Spring 2024 DLC Speculation

I don't know where to put this, but I just learned that zootierliste now lists zoos from all over the world! That's going to be very useful for us to check which animals are more common in each continent and help us thinking of future DLCs! It still needs to update a lot of information, but this is a great start!

An example with the koala:
That’s very useful and I would say it deserves its own thread somewhere as a key resource for realistic zoo builders.

A work in progress surely but this is a great step in expanding the knowledge of worldwide collections.

this is incredible news

though looking at it is still very unfinished taronga zoo one of the biggest zoos in Australia only has 3 species listed.

Even in this early stage it appears to have already changed the top 10 most common the fallow deer was not previously 3rd from what I remember

Yeah, looking through the species I think they're gradually filling things out on a species-by-species basis.

For example, the greater bilby and Goodfellow's tree kangaroo already look pretty fleshed out in regards to Australian holdings:

The koala (one of our most common zoo animals) is in-progress, with only a few Aussie zoos listed for now and only for the northern form:

While others like the Tasmanian devil and red kangaroo still have no Australian holdings listed:

Might take some time until it's a reliable source for zoos outside Europe/the EAZA, but it's super exciting that we're finally going to have a global database of zoo holdings!

Also I am on Zootierliste now 👌, with my mighty holdings of 2 zoos:

Well here I can try to steer the conversation pack into the spring dlc: here is a list of animals I think I would “““need””” from the next dlc. I don’t need all of these at once, far from it.

  1. Another waterfowl species, specifically a duck. Mallard or mandarin I would be happy with either.
  2. I wouldn’t mind any other birds, though I would love to get something like a burrowing owl, or maybe a Victoria crowned pigeon. I find both of these guys fill a zoo niche for me. So does the scarlet ibis.
  3. A South American monkey species, to be specific I need a golden lion tamarin. I’ll be happy with anything though.
  4. I know it isn’t popular but a Nigerian dwarf goat. I need another domestic with my petting zoos. With the camel and llama I can fill in a place well enough, but I just need the “official” petting zoo animal.
What got me to think about this was looking at the map for Central Park Zoo (I am going to that Zoo, the Ny Aquarium, and the Bronx Zoo in august!) and seeing what I could do in game, what I could substitute, and what I outright need.

  1. North America still needs a bird, so a burrowing owl would fill that for me.
  2. While we got the swan, I would still prefer a duck for my duck ponds. To me it’s no different than using an Indian rhino when I need to use an African one. Sure it’s “the same animal” but it isn’t the same.
  3. I need at least one more South American monkey, and the golden lion tamarin is also a huge conservation story.
  4. I need more tropical birds, especially to recreate bird houses. If I get the scarlet ibis and Victoria crowned pigeon that may be enough. Though I would also like some more of course.
  5. I need another domestic, using a wild species doesn’t cut it for me. I don’t care if the call sheep female looks like a domestic sheep it just doesn’t cut it for me.
What do you guys feel like you “““need””” out of the next dlc?

Honestly, you could probably build a Children's Zoo Pack outta this. All these animals could be found in more child-oriented sections of zoos, and could get us some requested domestics like the goat whilst not neglecting those who want wild species. Personally, they aren't my most wanted animals, but I'd certainly be happy to see any of these guys in the game.

Spring: Children's Zoo / Education pack
Dwarf goat, muscovy duck/wild turkey, rabbit, either coati or small monkey (squirrel or tamarin)

Summer: Americas Pack
Howler monkey, coati or small monkey, ocelot, rhea/wild turkey/muscovy duck/Canada goose, NA porcupine, musk ox, walrus

Fall: Feather pack
Grey crowned crane, secretary bird, shoebill, burrowing owl

Winter: Alpine pack
Spec bear, hyrax, gelada/baboon, markhor, pheasant, pallas cat, big horned sheep/aoudad, tree kangaroo

Unlikely, but I think it would hit most of the remaining top animals. Blackbuck, ABB, spider plus old world monkeys, and serval were the main high rankers I couldn't wedge in, but I also didn't fill an anniverary spot so... / denotes multiple animals who could fill a similar spot.

I don’t understand, we thought we would get petting zoo in the fall, we didn’t, we thought we would get petting zoo somewhere in the 14 packs before that, we didn’t. The only piece of evidence I can think of for it would be that it would be a good finishing pack as it’s a small chapter people wanted and frontier can definitely do, why they haven’t until now I have no idea. We can say it would fit with Easter but we can say that for any of the past spring packs. I’m not seeing it.

Plus, super boring.

Cue pack ideas of islands, desert, rainforest, Latin America, nocturnal, temperate, tundra, mountains, and probably something else I forgot. A petting zoo pack is most likely not going to happen realistically since zoo games don't really focus on that side of zoos but of course people are going to cute farm animals in some degree. The problem I see though for petting zoos, we have to get the whole petting part ingame aswell. Much more work than the average heres some ungulates and felines pack.

Ok other than central américa / LAM pack what DLC concept that we have discussed lately are you most excited about?

I personally would like coastal, boreal and arboreal.

I'd be fine with coastal and boreal being NA Focus if we get musk ox, sea otter, pelican, hare, duck, etc.

Coastal for the scenery and pelican, I really feel like the scenery for this kind of pack would be great. Sand pieces like the mulch, sea shell decorations, wooden boardwalks, more friendly pieces to build lighthouses with, plus there are a load of cool grasses for foliage options. The other animals like sea otter and walrus aren’t too exciting for me, but if we get things like a heron, another penguin or a puffin that would be sweet.

Any pack that could give us the walrus! So Tundra or Coastal Pack could make it. A scenery pack with Native American architectures would be really nice too. I think NA is already well represented but I could do with 5 more species (ABB, NA Porcupine, Sea Otter, Rocky Mountain Elk, Musk Ox and maybe walrus could fit too 😂)

More Latin American animals in general (Spectacled Bear would be amazing but I don't have high hopes after we just got our first bear of nearly 3 years)
Latin American Primates
More habitat Birds

I mean, clearly I'm hoping for South America but also I'd much rather it be an animal pack and I don't know if they'll do 2 animal packs in a row. Nor do I expect a bunch of habitat birds all of the sudden. I mentioned elsewhere my wants are very weird right now. Talking about "needs" for the rest of the world and I'm honestly good with where we're at, at least mammal wise. I will always take another otter though. So maybe that... even though one's only just recently jumped into my top 30? Been thinking about the Muskox more lately, never really high on my list but now it sort of is since we got the Wolverine? I mean, I'm not even all that stoked about getting a Tree Kangaroo anymore, though it would be great to get one of course.

I feel like not really caring so much what we get is both a good and bad thing. Aside of what I already mentioned I don't have any other mammals that I'm truly crazy wanting to get in, but at the same time I'm more than likely also going to be fine with whatever we get. Even if it's not a Latin America pack, because I will not be giving up my hope and suspicions that one will be coming at some point.

After getting 3 pigs last year (“last year” that feels weird to say, where did 2023 go) I believe that frontier isn’t afraid to give us multiple animals of the same type as long as they fit within their chosen pack topics and already have the rig. After all the pigs last year were chosen because:
  • RRH - High on Meta Wishlist and rig there
  • Peccary - Quick animal to make and rig already there
  • Boar - rig there and it’s kinda hard to make a Europe pack without the boar regardless of whoever doesn’t like it’s addition, the pack definitely wouldn’t feel the same without it.
Therefore, we already have the bear rig, if they choose to do another NA pack that actually gives us NA scenery which is deserved, the ABB is the representative of NA so it can definitely be included. As for the Spec. Bear it’s pretty high on the meta wishlist (top 10 I believe) and I think everyone’s on the same page of wanting some sort of SA themed pack so there the Spec. Bear can be an easy rig and popular choice.
