Next Gen Elite Game

or another game company.

There's zero chance of that, FDEV own the IP, they aren't going to sell it and I doubt they will make enough in licencing fees to justify that, and besides why would another game company develop a space game that's restricted by what FDEV require under a licencing agreement, better to go their own way and own everything rather than pay another company to use their IP, I mean it's not like this is Star Wars or Star Trek or another huge presence in the space IP arena.

I hope Fdev keeps the franchise too, but we don't know for sure what the future holds. They could let other devs make spin-off games based on Elite.

They tried to get funding for making the current version of ED but in the end had to finance it themselves through crowdfunding, what do you think has changed that other devs would now be willing to invest money making an Elite Dangerous game? I mean this is all fantasy based on no actual solid grounding, I mean sure fantasize all you like, but that's all it is, a fantasy.

Whatever the next Elite may be, discoveries, mappings, and footfalls should also transfer to the new one. Otherwise, it would be a bit silly to present the dream of "4 billion star systems" and, ten years later, still sell the game with the idea that "0.02% of the galaxy has been explored," if none of those elements make sense when a new Elite always introduces a new galaxy and everything starts from scratch again.

Well maybe FD should avoid features like that, not just to retain their playerbase but also their employees.
Odd, isn't it, that the remaindering of Developers appears to be across the industry in general, not just at Frontier, did all of those other businesses (even Microsoft, allegedly) produce the 'wrong' software according to users?

If that was a dropoff of players who hadn't paid a thing since 2014 and it was replaced with a smaller number of players who paid for Odyssey and will be willing to pay for another on-foot DLC I would argue that is a feature, not a bug.
Frontier's revenue line for Elite Dangerous in their investor presentations says that the substitution wasn't sufficient. At the very best, Odyssey failed completely to counter the normal and gradual decay in income as a game ages; it was of course worse than that as it also didn't cover its own development costs by several million and cut off about a quarter of their future market regardless of their thoughts on on-foot DLCs.

The chances of an Elite sequel are high, they trademarked a name for a future Elite game and the franchise is too valuable to abandon. Yes this thread is all speculation, but I have no doubt that eventually there will be an Elite V developed by Fdev or another game company.
Yes, almost certainly. Just not while Elite IV is still running, and given the usual development lead times, probably not in the following decade either.

The kickstarter was mainly to see if there was enough interest for another Elite game which was the case.

Right, that's enough reasons to rethink their game design and development plans for ED. Catering to a declining minority while millions of gamers have bought and quit ED is not a wise business strategy.

So the best business strategy would be to abandon the ED franchise altogether, if literally millions of gamers have quit it...

1 suit's arts pack costs as whole game to buy. I bought 3-4, this means I "bought" game 4-5 times.
Those millions wouldn't pay as they weren't involved enough.
So without monthly sub - players count is not so important. You may disagree showing other games with cosmetics. However, only Elite was designed to sell once without sub from the start.

ED is a decade old, what would its newer sequel look like?
No need. They updated the pipeline and if you check the odyssey on foot suits you can see the fidelity is already there.
(shadows and planet grid formation do need updating, but they are working on it as always because that is what they do)

Frontier don't exactly show their interest with Elite Dangerous as it is,
30Gb update incoming.

"They don't show any interest".

Are we on the same planet?

Yes, it's being called the competency crisis, and not a problem limited to the videogames industry.

Microsoft is a special case, and trailblazed the now common practice of disappointing and frustrating their customers long before the competency crisis came along.

Wait for the patch notes tomorrow and tell me what actually changes and improves with update 18. Minor fixes and minor changes is just to keep the money ticking over as far as Elite goes. Actually making new content, Odyssey sized content, such as base building which many seem to think is coming this year, takes A LOT of investment and developer hours. My point was not "Frontier won't make minor bug fixes and minor change", my point was "Frontier won't make huge content expansions", such as Hello Games have done with No Man's Sky (seriously, go look at all the updates and content that has been added to that game in the same time-frame as Elite Dangerous and then consider they have a fraction of the people Frontier does).

I'll just start over. The no cherry picking edition.

I don't think "many" believe that base building is coming this year. Does anyone actually think that? Personally I'd be astonished, (quite interested, but astonished).

I think some are hoping it is the new cool feature but that feature was not said to be in U18.

I am hoping it is something else.
