Ability to construct and build your own ship

Crafting is an area that could greatly expand the game, but not when it comes to ships IMO. Empyrion is a good example of a game that lets you build whatever you want, and it's great, but also the ships have a Lego look about them that would be extremely out of place in Elite. So that's also a no from me. However, an expansion of ship kit options? For sure.

The ability to construct/build your own ship...
Using in-game mats, instead of in-game credits to buy/build a ship - sure why not? 👍
I would love to see the imperial star destroyer or the USS Enterprise in ED.
Yikes! Design? 😬 Please No!
A flood of long, cylindrical ships with a bulbous command deck at the front and two large, spherical engine pods at the back is the exact reason why being able to build your own ship is a terrible idea.
😂🤣😂

I would say "yes." with 2 conditions.
1.- that the design is realistic and has construction limits, (therefore there will be no problems with the PVP or PVE)

2.- That these construction limits will also take into account certain design decisions of the Elite world. for example, load limit, size limit, etc.

I mean... like the real world.

Goodness no...

Also... a brand new account... made today... just to say that. The troll factor is high here.
Talk about a poor welcoming for new players wishing to comment on the game. Maybe reconsider sharing this thought in the future.

I think it's clear that we can't have Starfield level of ship customization, but I do think there's potential room for greater ship-customization variability in this game. It would probably call for an overhaul of both Engineering and Ship Kits, however - both of which are deserving of an overhaul for various other reasons anyway, in my eyes.

And probably also taking a hard look at 'ship variants' like the Viper IV just being an up-armored Viper III, the Federal _ships, the Alliance C-series, etc. and turning them into 'base chassis + customizable options'.

The V4 is a lot more than an up-armored V3 - assuming you want to use it for something other than combat. It's a fantastic little surface multirole, especially for chaining lots of missions together thanks to its comparatively large FSD and huge fuel tank compared to the V3.

I meant to mention that in my response in regards to crafting, I think it would be great to be able to acquire a manufacturing license to make existing ships from scratch, along with all modules too, either using a base and/or fleet carrier.

Personally I've always thought the better alternative ship to a Viper mk4 is a Cobra mk3. Both feel like heavyweight (relatively speaking) bruisers in combat whereas the Viper mk3 dances around the opponents.

Comparing the V3 and V4 is like comparing the FdL and Mamba. On the surface you might think they'd be similar, but they're really not.

That's the thing that makes the idea not hold up to what the game wants to do since each ship has it's own very marked advantages and disadvantages and the strong sense that each ship was intended to be for something. Would the game really be better if an Alliance Chieftain was as viable a choice for a trade ship as a Python? I honestly don't see what this particular game would gain by having fundamental aspects changed at this stage of its life.

More shipkits though? Sure why not, although I don't think more cosmetics is going to be a long term answer for anything.
