DLC18 discussion and predictions

The Jurassic franchise as a whole has issues treating the animals as animals, and with proper zookeeping and animal husbandry, so the dinosaurs aren't really given many chances to do stuff.

Visitor killing animations are not that entertaining, no enrichment or shelter is off, the feeding mechanics are an unrealistic headache...
Yeah that's one of my issues with those games, along with the building being too basic for my taste. So with both of those issues, I just find the games incredibly boring, both for playing and for watching. I put almost 300 hours into the first game, but I could not bring myself to come back to it (maybe if I wanted to get the last three achievements)

The animals aren't entirely static, but I think the problem is that they feel self-contained and isolated from the rest of the game
Ah right. Yeah that would be a shame. I'd like the aviary and aquarium building mechanics to fit in seamlessly with the rest of the construction. Basically exactly what we have now, but with a few more specially made construction pieces for custom builds (more glass and netting). A bunch of props and obvs the species, starting right from the base game. Like five flying birds and five aquarium species from the get go. Then build on it with DLC. PC2 is getting me excited that this is possible and is the direction they're going in.

How they definitely should not be implimented is the fixed exhibit box mechanic. I think that was a real shame from the start of the game.

Yeah, a proper Pteranodon would be able to swim for fish in deep water, and a proper Quetzalcoatlus would move around on foot most of the time. Hoping JWE3 integrates lagoon and aviary animals into the same system as land animals, in a way that makes habitat building deeper and more flexible; Compsognathus may be better in a dome alongside highly requester Rhamphorhynchus and Archaeopteryx than behind 6 meter tall fences and jeep-attended feeders.

Hard question though is there any animal in each DLC that you would trade for an habitat birds?
Yes, actually!
Deluxe: Thomson's gazelle --> Helmeted guineafowl
Arctic: Arctic Wolf --> Emperor goose
Australia: Keep as is
South America: Llama --> Greater rhea
Aquatic: Cuvier's dwarf caiman --> Great white pelican
Southeast Asia: Proboscis monkey --> Silver pheasant
Africa: Keep as is
North America: Arctic fox --> Wood duck
Europe: European badger --> White stork
Wetlands: Wild water buffalo --> Egyptian goose
Conservation: Keep as is
Twilight: Striped skunk --> North Island brown kiwi (moving up)
Grasslands: Striped hyena --> Grey crowned crane
Tropical: Asian water monitor --> White-faced whistling duck
Arid: Dama gazelle --> Secretary bird
Oceania: Open slot from the kiwi --> Cape barren goose
Eurasia: Saiga --> Mandarin duck
Barnyard: Keep as is (my changes here would have been to the domestic breed choices)

So if the next update was an Old World (Eastern hemisphere) pack, and you got to choose between two different animals for each slot, (minus the 3 we already know) which would you pick?
If you want to be specific, you can select the exact species if you want.
  • Pallas Cat
  • Markhor
  • Hamadryas Baboon
  • Dik-dik/Klipspringer
  • Secretary Bird/Mandarin Duck
  • Sifaka/Black-and-White Colobus
  • Tree Kangaroo/Echidna
  • Chameleon/Cobra
  • Pallas Cat
  • Markhor
  • Hamadryas Baboon
  • Dik-dik/Klipspringer Blackbuck
  • Mandarin Duck
  • Black-and-White Colobus
  • Tree Kangaroo
  • Chameleon, we haven’t got a lizard in awhile

This was harder than it should have been...
  • Dik-dik/Klipspringer: It's just cuter, TBH. I would be fine with either but dik-dik wins for aesthetics.
  • Secretary Bird/Mandarin Duck: This was tough but... The duck. More versatility.
  • Sifaka/Black-and-White Colobus: More common in zoos I'm familiar with. The hair job from Frontier would probably be a 10/10 too.
  • Tree Kangaroo/Echidna: Okay, this was an easy one.
  • Chameleon/Cobra: Cooler animal is cooler.
I think an aquarium-only game might be a bit dry, and this is coming from a BIG aquarium fan. Also, many good aquariums have habitat birds and mammals such as penguins, otters and sealions. It would be a wasted effort I think to make two separate Planet games when they could be combined into one.
The irony of saying aquariums would be dry... :ROFLMAO: But honestly, I feel the same way about most games people assume are options for a new CMS game from Frontier. Prison/hospital sims don't lend themselves to the kind of creativity Frontier strives for, a golf course creator would just be bland, and an aquarium sim is... Closer. But not quite. And a bit more limited.

But I'm also inclined to want exhibit-style fish tanks with just a hint more versatility/customization. That would suffice for me for most fully aquatic species. Shrug emoji.

EDIT: The exhibit mechanic obviously would just be for the smaller bits and would ideally offer null options so that you could implement them as part of bigger tanks too (similar to what you can do with WTEs now)... And for larger species like sharks, manatees, sea turtles, rays, etc. these would obviously be habitat species!

The deep dive from last week got me a little excited for a potential pz2, but it wasn't anything new gameplay wise, but it was the new lighting system, like the first thing I thought of when seeing the coaster dive underground and pop back up with the awesome lights physics was “image making a realistic nocturnal house with that lighting”.

If we did get pz2 with aquariums, how would you feel if we did get the small fish that were stuck in the exhibits but with the bonus that they were much more customizable, had different shapes and sizes, and generally were more unique, would you be ok with that or still want a full habitat style system for all of them.

oh jeez, we REALLY are gonna have to wait for National Talk Like An Animal Appreciation Whatever on Friday aren't we?

Four days since their last post, and 5 days since they said "stay tuned". They're really edging us 🤣

This is the calm before the storm. Something's coming today or tomorrow. The sky is bruised, lol (IYKYK).
🙏 "Keep your eyes peeled for: 4 days of Nothing."
I agree with calm before the storm. NOT just in PZ world but unfortunately world in general..

And that's why the entire exercise about "change an animal with another one" is just asking for trouble; the animal you don't care about is another person's favourite.
In all fairness Planet Zoo as it currently stands has also been “I hope you just find birds and monkeys to be ok”. So some of my favorite animals get skipped over a lot. You just get used to it when you aren’t as into Frontier favorites.

For me it's the water parks feature that seems to have improved water mechanics so much. Seeing that I immediately thought "oooh, PZ2 is going to have much better swimming animal habitats and animations, and customisable aquariums!"

But yeah, for smaller species I'd be okay with exhibit boxes, with those caveats that they are much more manipulable and you can mix species together.
