New ship: Panther Clipper

an “optimised” version rack that fits more in less space vs just giving it a bigger slot that no other ship has anyway …

I wonder how this will go down when transporting large numbers of injured people in cargo in future evac scenarios? Will the evacuees be happy with "spatial compression"?

Honestly, this is the one that most tempts me to buy of all the one so far, especially the stellar edition. The prospect of spawning this in wherever I need it is pretty dang amazing. Almost TOO amazing, it almost makes me think that there should be a cooldown or a delay on the spawning to make it more balanced.

Where exactly? In the last five pages the most 'divisive' comment in support of the Panther design is someone saying that much more cargo would've been bad design.

On the flip side, those of us who accurately predicted what we were going to get and are happy with it are somehow being told relentlessly that we have a superiority complex and don't like fun. Moreover, every effort to have a conversation about anything but cargo capacity in this thread has been derailed again and again. At this point I wish there was a separate thread just for griping about the Panther's cargo capacity.
I agree, people need to calm down.

In the end, this turned out all right.

I would very much liked it to be 2K+, but it is what it is - and 1200 vs so far 800 means we'll need 10 deliveries instead of 15. Not bad.
Plus, we have received those specs today, which might have been postponed more - so the uncertainty is over.
And we have the exact date.

Not bad.

I will win the game on 22nd.

I read the same statements when the Corsair, Python MkII and T8 were released for Arx.
Yep, there are a few here who adamantly refuse to spend their hard-earned on Arx for ships, and repeat the same with every new release.
Another example of the so called 'echo chamber'.
It is a tiny community.
Everyone here says they won't pay ARX.
Many can't wait to spend their Arx, some are even going to buy the PC as their first Arx purchased ship! (As you have indicated you may)
I won't be paying Arx for the PC, yet did for each previously released ship, as I don't consider it provides a tenner's worth of value.
Apparently a few others here feel about the same.

But, on the whole, the majority of this community who have contributed their opinion, consider the PC to be 'just right' and are eager to spend.

Apparently the "specialised" racks will be more of a feature in other ships ? Why ? We have military racks and we used to have passenger only racks and they weren't all that popular. Ship looks nice and will get one in Oct Nov time . No early access
That was my thought when I heard it too. In case of the Panther it works, although it restricts you to fuel tanks if you want to use it as something else than a hauler/miner. But when I think back to the Beluga, that one became actually better at it's intended role when the restrictions were removed, since it can now equip a size 5 shield and have four size 6 cabins.
This is NOT a competitive game.
Wrong. Community goals are quite competitive, BGS is competitive, Powerplay is competitive.

Yep. I came to this thread to find out which is correct. I hope this gets sorted with reliable facts soon.
"Soon" in this case means the 22nd of July, when it comes into the game and actual testing videos come online. Maybe a week before that, if content creators get access a week early and clearance to talk about it.

Hmm. There is a scenario which seems to fit both Frontier's wording and the larger capacity being claimed by some:

1. The Panther has two size 7 and two size 8 slots. Of these, one size 7 and one size 8 are restricted to cargo racks or fuel tanks only (so you can't have both a size 8 shield and a size 8 fuelscoop, for instance).

2. There is a new module, the Optimised Cargo Rack, available in two sizes (7 and 8), offering 50% more capacity, that can only be fitted to the Panther.

3. These will fit any size 7 or 8 slots on the Panther, not just the restricted ones.

Analogy: Saud Kruger ships and Luxury passenger cabins. These can only be fitted to SK ships, but even when these had restricted slots, we could still fit Luxury cabins in unrestricted slots too.

If true, that would add 192t to previous calculations.

On a note unrelated to the cargo capacity - I've seen some talk* thinking the PC2 will have Cutter-like speeds because of its size 8 thrusters, but are we sure about that?

The way I recall it described was more akin to the T9 and the footage of it leaving the mail slot (NPCs are not getting past that... they already screw up traffic in solo instances without any player-caused interference, sometimes) looked an awful lot like unengineered E-rated T9esque speed. Could of course still change but I'm not sure an expectation of "It can move like the Cutter in a straight line" should be held. I definitely won't...

My point was it's 50% better in cargo capacity than the best large multi-role ship we currently have. I would trade speed and toughness (and even more - weapons) - but for more cargo.
What I personally would beg FDev for is all four big slots being cargo-only special. This shouldn't be a multi-role flying fortress, this should be a damn super cargo ship.

With the original Panther Clipper cargo capacity in mind, I personally hoped for around 1400t unshielded.
At 1000+ tonnes shielded, It is a super cargo ship that can also defend itself and that is exactly what the original ship was. It's not a 2000+ tonne ship that can only haul cargo and is a sitting duck, the original wasn't that either.
