No Single Player offline Mode then?

Your game is also affected even if you could have offline mode, the npcs would be altering the market etc rather than npcs and people in online, in any game scenario you wouldnt have a static universe.

only as long as the game is running ;)

One thing that does keep coming up is people thinking FDEV will fall on it's rear or that this will hit their share price etc..

Ok based on their last reported financials which some have posted int he forms of the investor yearly report.. but you can also get straight from the London Stock Exchange where FDEV is traded..

As of 31st May this year: After taking everything into account FDEV has a net Equity of 18.89 Million Pounds Now for those of you in the US that works out to (based ont he current mid market rate of exchanges)

29,536,679.67 USD
23,710,939.54 EUR
33,925,871.41 AUD

That's their total Equity ie how much FDEV is worth their current operating cash in may was 8 Million pound (well to be exact 8.61) so again
13,463,609.07 USD
10,807,113.77 EUR
15,463,478.27 AUD

Even if you take all the Liabilities into account they are still sitting fairly pretty and the top value takes into account deferred profit/assets (what people keep quoting) which is basically money they have but due to x or y reason are unable to put it as avalible assets until a later date (And well as people have pointed out it seems that date is 'release' ).

I honestly don't see FDEV closing in a week, a month or the such.. and tbh given they recently signed another set of contracts with Microsoft and no one in the industry is screaming that there laying off staff.. there in a better position then oh.. Crytek at the moment. Heck Frontier are screaming for MORE Staff (If I lived closer either studio and was well enough to work still I'd even consider applying! either as a 3D artist or as a programmer but I'm not).

So the immediate fear of that is a little silly.. And tbh even I will agree demanding they address something now even before release about what will happen at least a year + down the line to the servers is a little over the top.

Besides I think the communities of many MMO's and even some AAA titles have proven in the past that with or with out developers help we can make servers that work and function ;) I'm still proud of the work I helped with on the Linage 2 open server back in the day and the work I did along with a lot of others on getting Homeworld and Homeworld 2 able to be modded. So while yeah it would be nice if FDEV went oh yeah look if it ever comes to it and we have to close we will put it in writing here and now a firm agreement to give the community the server software at that time... Even if they don't, the community tends to find a way anyway.

... and their share price looks ok, down 2.50 on the day but no major drama:

Looks like Frontier opened themselves up to a legal lawsuit. What they have done is considered fraud because they promised an offline mode and decided not to deliver. Upon accepting the money via kickstarter they were required to deliver what they stated they would.

They didn't make a conscious decision to not deliver, the development of the game as a whole made offline impossible. There's no lawsuit here because they're not preventing anyone who bought the game to be played only offline from getting a refund.

All of this has been detailed here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59481

Elite went from the lonely hostile space you can (not must) explore with friends to place where your game universe is changed by others (whether you want or not)
This still feels like a confusion over the scale. It's a galaxy. Do you think other people will wear it out? Did you want the solo experience to be such that the NPCs don't mine anything or explore anything?

It would be of vital importance if david and or some of the senior team at FD to put some compelling FAQ or FEEDBACK to all the angry people who are currently feeling like they have been seriously ripped off and duped. It only takes a few bad reviews to get this game slated and possibly made a laughing stock in the gaming community ( for example the fiasco with X-REBIRTH ). Me personally use player/customer feedback/reviews to decide whether I purchase certain products, in EBAY for example I would always check the negative feedback of the seller before buying or making a bid....
With the game due to be released to the world very soon it would be essential to get the best reviews and feedback as possible to maximise the full potential of generated sales thus keeping your shareholders/investors happy as well, as the excellent brand image that FRONTIER DEVELOPEMENTS have at the moment, the last thing they need for a fairly small game developer is to have a lemon in there cataloque........ I LOVE THIS GAME BUGS`N`ALL, AND ALSO HAVE THE GREATEST RESPECT TO FD AND ALL THE TEAM INVOLVED. ... . So lets see some POSITVE action coming from DAVID.

Now we're entering conspiracy theory space here

The only one which is not plausible (and it would be depending on how 'evil' Frontier choose to be) is the social experiments one.

Everything else is quite feasible. NOTE: I'm not saying it will happen, but the targeted advertising is already in the EULA. What spawns off of that is anyone's guess.

Of course they intended to deliver on all of their promises at the start.

The problem is the length of time it's taken for them to fess-up on the offline issue. They've known that this wasn't going to happen for a long time, that much should be crystal-clear from the comments from various quarters (including the 2nd quote in the original post in this thread). First we knew about it was less than a week ago. All the while they've been collecting the cash from us under the assumption that there would be various features that simply are not going to make launch, or ever be in the game. Sure it's common in the industry, but that doesn't make it right.

Anyway...do we really need another offline thread? Time to move on from this one, it is what it is and if you're not happy with it, go getting a refund is the best thing you can do.

Anyone know how to go about requesting a refund?

I've got a real shoddy/intermittent internet so this game without offline would be kinda useless for me.

Your game is also affected even if you could have offline mode, the npcs would be altering the market etc rather than npcs and people in online, in any game scenario you wouldnt have a static universe.

Not while you aren't playing though, e.g. every night when you sleep - whereas in online, players all around the world affect your game all the time.

that would have happend 110% if FDEV were signed up with a big PR agency.

lucky they arn't and are concentrating their monies & effort where it matters. they might not be the best coms guys out there, but boy they are making one great game :D :D
I honestly think that while many of the programmers and network guys were convinced that things will turn out like this for a while now, the decision to drop off-line was only made by the management within the last few weeks. The newsletter was most likely the next official way to get the news out.

How they should have worded it, and would it have made any difference to the reaction... I have no idea.

We have no plans to shut the servers down anytime soon. This is a core project for the company and we intend developing for it as long as we can.

Michael

Sadly its very frustrating to see Frontier people posting on here but still seeing no formal statement acknowledging the issue.

Forum posts are hardly the way to deal with something this big.

382 reply pages, on an ONLINE forum, about an OFFLINE game from people without connexion... Isn't it funny ? ^^

Yes, because replying on a forum requires just as much internet as a fast, stable, always-on, bandwidth unlimited internet connection in order to play a game.

Seriously, have a word...
