Definitely kills the immersion but it's hardly a cheat. It's the same thing as turning it off and on again. The rest causes things to work as intended rather than unintended.

My Python, ATM partially stripped as I used it for a couple of cargo runs has 2 SSDM's, 1 AB and 2 2D lasers, Yes for a quick blast it is faster than my T9's in a good ring.
I also carry a Krait mk II set for Core mining and a Cutter fully equipped but when straight laser is used I find it slower than the T9 when it is in the same cargo config because it is running less limpets.

Go to meeting with FC, unload trit, load limpets, ammo and repeat above. 3 in one - relocate FC, earn credits and increase trit stock.
Other variant (faster) is moving FC with 2 jumps away (below 1000 Ly range for economy route) and execute same thing as above, but in 1000 Ly increments. One load 190 tons of tritium is enough for 2 jumps near empty FC. For clarify - I don't have fueling sevice on FC, because of pure exploration FC outfit, for this purpose all my ships have fuel scoops equipped.

I tend to be well off the galactic plane. This generally means for safety I need to have a full tank when I move out.
Generally after entering a system with the carrier my friends and I immediately send scouts out to see if there is a fuel system 400-500ly ahead in the direction we are moving. If there is it becomes the next location. We then fill the carrier (if we entered a fuel system), then we do exploration of the local systems until we feel satisfied and jump repeating the loop.
Our scouts can do a few jumps at 140ly but generally cap at closer to 100ly. Even with that range there comes times where we can only go out to 2-4 other systems before running into dead ends. In that case we have to make a blind jump. It's why we never run on empty.
We do run fueling on our carrier as we've run into a few regions with no fuel stars in range of our scouts but it's almost always suspended. As well even without jumping our dedicated mining craft do eventually run low and it's even more likely they won't be in range of a fuel star.

I always keep FC fuel tank topped, this give me 11 jumps without physical contact with my ship - this is my safety guard in case of being stranded somewhere and I never cross distance 3000 Ly from FC. I like scouting galaxy boudaries more than 1000 Ly up or down from galactic plane. Few times my FC was my salvage in case of mindless jump with neutron boost and no return. Yes I know rookie mistake, but nobody is perfect.
With a carrier, there is ample scope to plan for contingencies. Regarding mining, including 3 class 1 and 4 class 2 mining lasers would not have broken the bank. Same with limpet controllers, have a selection available. When you need to, you can then equip a ship for mining. A single mining laser is insufficient.

Not broke bank, but broke Power Distributor. Why 4 lasers when you have to wait a while for charging, my one class 2 can work non-stop with 4 points for weapons.
With 2 class 2 lasers, there are already too few limpets to collect and the shards start to disintegrate (you lose the spoil). Even with my setup, I have to wait a while for the collection to finish after shooting.
On T9 you have more room for limpet controllers, then more lasers make sense. And as I mentioned earlier - my ship is oriented towards subsurface resources.
Is the PD smaller than could be fitted?
Multiple lasers could be fired in bursts, allowing time to recharge and collection of fragments.
This would seem to indicate a lack of limpet controllers.
And that is where having flexibility (with stuff on hand) comes in. If you are unable to fit more than one mining laser when configured for subsurface, temporarily change the configuration. Or have a medium ship set up for laser mining.
If you are out in the black, there is little chance to adjust your situation.

Because 1 laser will depleted most rocks before the second subsurface is cleared. If not before the first.
Yes it is. Just don’t do what you were told for a change. When laser mining you can pretty much mine every asteroid you’re looking at, the only ones I reject are 3 to 5 percent.

For me when laser mining it only gets annoying when you stop. Doesn’t happen often.

I mean when the pws is working you're not exactly starved for rocks in a hot spot. It's not like looking for deep cores and when each one can get you 15-30t it's a lot faster than laser mining.
If you're in something like a t9 it's probably faster to laser mine as it's a nightmare to track deposits on fast spinning rocks but a krait kitted for subsurface would outperform a laser t9.
One subsurface point gives 9-15 chunks, 0,3-0,5 ton every. Average asteroid has 3-4 points. Switching points as asteroid rotates plus laser when no point exposed. Easy to harvest over 20 tons from average rock with mixed technique. Better than shaving 30% rich rock with lasers.
Really? I guess i've never tried it for tririum but when i did find subsurface for painite they were often the wrong kind or not common enough. 15 tonnes per subsurface, sounds like its been buffed, ill have to give it a go again. I mean wait for them to fix it.
Yeah im in a corvette with 7 or 8 limpets out. Its not like you wait around for fragments to collect either. By the time you've found the next asteroid you're just about read to move off.
For subsurface mining maneuverability is one of key feature, because of this I have Python. I see difference, because I play also in Legacy Horizons and filling cargo within about hour is standard.
The lesson learned is prior to going on far away long term fleet carrier trip make sure it is well equiped. In addition to a couple specialty and general purpose ships and a variety sizes and types of extra modules including mining equipment, limpet controllers, cargo racks, and weapons is well advised. Not just for mining, for other activities too.
I can't imagine trying to refuel my carrier in deep space using a Python. It is bad enough using a well equipped laser mining Imperial Cutter to collect tritium with 4 mining lasers, three 5A collector limpet controllers, 5A prospector controller, and a bunch of cargo racks.
But I'm explorer and mining is only auxiliary function not priority. Last time I was in civilization about year ago when Horizons 3.8 works like a charm and I didn't even think that everything would be divided into "us" and "them". In addition, a bag of new bed bugs is included in the package for free. It's just discouraging to keep playing.

- When I didn't have a carrier I ensured I had ships and modules I could xfer to remote DSSA locations if necessary. I did not want to have to return to bubble just because I forgot my toothbrush.]
- You might be able to purchase additional mining equipment from a fleet carrier not too far away. Use INARA or EDDB to search. If you have a bigger ship on your carrier you can repurpose it for mining. 4 mining lasers, multiple collector limpets and a 5A prospector so you can keep firing limpets to find next good asteroid.
- As an option you can freewinder yourself back to the bubble. Purchase what you need then return to carrier. Or decommision carrier and buy a new one*.
*Edit: limping a fleet carrier back to human space +40,000Ly using a single surface mining laser would indeed be a painful experience I would not be willing to endure.

I just wonder if the OP realises that his own ships and spare modules do NOT count towards carrier weight so do not cost any extra tritium per jump.
My T9 may be slower (speed) and use only 3 lasers but has 15 collectors and a 3A prospector but to me it seems faster than my Cutter set up as above, less or no waiting time between rocks, I just laser - prospect next rock - move and laser, the limpets keep up - If I loose one or two limpets or chunks it does not matter.
Pretty sure it's don't play a game devs ignore critical bugs in their activities like mining....
Mining is a priority function, a nano micron behind exploration maybe. But without the ability to mine tritium quickly, you lose out on the exploration. Spending an hour quickly gathering the 70-130 tons (depending on the carrier cargo load) for your next 500 LY jump gives you more time for exploration.
