play. People are getting pretty hacked off because it looks like they have been slightly mislead by the kickstarter. Originally people were backing the game on PC but it's now sprung onto Android etc and will be free so people are feeling that they have coughed up their hard earned cash to fund a game that they could have had for free. On the surface it doesn't seem very fair but 22 Cans are keeping pretty quiet at the moment so maybe there is a really good explanation.

I've seen some references around to the selling of information. But not much on the subject of how the information will be gathered or the various kinds of information that would be valuable. If there's something out there on the subject that I've missed then send me that way. ^_^

I'm attracted to the idea of the explorer starting option for a hybrid of exploration and mining. Gathering information would be a big part of that, which is why I've been thinking about it.

Specifically, how to make it interesting. For me, that basically means risks and tradeoffs. I can think of a couple of ways to do this.

Consider probes. Each probe takes up space in cargo, so I have to trade-off between number of probes, equipment, and storage space for cargo or emergency fuel reserves.

When I arrive in a new system, I pick a direction and send out a probe. Probes show up on the scanners of pirates, and can be used to trace my position. This puts me at risk.

Standard probes are only as fast as a small ship in jumpdrive, which would allow pirates in the system to easily chase my probes back to me on their return trip.

Hyperspace-fuel injector probes can be purchased, but are more expensive (tradeoff of investment risk). These will consume a small amount of fuel per run but will be faster, making it harder for pirates who detect my probes to chase them back to me (tradeoff of resource management vs risk).

Standard and injector probes can further come in an unshielded or heatsheilded variety. Heatshielded probes are harder to detect with scanners, but are more expensive and take up more room in the cargo hold. Further tradeoffs again.

Probes can also come with either passive or active scanners. Active scanners give wider area of coverage, but are easier to see. Wider area means less time to cover a given volume, requiring further assessment of risk and asset management.

I know that different scanner types have come up elsewhere, but it's worth mentioning here as well. A passive scanner doesn't alert anyone to my presence, as it just picks up the radiation available at my location. An active scanner sends out waves of energy and detects the echoes that come back. Much more information, but announces my presence to anyone in range.

Active scanners could/should be needed to scan planets and asteroid belts. Furthermore, different flavors and quality of scanners could be used. Ship scanners to determine what's going on in another ship (cargo, weapons, etc), vs. prospecting scanners to determine gaseous and mineral wealth of a planet or asteroid belt, vs. planetary scanners to determine atmospheric content and habitability of planets, and so on. Further tradeoffs on investment, cargo space, and risk/reward for speed of scans vs. how 'loud' they are, and so forth.

The idea is that the probes would head out at jumpdrive speeds and do a sweep of an area before coming back. I can determine the volume and arc of a sweep. Larger sweeps are riskier as there is more potential for a pirate to be in that area who will detect my probe and follow it back to me. Larger sweeps will also take longer, and with fueled probes will consume more fuel. But larger sweeps will also bring back more information regarding the location of interesting objects, and perhaps even other ships in the system.

I only get this information when the probe returns to my ship. If my probe stumbles on a hidden pirate base and is destroyed, all I'll know is that the probe didn't come back from that direction. Pirates and players that want their location to remain secret therefore have the option of chasing down and destroying probes - if, that is, their ship is fast enough to chase it down.

When the probe comes back, it only gives me very basic information about objects of interest, such as location and size. Locations show up on my compass. I will then have to travel to those location and engage them with active scanners before I extract the kind of information from that resource that could subsequently be sold.

Also note the usefulness of such a probe/scanner system to pirates who are looking for prey.

So if I want to be an explorer/miner hybrid, then I should need to make some hard decisions about my hyperspace range, number and type of probes in storage, size and quality of my scanners, size of fuel reserves, and the amount of cargo space I'll have left over for mined resources.

Of course, all of this is just thinking out loud. The key thing to making exploration and information interesting is forcing risks and tradeoffs on the player. Could be better ways of doing this than I've considered here.

For the record, I found the probe/scanner system in EVE Online interesting (google videos if not familiar), but ultimately fiddly and annoying, so I've kept away from it in my thinking. But the notion of having to triangulate in on a signal to pin it down was an interesting one. That said, I can't think of a good way to use the concept gameplay wise. Still worth a think tho.

Thoughts?

I was thinking imagine there has been a huge war between factions within elite dangerous, maybe some PvP took place as well. so for arguments sake it was a 32v32 war in a system. not every ship is going to make it out alive, some may be very badly damaged. cargo floating everywhere...But for how long? Can I expect to fly back into the system and still see the remains of that battle? or will there be a giant clean up operation and the whole place is swept clean within hours? We can still see remnants of battles fought thousands of years ago in this world. It'd be nice to see the odd part of a ship flying past you when you entered the system months (in real time) after the battle............

Hello All.
I would like to see a system implemented where you can order equipment whilst in deep space whether a space-station is in that system or not.
So if for example you are out of ammo, you can query your map of systems you already pass through for stations or starbases that supply that type of item; for a fee it will be sent to you by an attached hyperdrive. You will have to sit and wait for it to arrive in your vicinity. Exact coordinates would be displayed on a monitor and you will have to fly there then, using your Fuel-scoops to retrieve it.
I used to play a very buggy game on one of the Amiga machines back in the 80's called Deep-space that used a similar system and it was immensely enjoyable when enemies where closing down on you and you are out of ammo.

Crazy idea I know but I think will be enjoyable

Be it online against other human players or offline solo with the occasional artificial intelligence interruption... can you describe Elite Dangerous (ED) in a simple way to a person who hasn't played a computer game for many years?

The other day I found myself trying to sell ED to an old school friend - and errr… 'glazed over' was my interpretation of his enthusiasm:eek: My ambassadorial skills were obviously lost in translation:S

Reading through this forum I sense there are those that have played all David Braben's Elite incarnations over the years and seem to know everything plus played all the other notable games out there and can compare etc… yet at the other extreme there are some eagerly awaiting re-ignition of computer games via Frontier's Elite Dangerous. This forum is buzzing with enthusiasm, ideas and anticipation but there must be a few of you who can enthuse Elite Dangerous to an 'old noob' without blinding them with abbreviations, 'in- words' and 'you had to be there' moments :D

Hi ppl, as all of you, I was very excited to hear a new Elite is under way because I have very fond memories of the game. Since I really ike sci fi, and since I'm building me a new portfolio, I decided to dedicate one of the illustrations in the series to the game we all love.

Now, this isn't exactly an Elite as the ships seen here are made up by me. So, as the title says, it's a nod to the series depicting something that might be a Sirocco station with a bubble head dome on the left, and something that miiiight be a new Anaconda  cooking on desert sun far back to the right :D The blue ship in the back could be some sort of clipper, while the ship up front is a small cargo runner.

[artistic disclaimer]
This isn't 100% the way I wanted it to turn out, since I've been doing a lot of freelance to support myself, and had very little time to spare. So, with that said, all of you artistically inclined and schooled, please excuse any perspective and lightning discrepancies...

Cheers!
