Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

This shows you exactly how CIG works internally.

The dot should've been projected from the emitter below the barrel in a straight line, because that's how light works.
It's where Star Citizen's fidelity and immersion's at.

But then the people responsible for the functional design are adamant that it needs to be in the center of the viewfinder/scope on top of the barrel.
So now the dot of the laser is put there, because that's the only way your work gets approved.

And then there's the requirement of Chris to make it look smooth and slick.
Thus they've put in the work to use a spline to generate the geometry for the laser itself.

Now realize that they go through this circus for every single feature in the game.
Apparently in SC universe there are no modern red dot sights :) Upsides for red dots are numerous. Constant luminosity, easier to set, target does not see dot....

Like some internet entity pointed out...red laser projectors on a sniper or marksman's rifle are just a tad silly Hollywood Ci~G... with an extreme edge case of it specifically being used as a designator for directing targeted airstrikes...but that type of designator pulses and isn't a constant beam...besides running around with it switched on for hours like playing CoD being suicidally against basic op security, would flatten the batteries when you might need it.

CQB weapons can sometimes be fitted with IR projectors (depending on operational parameters), only visible using NVG's or IR zoot sights....since it's pretty difficult accurately aiming a weapon using NVG's in the first place (no depth perception) but they're only switched on intermittently or when going loud...for the obvious reason that other non friendly folks, who unlike typical Hollywood bad guy portayals, are also more than likely wearing more expensive NVG's than you've been issued with...or have a basic home and garden security system with IR cameras (or mobile phones) and can see it too. It would be like sneaking about with an orange flashing light on your head.

Personally, I preferred having a fitted, button press operated maglite on the CQB stuff...since it temporarily blinded whoever I was potentially going to be aiming the pointy end at if things got all scary and Hollywood...saved having to turn into 'Boris the bullet dodger' when it mattered.

Anyway, the scary shooting stuff was never the point of sneaking about in the first place...the whole point was for all the expensive shiny bits to go bang once we were already sipping our complementary tea on the plane going home :)

They promise everything to everyone, and as anyone with half a braincell knows, you simply can't make a game that gives everything everyone wants in a single game.
I facepalmed when I read the impossible promise that started SC, to 30k individual backers, to deliver their dreams. They should have promised to make the game Chris Roberts wants to make, which is vague enough but not quite so blatantly impossible.

But... if Chris doesn't run the gold mine, who does? Someone must have thought about it by now that the alpha party must never stop. Make new ships, reiterate over "tech", add some bits and bobs "never been done before" for fans to fawn over. And it looks great. When it works. And man, it's got so much potential! :) Would be a shame if someone declared it finished before every fan's dreams where in it.

I have a bit of deja-vu. Did I ask this before or maybe somewhere else?

That being said, people often confuse the rather simpler red dot sights used in some movies with actual laser sights, the red dot sights are simple reflector sights the same as developed for machine guns and AA guns in WW2, just using a simple LED to set a red dot in the center of the sight and not firing a laser at the target, but if the point of view shown is down the sight a misunderstanding of what they are seeing is quite possible for some people. Some sophisticated reflex sights can actually be set to allow for bullet drop and other things that affect the path of the projectile, so yes laser sights in sniper rifles are a no, but red dot sights can be used effectively on many long range weapons, you just have to understand the difference between a laser sight and red dot sight.

CIG's implementation however, what a laugh!
