Current State of Carriers

whats the hoo haa about the fc,when they first came out they complained about the price. then they complained about the upkeep. i use mine as a mobile station like others,i say if you cant afford one or the upkeep dont get one,but dont complain about others who have, but they are handy thing have,as long a you have the fuel, out in the black they are a god send believe me,.

Right now, I'm really wishing I had my carrier.... I've been traveling 30 hours to go see Colonia and Sag-A for my first time and maybe do Beagle. I wanted to travel 'raw' for the first time, just me, my ship and 8 repair limpets. So how far have I gotten in 30 hours??? ...5,855LY's... Exobiology is causing me to spend way more time in each system than I ever did in EDH 3.8.... Scan, find atmospherics, land ship, SRV, scan, scan, scan... low wake to another part of the planet to get the rest of the bio's.... Ooh look at those canyons.. take some pics..... Next planet in system... By the time I finish one system, I'm ready to take a nap. But now I'm riding around with hundreds of millions in credits, so I have to redirect off course to find a station with Vista Genomics, plus all the extra landing and SRV usage can burn through your mat's with synthesizing repairs and fuel...

At this rate, it's gonna take me about 120 hours in-game time just to make Colonia, I can't even calculate adding Sag-A and Beagle... and that's one-way! I think Odyssey has made Fleet Carriers almost mandatory for Biology. Thinking about switching from 'explorer' to 'traveler' just to make it to my destinations and ignore everything in between... At the end of this trip I'm gonna see if it's possible to own more than 1 FC per CMDR, if so I'll get an extra carrier for exploration so I can run back and forth to do CG and bubble stuff.

I have a question about this. 10-20 jumps doesn't seem like much to me, even with refueling (assuming you aren't using a wicker basket attached to your ship with duct tape as a scoop). It's a matter of, what, an average of maybe 2 minutes per jump with the refuel bundled in? Now, these are big jumps in the carrier, but I was under the impression that carrier jumps take a while as they go through a bunch of sequences before jumping and require a post-jump cooldown. Is that not the case?
I think you are exaggerating at 2 jumps per minute, I am sure that any ship I ever jumped in took closer to a minute to scoop, scan, line up and jump, and drop out at the next star, much closer to a minute than to 30 seconds.

Yeah, but I like to factor in my tendency to get distracted and my comparatively low brain cell count. 😄

That folks enjoy things often confuses and infuriates others, who then feel a need to vent

... at least that's my own paper-thin hypothesis, which along with a buck fifty will get a cheap cup of coffee.

My rule of thumb is always one jump per minute, and that's without allowing distractions.

I feel your pain, got the carrier back from a month out at the PUELIAE AA-A H0 Nebula, decided to take a solo trip in a 45LY clipper to the Conflux sites.
A tad over 18K there and back, took me over a week with stopping to pick flowers!

There are players' fleet carriers with Vista Genomics, I was operating out of one (not mine) in Hawking's Gap. Looked them up on Inara.

I stop to scan nearly every system, along with DSS of every terraformable planet. When I was doing that during passenger missions a while back, I realized I was an explorer at heart.

So off to the black I went, and I've been there since.

So I'd like to use my eventual carrier as a long-term, mobile base while I continue exploring the far-reaches of deep space.

I didn't say that.... Mixed up quotes somewhere!
It won't let me edit, doing the same as when I posted, putting in quotes from previous replies. No idea why. Forum fault?

Anyway, I was replying to this:

What's the deal with Hawking's Gap? I'm seeing quite a few people streaming from there lately like it's the 'Hot Spot' but nobody saying why... Is it a higher rat of Stratum Techtonicas? I won't deny, the path I chose (1,000Ly to the left of the Colonia Bridge has been Horrible for 'High Value' finds... I've made way more in the Bubble in 1/4 of the time spent. (not that credits even matter anymore... not really sure why I'm still 'credit grinding'... Got 5B in cmdr pocket and 4B in FC bank, but I still make sure I run to Li Yong-Rui stations to get my 15% discount on a new small gimbled pulse laser lol.)

I tried looking on Inara for 'Nearest Station', but nothing came back except a message telling me to go closer to inhabited systems to get results... as if because I kept getting 'first discovery' systems, Inara didn't know where I was. However when I switch to the Colonia bridge part of Inara it was able to tell me exactly how far the bridge stations were from me. So I tried EDSM and Spansh with no luck... Eventually looked up DSSA and STAR carriers on Astrometrics.
But it was frustrating to not have In-Game knowledge of where I could go that would have right size landing and services... We are 'Pilots federation' pilots, that should be the first thing installed in our Navi-computers lol. Next time I'll try switching map to 'civilization type' and look for white dots.... then I should be able to use Inara from there... or pre-plan my route instead of picking random dots in the galaxy.

Clipper is a 'Large' so you def have to pre-plan that trip to have station that accommodate.
What's funny is the introduction of ExoBio has been slowly changing my 'favorite' Exploration ships. I'm actually starting to really dislike the Phantom because of it's slow turning and horrible 'landing profile'... it won't let me land even if the slightest pebble is under my ship, where as the Viper MK4 will let me do all kinds of slide landings, land on cliffs, turn on a dime... if it only had 1 more utility and 1 more optional slot it would have been the perfect travel ship.
