Newcomer / Intro first day in space experience

Hummies or npcs? (hollow on scope or solid).
I started before they made the new person area so I don't know what its like there.

Things I had to learn the harder way. The game does not pause, even if solo and not on the menus. Best to step away from the keyboard when at a station. Not that that was your issue.

intercepted by 2 different commanders. was in my starter sidewinder, not much lost fortunatly. Now I got out of that system to find safer spots
If it was commanders they should hang their heads in shame, anyway do yourself a favour and fly in Solo mode until you have the hang of it.

I got some missions completed, safe now in Alexander enterprise. I think I will get me a better ship here.

I assume you're in HIP 97950, not 97750, because 97950 is the current starter system for Odyssey. As a completely new player, I would do two things: Probably switch to solo until I am more familiar with the game, and move away from that starter system quite a bit. As you see there are players out there who are just waiting to prey on new players in their first Sidewinder.

A safe way to earn a bit of cash, is take data courier type missions from the hanger mission board. The leave the ship and take the APEX serrevice to the destination, hand the mission and on to the next. Return to the oeiginal station. Once you have enough credits, (plus spare) buy a maverick suit. Then you can do ground missions (deliver/fetch) to settlements. This will get you some credits.

Thanks for all your advice! Moving away seems to work. Want to stay in open if I can, I like to meet people in the game.
Best bet is to find a squadron that aligns with the sort of activities you like to do in game. (Some are specific to things like BGS or mining or combat, some do a bit of everything.) At least until you get some experience under your belt, and learn the basics of combat.

But if you do insist on playing in open, and you get interdicted - have all pips to engines, and two to system. Target another system in jump range, and jump as soon as your FSD finishes the cooldown process. (Jumping to another system versus just trying to get back into supercruise means you won't get masslocked). In a beginner ship it likely won't make much difference, since the gankers will have heavily engineered ships and like to "seal club for lols" but better having a slim chance than none.

o7 and good luck out there!

Welcome to the game.

It has often been said that just after you start is the best time to find out how to get things so wrong your ship goes boom, this is because you will never have a cheaper ship.

That doesn’t make the experience any nicer though.

As far as meeting other players though don’t set your hopes too high, not because of the examples you have met but just because there are more locations to be in the game than there are people on Earth.

Here's the standard beginner advice:

  • Never fly without rebuy! (everybody knows but it can't be said often enough.
  • The compass showing where your target is, points to your landing pad after asking docking permission.
  • Consider toggling off the "deploy weapons on fire" option in the keybindings, so you can't deploy them accidentally and wonder why you can't jump, for example.
  • Your shield is about 25% stronger when you put 4 pips on SYS, additional to a better recharge rate.
  • If you got very good thrusters and you have trouble manoeuvreing, consider removing pips from ENG which will make the ship less agile, but also less twitchy if you need precision.
  • You boost into the direction your thrusters are firing at the moment you boost. Means you can boost to the side, up and down as well.
  • Even when not (yet) familiar with flying without flight assist, you can use the FA-off button for making the space equivalent of hand-brake turns. Perfekt for aligning with the slot when arriving at the side of a station, and for dodging an attacker (toggle off, turn ship 90°, boost, toggle on.)

Welcome, and see you in the Black! o7

It is dangerous out in space. Just learning to steer my spaceship, already destroyed twice on my first three trips in HIP 97750. I just keep trying I guess. Not sure how to make progress like that though.

I’m a little jealous. You are going through absolutely the best part of ED. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Edit: My apologies. I initially quoted the wrong post.
