Yes. You can either roll the dice 5 or 6 times to get a random pregenerated name, or pay 5000 ARX to get the ability to rename a station to whatever you want.

I don't know exactly where you do this, not having done it, but somewhere in the architect menu i would guess.

Having a name generator that produces a list of names is far better then just not being able to name them at all. Right now all the systems with interesting names are taken. So anyone looking for a system to colonize has to choose from a list of Col xxx Sector xx-x xx-xxx. Which is totally impersonal and discouraging, and we've barely expanded the bubble yet.
 
That's a YOU problem. If YOU find something objectionable, it's YOU that object to it.
Having said that, yes I agree some names will be deliberately pushing the boundry or even outright unacceptable, but I think they will be few, will get reported and Frontier will, if necessary, change them.
It’s also a ME problem. Could be more of us out there, too!

I'm sure this is mentioned in other posts in the thread, but for clarity, you can "roll the dice" on the name infinitely. The 5 times limitation is on actually applying that name to the station.
For example, you could re-roll the name 100 times to find a name combo you like, then apply it to the station. That would just be 1 of your 5 renamings used up, because you've only actually updated it and completed the process once.

The pay Arx option is another page on the same renaming menu as the re-roll. I haven't done that yet, but I understand that if you pay Arx there's no limitation on the number of updates you can make to that station.

The system does check the name before it allows it into the game.

Well...:unsure:...from my point of view from seeing some of those 'names' throughout the Galaxy, I sometimes wonder whether the filter / checks are working 24 / 7, perhaps those names I sometimes see were entered on a Friday evening after the factory closed. ;)...:D

I still think system nicknames could be a good compromise; hover over the system and it displays the system nickname and architect. FDev could then take the best-most original of those and make it an actual system name. Otherwise? They'd need a hell of an AI system, or they would need to vet out each and every one, such that system names would have to be manually approved and queued months out(depending on the amount of requests queued). Like carriers, there will be a lot of political naming slights/ attempts as well. Thankfully we can filter out carriers from the nav panel but you can't really effectively filter out custom system names and still go places. So, between politics, religion, and people trying to be too interesting, a good thing can go sideways fast. Religious references don't bother me much. I mean, there's already a planet called Lucifer but the other things can get out of hand quick.
 
I'd prefer if aliased names were a thing and users can turn aliases on or off as needed.

but i wouldn't worry about it. colonization is feature complete, so what it is is what we will get. suggestions related to it are just imaginary wishes.

I'm not made of money so only have custom named a couple spots (one after a preacher, one after the title of a book written by a monk) and I try to cycle the random names until they generate one at least mildly related to something spiritual.

I'd be lying though if I said coming up with names wasn't one of the main things keeping me sane hauling things over and over and over again.

I have a theme, my ship names are based on it and when i do colonization, i'll follow that theme for the station names and, if possible, the system name.
 
My system is also themed. One key construction got an Arx name that sets the theme, the others have rolled names that match the theme and build on it (but wouldn't really set the theme alone)

I'm happy to spend more Arx on it, but I like the names, and the floodgates of Arx shall open when construction cosmetics appear in the store 😅

I also like that we can filter carriers because with the exception of the wonderful DSSA carriers, they are mostly useless for anyone who is not the owner or in their group.

To emphasize it again: The universe which we play in is the Elite universe. Not the one far away and long ago or from other popular sci fi franchises. There's nothing wrong with a couple of the not so known names from these stories and it is probably unavoidable because lots of names have been borrowed from literature and history (e.g. 'Nostromo', 'Sulaco', 'Enterprise'.) but it just feels 'too much' and also pretty uninventive for me when I have to fly through a dozen systems which feel like I am in Pokemon or Star Trek.

I think that probably the least intrusive and an easy to develop solution would be that we players can display automatically generated names for stations and the official names of systems plus the owner names. Make a toggle to turn off the owner names. (I'd be curious how many players would turn them off ;))
I'd even pay ARX for that toggle!
