No Single Player offline Mode then?

Thank you for posting Cmd Plissken. There are people here who claim that the "offliners" are just the "vocal minority". I feel the situation is quite the opossite. Many "offliners" may not even be aware of the news for the very same reason they want an offline game experience: they spend a lot of time offline.

I understand that you are only one, but this still proves that a group of silent "offliners" (of unknown size) is out there.

I don't plan on playing in open mode very often but when a friend asks me to be his wingman. Yes, many people will play solo.

However, solo, aka single player has nothing to do with offline or online. If you planned on unplugging your computer from the internet when you played this game, well I'm sorry that won't be possible.

And for those of you who live in the Northwest Territories, or on a remote Pacific Island, or a village in a developing nation, or on a FOB in the desert, or an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, or some other marginal location/situation, I think that playing Elite offline may be the least of your concerns.

I will say with confidence that most places in the world with large population centers have dedicated ISPs that will allow you to access the internet, connect to the servers, and play this game in single player mode.

Again, as I have stated many times in this thread, there was no promise made. The word "promise" is not attached to any statement concerning an offline mode. It was a developer goal that they can't meet.

They can still meet the DRM free pledge by providing server software that we can ourselves. But they CHOOSE not to. THAT is why we need refunds.

Well this from the other post:

...
Those who have pre-ordered a Elite: Dangerous release version from our online store and have therefore not yet played the game are eligible for a refund.

Those who have already been playing the game online in the Alpha and/or Beta phases, regardless of whether they backed the project via Kickstarter or purchased access to Alpha and/or Beta through our online store, are not eligible for a refund.
...

Still this, doesn't cover KS backers who only opted for the full game only (lower tiers).

It says 'physical DRM free' in relation to the disk based installer. If you can play the game without the disk in the drive, that says to me it has no physical DRM 'features'.

LOOL yeah nice try. But that would be "physically" and it would have immediately been detected as a scam attempt.

Because some of us like to own physical copies and display them on a shelf. I mostly buy digital copies but if it's a game I really enjoy - like ED - then I'll buy a physical copy to keep. I don't care if it has a one-time activation code or the game won't work 5 years down the line.

And if you have the opportunity to attend the launch event then please still attend and make your feelings known. Don't be silent.
But hopefully don't be rude either. It's a celebration of 2 years of work, and a huge effort. If anybody goes there to be a party pooper it will be in extremely poor taste.

Why not delay the decisions and put extra resources on this after the release?
We will review the decision after release, but our priority is moving the game forwards for the great majority of players, and are wary of producing a sub-standard game.

guys,
i am fully satisfied with this answer and the hope for a stand-alone game in the future is high and not only a dream for who wants it.

I think that as development of the game has gone along, the designers have realised that a purely off-line game would not work, most modern games are expecting to have some on-line connection if only to verify you have a legitimate copy of the game. This is still basically a FPS. Let's face it NPC's are not much competition even to me. You can I guess play solo mode. You would only need internet for initial load of map data.
Do you have enough storage on your computer for 400+ Billion systems?

If you have such a poor internet connection, I'm surprised you stuck it out with Beta downloads. And how have you been testing up to now?

I don't think you should be, because only a few lines away from that quote he states unambiguously that they have absolutely no plan to make an offline game.

Superficial for non Euro or US residents. Those of us living outside the 'core' market areas have less than enviable internet infrastructure and stability - FAR, FAR less and playing as Braben Oh so briefly describes is simply not going to be possible.

You dont know that, you and I have not played the build DB is referring too and so therefore you are just jumping to conclusions.

Ergo, if the Offline version is impractical and has been ditched, then the DRM free bit goes with the offline. So you are talking about one thing as if they are two separate issues. Have you just defeated your own argument?

really, I've tried reading that at least five times and I still can't understand any sense in what you're saying and how it negates what the other guy said!

Sure. And at home or on the phone in my country, no problem, unlimited broadband/4g. I can play Elite or any other game. But I spent a lot of time in neighboring countries, with a few Mb of free data roaming each months, or in place with restricted network access and no cellular signal. For those times, I wanted Offline Elite. Now it will be restricted to home, and will have to compete for time with Eve, Eq and others online games. And why it may be a great game, it lack the 10+ years friendship in those other games... So I expect it won't see much play.

sure not for now... but when all the major features for elite dangerous will be done may be they will re-consider some offline possible plan.

I find it hard to believe DB any or FDs any more... Especially since they knew well that fair portion of backers wants and expects offline mode. Reduced, sterile non dynamic. But we want it.

Reverse engineering anyone?

FD claims that the online game is playable even over weak connections.
I'd guess that this means that only "numbers" go back and forth - not game assets.
Doesn't this mean that the game protocol will be relatively easy to reverse engineer?
With the amount of angry fans here, I'd say it will only be a couple of months before the first open source ED servers are released.
Any thoughts on this?

A small number of people who don't have internet connections then used their internet connection to compllain about it :)

I am reading and posting from my cell phone. It does not offer tethering. It would cost me $40 a month to add tethrring to my plan. I won't pay that much to play one game.

This Saturday there's a meeting in Cambridgeshire to do with the release. I'm not 100% sure about the location and time, but I believe it's a "pay to attend" event being held by FD.

So upset am I about the recent fiasco with the removal of the Offline content, I feel that I would like to attend the event in protest as a lawful & peaceful picket to make it known that we have been wronged and that we're not prepared to take this matter lying down.

I will attend on my own if I have to, but if there's anyone else willing to make a peaceful protest, maybe you could make yourself known.

The big deal is that they removed a core feature of the game (offline play, which also means the game now won't be DRM-free as advertised) a month before release without even a proper announcement.

It wasn't a core feature, just something extra added later on. Offline mode was announced just 3 weeks before KS goal was reached (11th of december). I wonder when most of the unhappy people here backed up ED on KS and how big difference it made.
