The material grind has been made easier. But you still have to grind engineer reputation to even unlock them. Yesterday I wanted to unlock Plasma Accelerator engineering, but Bill Turner requires you unlock and rank up 2 other engineers, unlock the Alioth permit, and then mine 50 tons of Bromelite. All things I don't want to do. It's what finally broke the proverbial camel's back.
Play in Legacy mode. If you go back far enough, you could play as if there were no Engineering at all.
After playing from release, and pre-buying all expansions since I have just now acquired g5 Pulse Lasers, and Frags. I still don't have the PA guy. Unless you are a top tier PvP-only player, maxed out engineering simply isn't required. We can dominate any PvE situation without Engineering, getting up-grades just makes it all the easier. Have you noticed what g2 PAs do to NPCs?
My materials problem has always been with Raw Mats. I Mine, and Prospect a bit, but not enough to keep the coffers ful (really not enough). Recently I was introduced to a crashed 'Conda site for raw mats. It was excellent. Go to the site and do some easy shoot & scoop. FDev increased the number of cargo racks available, so it's terribly efficient. Get intimate with your local Materials Trader, it makes it convenient to convert the mats you got, for the mats you need.
Or you can go and invest yourself into a game that doesn't ask too much of you. It's your choice.
