What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

Naturalistic wetlands habitat with water buffalo and crane:

Based on the real life Hula wetlands, with the wild water buffalo and red crowned crane as replacments to the native water buffalo and common crane in real life:

This kind of emphasises to me the importance of a diverse roster of animal types. Without the crane, this type of build would be impossible. So even though we only have one crane type, it allows us a lot of flexibility in wetland habitat builds.

Aight, it's been a while, but here we go. So, I've ONCE AGAIN rebuilt Montego Bay Zoo. This time, I wanted to take advantage of the new South American animals and do a nice, detailed build. This is gonna be a 2 parter, by the by.

So, here's the zoo so far:

Not much, but getting there. The entrance:

Nothing spectacular. It used to be made of bamboo for whatever reason (don't ask me what I was thinking), but I switched it to dark concrete. Nothing particularly beautiful, but it gives it a nice, sleek look that contrasts nicely with the tropical vibe I'm tryna imitate. Some staff facilities are built here, including the trade center, a quarantine (I put them to not get those annoying "You need a quarantine" messages), and a staff center.

Next up, the habitats. Here's the South American Pantanal, featuring capybaras and Baird's tapirs:

I actually bred the capybaras and, to my surprise, we had a white one. I named her Flurry and kept her in storage for later on...

Right across the South American Pantanal is the Amazon Diner, which still needs a sign and an improved interior. The side of the restaurant has windows that allow diners to look directly into another habitat, the South American Canopy, which houses white-faced sakis and collared peccaries. You can see the mesh:

I'm overall proud with the result, but would need some pointers to design interiors (I'm not gonna show pics because a 3 year old can do better than me)

Moving on, we have the South American Pampas, housing greater rheas, maned wolves, and giant anteaters:

Their water source is actually connected to the Pantanal, so it makes it much easier to clean. My only issue is that, as you can see, a ton of guests crowd on the bridge and stress out the anteaters. That's why I have so much tall grass, but the AI isn't telling the anteaters to hide; they just run to the guests. I put "Do not disturb" signs, which helped a bit, but still...

So, next to the Pampas is the ocelot habitat:

Inspired by the Houston Zoo jaguar enclosure, the ocelots can use a little bridge to walk over guests. They also have a sleeping area over the guest viewing area for maximum privacy. I also had to painstakingly put mesh all over the top, both to keep the ocelots from escaping and also for realism. Here's an up-close pic:

That took forever...

Right in front of the ocelots and behind the Pantanal, I have the bush dogs:

I think it came out quite nicely. They require more grass than I'd have liked, but it's fine. Before this open habitat, I actually had it completely enclosed in a building, but I didn't like how it felt and changed it to what it is now.

And finally, the stars of South America, the spectacled bears:
20250620162253_1.jpg

I like building for bears and most of my builds for them are very similar, but bears are among my favorites.

Most of these animals I hadn't used yet, including the bear. So, with adding these I was able to complete their research, too. Now I'm missing the research for the Palla's cat, markhor, the coyote, and the bighorn sheep...

Stay tuned for part 2...

Ok, now part 2. These are a little more detailed pics. So, 1st up is the Canopy:

The sahde structure gives a nice tropical vibe. I think this might be my favorite build so far. The monkeys are lovely and I wish we had more...

Next, here's part of the Pampas:

My maned wolves. And from the bridge, we see:
20250620162431_1.jpg

That orange building is where the animals sleep. We could actually have guests go in and peek through the mesh to see them, but the inside is bland so it wasn't worth showing.

On the bridge, if you turn around, you get a nice view of the Pantanal:
20250620162415_1.jpg

1 of my tapirs is jumping instead of swimming for whatever reason.

Now here's a slightly elevated view of the bush dogs:
20250620162454_1.jpg

I dunno if it's deep enough for them to deep dive, but nonetheless it's still cool to see a water loving dog. In order to raise their foliage need without eliminating traversable area, I used large bushes and sunk them into the ground. It also looks nicer, too.

Next up, a nice pic of the ocelot using the bridge:
20250620162641_1.jpg

I love the model. However, I think they're glitched. They seem to slow-mo jump and do this weird little pitter-patter with their feet after a jump. Hopefully it's fixed.

And finally, a panoramic shot of the bears:

Now, I wanted to add an overgrown look to the outside boundaries, so I just lumped several random tropical plants together, including ferns and bamboo and palms, and placed these stamps outside the general area. It's both to immerse players that they're in the Jamaican jungle and also to add some coolness to the area itself

🌵 Started on the Desert House in OakWood Zoo inspired by the Lincoln Park Zoo primate house
IMG_2409.jpeg

This house will include a lot of smaller critters from Africa including:
  • Honey Badgers
  • Fennec Foxes
  • Meerkats
  • African Spurred Tortoise
  • African Crested Porcupine
  • Sand Cat
  • Caracal (maybe)
The plan is to finish the front of the building that will hold those first 2 animals, then return to South America to finish the pavilion (capybara, caiman, insect hall). Saving the rest of the Asia Pack species for when I finish South America.
