Thoughts on adding new ground suits?

Hello commanders soldiers,

With the current CG, it looks like ground combat is (finally!) becoming popular.
I find the 3 suits very well balanced, and on top of their own specialization (mainstream: Dominator for combat, Maverick for scavenging/infiltration, Artemis for exobiology), they actually each have their place at a ground Conflict Zone (the Maverick has more cells and the cutter allows to break into inaccessible places, the Artemis has the longest jump assist / sprint time).

Now, I believe there is room for other suits to be implemented, either specialized or variants of the existing ones.

One that I would LOVE to see is something similar to the Artemis for the stats, but with the ability to dash lateral/forward/backward (so you can dodge attacks on the ground and mid-air), and replace the Genetic Sampler tool with a melee weapon (like a light saber or Mantis blade, maybe..?).
Less firepower, less durable than a Dominator, but still dedicated to combat, just a very different playstyle.

Yay or nay?

Different functions for them... not necessarily. That would require more roles and thus game looks for ground gameplay.

So, i'd like those only if more gameplay loops would be added. If you want things looking different, where the design priority was not "clumsy and ugly as hell"... now that's a completely different story. But i guess, terribly ugly is Odysseys design language and nothing in the world will make them change that...
 
I wouldn’t mind new engineer suit mods to:

- add high speed data transfer

- add an alternate mode to the arc cutter to enable new gameplay to repair things (don’t even think about perverting this to apply to a ship interiors argument)

- maybe even add another mode to the genetic sampler for the system architect to be able to plant the currently scanned genus/species around our new colonization settlements.

Or to add a new surface speeder/hover bike and some race tracks.



Yes, all of these have been requested by others.
 
New suit variants I would like to see.
  1. Lightweight with just backpack and harness plus breathing filters.
  2. Neutral buoyancy with fins and impeller instead of jump jets.
  3. Heavy duty designed for high pressure environments with power assisted limbs.

Make it a suit engineering option. If you add dash I want it for all suits.
Most of the suggestions in the thread should probably just be engineering.

If you add a sword a lot of people will want it to take a pistol slot so they can take it on their Mavrick or dominator suits. Adding a new suit forces it into a certain role and I'd rather see suits removed and the various utilities selectable over each utility being tied to a specific suit. If I want to scan shifty looking bacteria in a dominator I should be able to.
 
I have six suits for different purposes. You could probably derive three more variants from that.

Explorer: Artemis
Assassin: Artemis
Scavenger: Maverick
Thief: Maverick
Soldier: Dominator
Commando: Dominator

But, thanks to mods, you can adapt the basic three suits to fit a variety of uses. So, I am kinda ambivalent to more suits. Could find more niches but it wouldn't be groundbreaking. Thus, it's realistically probably not going to happen. Until we may need anti-xeno suits. But even AX could be done with a mod and weapon loadout.

at the current stage of "development", only suit i see missing is for extreme planet condition (temp, gravity, pressure... ops, we have only thin atmo)

suit are tied to special tool, is easier to add new modules for setup/role customization, i.e. i would like a long range or faster hacking mod.

OD-E need a rewamp/improve on actrivities and game loops, example: on-foot mining would justify the introduction of a new suit+specific tool, and it will match well with extreme condition suit.

said so, a features we need is allowing swap/remove of modules even loosing/breaking the one you remove, just to avoid to have tens of suit just for experimenting different setups, at least is an issue for me :rolleyes:

Exploring gas giants on foot... well... that'd require a permanent jetpack, unless you're going far, far down to the solid core of the gas giant, which could be below thousands of kilometers of clouds/gas.

Things with gas giants is, at these pressures almost everything* will become positively buoyant at some depth😉

*Exceptions would probably be things like lead, tungsten, neutronium and black holes

Plenty of games out there proving how fun this is...
Sure, it's not really realistic, but...

Edit: I would even be tempted to add Armored Core as an example of mixing guns and melee weapons but...nah, I'm not suggesting that FDev should add giant mechas to the game...that would be too ambitious;-)
