What do you want to do in Planet Zoo

As mentioned earlier I'm planning an exhibit for spotted hyenas in my zoo. For realism purposes, how big should the group be? When I look at zoos they mostly have small populations (sometimes even just a male and female), but when checking wikipedia, they sometimes group even up to 80 animals. What do you think would be the best/realistic group size to have in a zoo?
I think it is complicated for hyena's. A couple would probably be realistic. Perhaps max 3 females that are related or males.

Let me check my hyena population - I know they have a weird mechanic compared to other canine groups who just pair up. With the other canines I simply create aged pairs and place them in so that they will automatically pair up when it's their turn to be Alpha. But with Hyenas I think I had to do something different.

Edit:
Aha, yep, I was able to do the mated pair technic like other canines, but only 1 pair at a time due to the promiscuous nature the spotted hyena have. The game also has a maximum of 4 adults.
For Striped Hyena they have 7 maximum but only 1 female. I opted for the single pair in that situation as they are shown as monogamous.

For spotted hyena realism, you could utilise the maturation rules and allow alpha related male adults to become outsiders. But, I suspect the adult females may fight for dominance, so, as long as you make sure that you have unrelated adults in the habitat, you could let the females fight out which gets to breed next and see what happens. The game does suggest compatible pairs or trios ( 1 female, 2 males perhaps ).

For striped hyena realism you could start with the 1 pair and use the maturation system to allow the adult children to become outsiders until the next breeding pair is introduced. How, the additional adults will work then is hard to say as maturation mentions offspring rather than related or additional.

Suggestion: Start with what the game suggests and then see what works when you expand on it. It would be interesting to see the results of a realistic set up. Dominance fights and all.

The times ive seen them they were kept in small groups like 3-5.
Groups in zoos are usually alot smaller than they would be in the wild, especially for the larger animals

So maybe the best is to either keep a pair or a bachelor group (from the same litter). I know Blijdorp did the last one years ago, they had 3 males from the same litter together with another male, but this one got bullied all the time and had to be fed separated since the others were chasing him away when they got fed.

Would it work in a zoo to have both? So lets say 3 males from the same litter and have a separate exhibit for a female and that I could pair her up with one of the males? Or could this cause friction, because they would be living too close to each other.

Not sure if that would work in real life. My guess is males only live peacefully together in small groups without a female nearby. But in game animal behavior is basic: animals in separate enclosures don't react to each other, there would not be friction. If you play in sandbox you even have a setting that disables animal fights. So all animals live peacefully together. Then it doesn't matter how many males/females you have, if they are related or not...

Hmm all of a sudden African wild dogs are also becoming an option... Too bad the lions ingame are so awful, that would have made things much easier.

remaster mods are no problem, you can leave them in with every update and you don't have to update them. I think I haven't updated mine in 1.5 years (I should probably do it again). They won't destroy your game either, since they're just "cosmetics" and the animal itself already officially exists.

Hmm maybe I will give it a try then :) But for now I have chosen the African wild dogs. First time I'm trying a fence for a carnivore and with and angle to prevent escaping. Still a lot of work, but seems the African savanna is coming to an end now.

You have been a busy bee

So I've kind of modified my "End of Official Support" plans for a Zoomaloo "franchise within a franchise" zoo. no longer going to call it that, But I've set up 13 out of my 52 franchise zoos to have the same idea I had with Zoomaloo - some commonalities in theme. Not everything but something that will make it pretty clear it's part of this mini-franchise, aside from just the name. While I've set these up, I have only actually put anything in just one of them so far, which I may scrap once official support is over. The plan is to not really work on these until that time, so I know exactly what we've got. I may take up the "Zoomaloo" idea for Sandbox, when I can add more animals via mods.

I've gone with a global set of zoos under the "Alive!" banner:
North America: Oregon Alive! , Canada Alive! , Chicago Alive! , Mexico Alive! - I wanted to put two in America in separate parts of the country. I may expand to a Southeastern state as well.
South America: Amazon Alive!
Oceania : Australia Alive! (Sydney region)
Africa - Africa Alive! (Middle of the Continent region)
Europe - Athens Alive! (my first zoo with this idea, which has a couple of habitats I'll probably clear out), Germany Alive! - UK has several zoos already so I decided to not add something into there. I may do one Scandanavia at some point though.
Asia: Asia Alive! Middle Of the continent in temperate region , Himalayas Alive! , India Alive! , Japan Alive!

With the idea of another European and North America zoo, that would be 15 zoos in total, 54 franchises at that point. Thinking I could do another 5 so they end up being a third of my franchises instead of a fourth of them. The question is...where to put them? Another South America zoo seems like a natural guess, maybe in the Andes or Patagonia - definitely something non-tropical. Another African one as well probably in the South African region (Johannesburg Alive! ?) , the other 3 I could leave open for now.

Funnily enough we have a zoo called Africa Alive! in the UK

Something in the northeast could work! I already have one zoo up that way, but it's not going to be part of this "Alive!" series. I decided on Carolinas Alive! for the Southeast area, but one more in the US would be alright since it's my home country.

Anybody who can help me out with this "open" space in my zoo? It is there for some time now and still no plans with it.

It is directly next to my largest savanna exhibit so one of my thoughts was to integrate it with this exhibit, to also create an extra viewing point (current viewing points are marked with blue circles). Think this could also give me the opportunity to add another species to this exhibit (currently giraffes, gazelles and ostriches are in it).

Another thought was to create a new exhibit, but what could be possible with this space? Already having sand cats, rhinoceros, meerkats, warthogs, porcupines, wild dogs and the ones mentioned before in this section.

Or maybe something completely different?
