I'm actually not sure how much using thrusters affects it. I always stick to FAO while in silent running, since it intuitively seems like burning your main drives would make SR basically useless (and FAO is of course also better for heat either way). But there's probably some more complex underlying mechanic at work for the sake of gameplay.

Interesting, there is a use for silent running after all! Personally, I've not bothered with it for well over a year as I don't find it effective. A heat sink or two does the job much better.

Beluga is quite hot. and BIG. maybe you are doing it wrong.... you just need to BREAK his scaning you would need like 4 secs of SR to break a scan and come back... Since i never had a beluga i cant tell you how they fare on SRing. but i believe that a beluga should have more signature than a Cobra even on SR...

Increasing the FSD ranges on all my main account ships are now at odds of 20:1 against. :) More than 43 light years+ on Alison (armored, shielded, and fully armed and equipped). Penny The Python is at about thirty light-years capacity. *With* huge missiles and guns. Gladys The Cobra 3 can jump nearly thirty-two light years, and can do just about anything. My thrusters are all the best they can be, without Palin, or Qwent. Thanks to Selene Jean, my armor situation is similar to my FSD situation. The Painite Was Worth It. I have all the firepower I need to run, not fight. Thank you Mr. Dweller. And Thank You for the Power Distributors. Level 5 shields from Lee, plus boosters covereth me.

This is incorrect. One of the codex entries was bugged and therefore it was not possible to complete the mission in solo until this was fixed in 2.3.10, less than a month ago. From the patch notes: "Fixed an issue whereby the Technology 06 codex entry was missing from Ancient Ruins" I had been waiting for this fix before taking the mission (since you only have a week to complete it), but since 2.3.10 dropped there has been a focus on the new unknown sites stuff in the Pleiades so I hadn't got to it. I could have done it last week except I didn't know there was any urgency to do it. So I think it's pretty unfair to have made this change this way.

HAHAHAHAHAHHA , You really want to hide a 300 Meter White Monster be a click of a button?! So Yes SR does DECREASE , read again DECREASE your signature. If any ship gets closer than 500m they will be able to scan you right away. So while good for cops that will first try to scan you. most Hunters will fire way anyway if you try to run. So is up to you choose your strategy right. BTW npc are not any more impervious to SR... they have reduced DPS when fighting an SR ship. and they need to get real close to scan. So yes it's working as intended.

Everybody's advise, above. I still have trouble docking the Anaconda occasionally - it's that huge belly underneath, and you're the raisin on top. "Better duck!" is exactly the position you should be in. You are the Roof, not in the center. One more tip: I get in the most trouble when I reduce speed to 100 (legal) - when the Conda gets close to the rack, she tends to get sucked upwards a bit. If I just go in at 150, I'm fine. I'll even wait for a ship to clear the grid so I have an open field, and I go right down the middle. Just mutter under your breath at the policemarms telling you you're naughty and go in a bit hot. ps: nice piloting, Stinja!

That may be it. I will ask though that if I am running and over that range, are my drives emitting enough of a heat signiture to allow targeting when at about 1.5KM out? That is likely the issue though with the initial scan and attack.

I'm not sure how it works with NPCs compared to players, but in any case it's worth noting that sensors do have an auto-resolve range which you simply can't hide inside. According to this old (and therefore possibly outdated) post by Sandro, better sensors auto-resolve at around 500m. If that remains accurate and it also scales with engineering, current ships could potentially have sensors which auto-resolve out to almost 900m.

Ditto. I ran into this guy as well, claiming similar things. Personal threats are a different matter all together for using modes other than Open. I may have misspoken when I used the phrase safe "mode" as what I really intended to convey was more of a safe "Space", and not really a Mode of play. This safe "Space" would be a bubble around the Starting Systems, where "In Open Mode", you would be protected from random and senseless acts of violence. Once you venture out of the bubble, your fair game within the EULA and ToS.

I set my mind to getting Trade Elite, then 1blnCR while also having a small, choice fleet with all the (engineer) trimmings. I did that. It took awhile but it got done. I have absolutely no reasons to do anything for credits now, for quite some time.* So I am going to do the Ruins run, even after a "nerf" to the reward. I am going to do it for *might sound corny* the views, the data/story (even though I know some of it from the forums), the journey & lore. What it pays doesn't matter to me. It's connecting me deeper into the game world. I know this is about farming for credits, but I don't see how the mission is in any way faulted, if someone wants to actually do the mission. I posted this because there's another reason to do it besides the payout, which is not the sole-and-only criteria. It depends on where your head is at. Farmers gonna farm, people gonna make up excuses & reasons why something is "exploitive" but not an "exploit." Who cares if people make 128milCR an hour? Cause they can...

Most of the time it's not even a server problem. It's junk ISP's being cheeky or traffic partnerships shoving every UDP packet onto the cheapest ISDN interposer they can find :D

So you're the one who pushed me out of the top 25% I was in there on Friday, and I'm not there today. Don't worry, I'm coming back from wandering aimlessly and will do nothing but farming for criminals until I'm 2mil Cr past getting into the top 25% or the event ends.

As far as I know, NPC's have had a built in pseudo-immunity to most of the SR mechanics. You can drop your temp enough to target break an NPC, like with a Heat Sink, but if they are close enough, NPC's can sniff through SR.

I was doing passenger missions in my beluga, being chased by an NPC that wanted my passengers dead, usual fare. When I would jump down to normal space to scan the tourist beacons, they would jump down too. I would just enable silent running to drop off their scanners and be able to run safely off, dropping a heatsink on the way. Or... So I thought. Apparently, it does not work that way, because multiple times the NPC has scanned me after i enabled silent running, and fired at me, with my most recent encounter resulting in ~57% hull left, and all missions failed... I would think that silent running would help, and it seems to help in evading police scans in the same way while smuggling, but in this instance, it backfired, leaving me wide open to attack. It would have been better in fact, for me to leave it off, and have some shielding to protect me as I ran. Please, someone. Tell me if silent running is supposed to work like this, and I will bite the bullet and work to make my beluga less susceptible to...

So.... I caved. I went and ordered these from Amazon. Free shipping to my USA address, and from there, an additional 40 bucks to ship to me in Singapore. Total cost - SGD 127 or so... or roughly 71 British pounds (USD 93 approx).
