Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I had a quick look but didn't find anything. I'm now wondering how many galactic regions are actually just made-up names. @Sapyx would know but I haven't seen that CMDR in a while.

This is from NASA - there is some resemblance at least… :geek:

I think the in game galaxy is based on older knowledge. Which is based on readings from less sophisticated instruments in our observatories.
Newer observatories with higher precision instruments have changed the image of our galaxy quite a bit in the last few decades...

Why IS it called Hawking's Gap? Man talked about a lotta things in cosmology but the shape of galaxies is about the one thing he never covered. We don't even have a sector named after Harlow Shapely and you don't often get better nominative determinism than him!

I think most of the galactic regions are made up names based on ...

One of the advantages ( ? ) of being a new guy is that I have spent way too much time reading all sorts of stuff about the game, in particular the lore and past events since E D was launched.

So I can link you to a source of certain named stuff (including Hawking's Gap) - in that they were originated by players in the Galactic Mapping Project and some were adopted by FDEV:

Maybe @Erimus Kamzel might drop in and explain why they coined the Hawking's Gap name.

Hope that helps...

Yes but not in one decade, and most of those newsworthy new instruments and surveys are either deep-field (so designed to deal with tiny portions of the sky at high detail, like Hubble (visual) or JWT (infrared). Or they were on some other measurement mission, like the cosmos rather than this galaxy, eg WMAP.

ED does include the absolute game-changer all-sky of recent decades which is Hipparcos (yeah those HIP names!) If you were thinking of Gaia, that only covers a bubble to 326ly out (100 parsecs, so it IS a round number) - it isn't impactful to the shape of the galaxy. The upcoming Euclid might be the next game-changer though...

not many blackholes have evaporated yet if any
the galaxy is too young it is more of an end of big bang event
logic dictates there are almost as many black holes as there are stars heavy enough to collapse into there own mass and form one
once formed it would take pontentially billions of years to evaporate fully into nothing

It seems Strontium Dog answered the construction question. His system is Sector XO-A B1 where I'm parked at the Dog House. Though he named it without the space. I'm trying to shame him into spending 6000 arx to change that.

I try to bookmark player systems as places of interest I may want to visit.

Colonisation does look interesting though. It's a nice option for people who like building type games. I used to enjoy things like Sim City, Civ, Alpha Centauri, and Outpost back in the olden times.

Though a nice thing about colonisation is that it seems to be self-sustainable after the initial week of grind. You can always come back to it in your own time. I'll likely give it a try during an upcoming week off I expect to have.

Whoops. I meant to quote you in the above post.
Hi :)

Hmmm...I've just checked, it says I haven't got enough construction points to build an Asteroid Base? ☹️
I'll have to search out how to get 'em
Oh, had some luck when I took that Taxi yesterday!,,,just a shortish trip to my 'home base' at Fidalgo Dock from my recent Outpost Station. I looked in on Pioneer Supplies while I was there and picked up a grade 3 Artemis suit with added sprint duration, something I've been looking for for ages. I was just after the sprint upgrade, the grade 3 suit was a bonus! 🥳

Dog House?....Cephei Sector?

Jack :)

quark just has me in stiches........
yea excellent series
doghouse one word (slang)

a doghouse hand would be a 2 an 7 in poker or on a mission and given a bad clansman radio frequency or simply in trouble with the wife
ie the missus has me in the doghouse atm
it has an interstellar factors to help you get out;)
(maybe its a more british term? or old one?)
though if spelled with space i think it still means the same or a kennel ( most dogs being sociable domesticated creatures would rather be in your house than stuck outside in a wooden box)

Okay, I accept that. But only on a technicality.
