If they were serious about MP / GaaS they would have had a proper server structure to support that, and design features accordingly.
I think they thought they were serious but - much like the forums of the time, ahem - had no idea what "MMO" actually implied in terms of player interactions and therefore didn't design the rest of the game around that. I don't mean PvP/California by "player interactions" there, either; the co-operative and semi-co-operative interactions were and are far more a problem for a lot of the original concepts.

I'd love to see someone make an "Everything wrong with Elite Dangerous in 10h or less" video going over every legitimate issue tracker item but that amounts to self-harm.

The issue tracker is definitely something wrong with Elite: Dangerous. So much so that I use it as an example of the pitfalls of populism.

I think there are 2 ends. The first when revenue/profit no longer justifies investing more in game development, the second when revenue no longer pays for keeping the servers on.

There are more ends than that. The ongoing transformation of an online title as it's publisher seeks to make it a more efficient revenue stream inevitably results in a string of depreciated iterations of that game. Some of these changes are subtle, others are major enough to be paradigm shifts, where it can scarcely be said that the prior incarnation still exists in any meaningful form.

Personally, with Elite: Dangerous, there were probably a dozen changes that were profound enough that I immediately knew the game I had played up until that point was never coming back, and almost as many where I realized the same thing, in hindsight. A few times the new game was better, most of the time...not so much.

If they were serious about MP / GaaS they would have had a proper server structure to support that, and design features accordingly. If they had then an actually consistent MP experience might have been possible.
There's very few multiplayer/MMO games where networking isn't a persistent complaint/issue regardless of architecture decisions. Elite certainly suffers more than average from desync issues and general gameplay frustrations/wait times largely just getting multiplied in groups with not much added benefit.

From a design perspective adding multiplayer can be just a "mess around with friends/random people in a virtual world" type thing that can make anything more fun. There's open world games that have multiplayer modded in by fans from scratch (Just Cause 2, GTA: SA) and the more simulation-y a game is the better that should work in theory. Most Elite careers however are very much solitary by default (though players can will many things to existance because multiplayer is in the game) and changing/improving that is really hard from a design perspective.

The place where it fails the most is again is usually content and the thargoid war stuff is actually where it works on most levels down to the AXCZs being best in multiplayer (as long as no one uses fighers I guess).

I don't think Frontier think they're heading that way. The new launcher for Monday is probably a pretty good example: sure, the current one has issues, but they're basically the same issues it's had for a decade. There'd really be no point in making a new one (with its own inevitable early-days bugs) if the intent was to wind things down; flawed as it is the current one would get through another few years.
I don't know. At first sight I'd say I agree with rootsrat and the new launcher is one more step towards preparing Elite's sunset.

Hide Legacy, hide CGs, hide Galnet, hide Arx store. And hide server status.

Actively discouraging PC players from Legacy unless they make an effort makes sense for Frontier - it's not as if it's that heavily used to start with, but they really need to make sure people aren't using it accidentally.

Hiding CGs and Galnet on the old launcher wouldn't have required a new version (just blank whatever page it uses for its feed, as happened for most of 2019-2020 due to lack of content, and they didn't bother doing anything about it then) ... even removing the ARX store link and the fictional server status wouldn't have required more than a minor update to the existing launcher. It still seems a lot of effort to go to when if that was all they wanted to do there'd be much easier ways to do it.

To be clear: I said "I don't think Frontier think they're heading that way" - they can make bad decisions (lots of them around Odyssey, a new launcher that's worse than the old one [1], etc.) in an attempt to keep things going rather than an attempt to shut things down, and the result of those bad decisions can be the game shutting down. That doesn't mean that the original "ten year plan" had "2021, kill ED with delayed and buggy expansion", though.

[1] Is it? I don't know, haven't tried it yet. I mean, it's a launcher, if it's working I'll spend all of two seconds looking at it anyway.

i think roots is on point with many things but
Hide Legacy, hide CGs, hide Galnet, hide Arx store. And hide server status.
thats a pretty strong mental gymnastics and you arent even correct. arx store is there, galnet is there, all game modes and versions are there. or is it hidden because you have to scroll down (as promted) for it? is galnet hidden in game because you have to open a panel menu and select it?

cant select which doom thread to post this in, so im selecting the freshest one ^^ sorry if a little ot. but there is cg lasting till 2028 in legacy. of course they could easily change heart at any time, but theres hope we will get at least another 5 years, i guess? :)

Is it really that hard to write a post without personal attacks?

I'm using the standalone launcher and all these things are indeed nowhere to be found. Turns out it's bugged.

Please stop the condescending act like I'm too dumb to read.

please dont take it personally when called out for being wrong.
i really dont care about you enough to make some personal attack.
you didnt specify what launcher you use. mine and everyone was working (mostly) fine and showing the info you were missing. you were too soon to call it a doom while it was just bugged. i pointed it out.
once again: if you feel attacked then im sorry. offense taken not given.

Still so arrogant...

I didn't call "doom" and I wasn't wrong either. What's wrong is you saying "mine and everyone['s] was working (mostly) fine". There are even screenshots now in the other thread, so it's definitely not just me.

I'm terribly sorry you can't see the difference.

Another YT guy, Obsidian Ant did a poll during the PP flash topics and around 50% of 7.7K wanted OO, with a split of 25% no change and 25% weighted modes. This was reflected in the forums here- the overwhelming response (75%) wanting some form of change.
Yes but going on our Hotel thread very few want an Open pvp experience.

All ten respondents (including you and me)- 7.7k uinique votes v.......a forum and thread that is a bit niche?

The flash topics were unusual (as well as the poll) in that there were loads and loads of people who came back to support the idea who had left Powerplay and the wider game.

It all depends on the pool, ask my Metal forums if they want us to book Greenday and we would be lynched, ask the same question on the Download forum you get a different answer.
