The Open v Solo v Groups thread

I don't think I've seen a scare story for years; definitely not in this forum although I don't follow Reddit. All the "pressure" on this issue comes from the other direction, from people who don't like being ignored.
I think that might be confirmation bias. I see a lot of complaints about how toxic Open play is or proposals for an Open PvE mode. I see the occasional rant about people 'hiding' in solo too of course but someone has usually already replied to those posts.

Oh sure, I'd like an Open PvE mode myself. Not because I've read any scare stories though.
Open Only, as a theoretical proposal is straightforward. It is implementable (remove the options for solo & group). Of course lots of players will be annoyed by this change & instancing, ping & the sheer size of the game map means it wouldn't really change much but it could be done easily enough. Changing from Peer to peer, to server/client would be expensive but again, it's theoretically straightforward.

Open PvE seems like a million little rules to take into account all sorts of griefer tricks & a constant need to add more rules as new ways to annoy others are found. Logically it's (imo) impractical compared to a simple blacklist/whitelist, which the game already offers.

When I was doing my thing against some big factions it was very, very rare to meet another player from a squad that was supporting one of those factions. But I remember one where their leader was so frustrated by what I was doing (stopping them expanding) I switched to a Private Group (& told them) because I was worried they were going to have a heart attack they were so wound up trying to find me.

Open only PVE already exists, its easily done, thousands of players created that option.

I was in private last night in SD taking my shotgun vulture to the bugs and the whole time I was there some dude was screaming out death wishes in system chat against someone who shot him.
Which of course made everyone else who was remotely inclined towards shooting hollow pips also shoot him. Which of course made him rant even more. He was there for hours.

The whole time I was there gleefully shotgunning bugs in the face with a half-dozen other guys just being like "man if only there were a menu option that let you play the game with other people without getting PvP'd at - OH WAIT"

Sometimes a player's choice of game mode, in terms of their expected game experience for that session, was a poor one.

The best thing to do before jumping into ShinDez, Sol or Deciat is to turn off system chat. Srike that, it's the second best thing. Best thing is to turn it off altogether and forget about it.

I play open in general with few exceptions (Guardian sites for example). I can confirm there are gankers at the usual hotspots. I can also confirm that there are plenty of friendly cmdrs out there. The problem in open is that there is no guidance for less expierenced players. And not everyone has engineered ships to survive, and that is totally ok. I did not blame anyone to stay in solo. The mod choice is there for a reason and thats great. The game is almost perfect as it is, let's keep it that way.

Select Legacy on the launcher.

Do you actually think you're funny? As you are the only one if so.

For those who may be new or not know, there is no Open PvE mode at all.
All versions of Elite Dangerous, Odyssey and Legacy are Open PvP and while the Mobius private groups say no PvP - the game itself doesn't stop PvP at all.
A true Open PvE mode is long overdue.

Noooo... that means you're missing 50% of the fun!
Yep. Some of the best fun I've had in game is reading system chat in the likes of Borann or the other systems during the LTD mining boom. Mind you, very few people were in open then too, apart from the obvious gankers who were trying to lure people into open with "Hey, we're all having so much fun, we should all switch to open so we can see each other, maybe do pirate roleplaying!!"

man, when I was there it was mostly just people talking about finding good sell systems and then someone would say "owo" or something and the entire chat would immediately descend into a frothing howler-monkey rage about furries

IMO the idea of an open PvE proposal is impractical, I gave some reasoning on why I think so in an earlier post.

Mobius and other PvE private groups don't disable PvP either, the potential to be harrassed by other players is present in all multiplayer modes with the only deterrent being a potential ban after the fact that's open to abuse. I gave up my slot in the Mobius private group for someone else to use years ago (shortly before the regional groups were created) but I do remember being scanned by another Mobius player while docked & failing missions that I had only just taken because of it. They apologised & professed ignorance when I told them what happened but of course the act was still able to be done.

My ironic comment about Legacy was more about how quiet it is; you are correct that nothing has changed wrt Open PvE (for completeness there have been no moves in the direction of an Open Only or client/server networking model either and there are now even more ways to fail to instance with another player than before the Legacy, Live Horizons/Beyond & Odyssey splits).

IME the worst people I have met in the game are insular BGS supporters of expansionist factions & their actions are mode agnostic. Fortunately by & large they are not in Legacy either ;)

You have argued that Open-PvE is impractical, but I think you consider an over-complicated implementation; FD would be more likely to make it simple. The game already tracks the origin of all damage so that bounties, combat bonds and notoriety can be assigned. So all that's needed is a check like "if source=CMDR set damage to zero". Even the source of collision damage is already tracked: the other day I collided with someone in the mailslot at Jameson, died and was told "X killed you".

Yes, there would still be griefers. Creative people would come up with ways to disrupt gameplay in the mode. But now it would be clearly unintended and FD could punish the behaviour. There wouldn't be straightforward ganking (gankers would stay in Open) and the few remaining griefers could still be blocked.
