Ability to construct and build your own ship

That's a clear vote for "no" from me on having player made abominations in the game. Also, apart from Star Destroyers having no place in the game, how do you propose to balance the outfitting with the ships already in-game? If you ask me, player made content always has "balancing issues" written all over it; not just for PvP, but also CGs, BGS gameplay and the like - everything really that can get marginally competitive. People will find a way build cargo monsters that fly like an eagle, for example. There is no place for that in an online game.

Its never going to happen.

Maybe if one day FD makes an offline version that could be modded, then you might get your wish.

There are other space games out there that allow you to build your own ships, most are single player though, for obvious reasons.

Well people built Millenium Falcons in Starfield (I would guess this where this idea comes from). If players can craft freely, there is no way to prevent it, and probably no need to license it. At least OP said nothing about the game providing blueprints for those ships ;).

Making a ship that looks like the Millenium Falcon is no issue, making a "Star Destroyer" is an issue because one is a similar ship that celebrates the Millenium Falcon design, the other is a "Star Destroyer." So no you can't make a "Star Destroyer", you can make a ship that in many ways resembles a "Star Destroyer," but you can't make a "Star Destroyer." It's a matter of intent, the OP wants to make a "Star Destroyer," not something that looks like a Star Destroyer.

So no there's no issue with making ships that celebrate designs from popular media, but it's a matter of wording, if your intent is to make a "Star Destroyer," then someone might object.

The thing that bemuses me, do people hang out in the forums of ST or SW game forums going "this game needs the Cobra III and the Farragut", or rando ships from say, EVE:O.... in fairness i guess i don't understand the desire for crossovers... it's so incongruous and 4th-wall breaking.

There's a desire to have your favorite ship in all the SF franchises that I can understand somewhat, but if you want to fly a Star Destroyer you should be flying it in the Star Wars universe/game, not some random game it doesn't belong in and could never work in. If I was that mad on flying the Enterprise then I would be playing Star Wars Online!

The ability to construct/build your own ship. ...

No thanks - there are games out there if you want to do that, I don't think we need that in Elite.

We do need the Moray Star Boat though...

You know damn well that someone like me would throw balance to the wind and make a ship with like 20 small hardpoints on it and just run around deleting people with missiles.

Or like that one dude in starfield, making a ship with a massive hole in the middle so the centre of mass (and thus the point that the target lead indicator aims for if you're not subtargeting) isn't actually a hit.

Is a Corvette/Anaconda/Python not a bit like a SD, just smaller?

Steve
A quick google says a bog standard star destroyer has a length of 1600 m, so it's half the size of a fleet carrier. Anaconda and corvette are like 160 m or so, so around ten times smaller.

And some people already say the existing ships are too large ;).

A flood of long, cylindrical ships with a bulbous command deck at the front and two large, spherical engine pods at the back is the exact reason why being able to build your own ship is a terrible idea.
You're describing the USS Enterprise from Star Trek, right?
