What's This?

Thanks for replying. It is nice work, I like it.

Are you still going to keep us in the dark about what it is though?? Or can I take it from your comments that it was a generic ship being used to develop ideas and therefore has no name?

I wouldn't call it generic, but it is just one design that came up while developing ideas, this one just managed to get into the newsletter. Hope that helps withnail.

I hope the contents of the next newsletter hasn't just been leaked. It would be a shame if it had, as I really enjoy the surprises each week/fortnight/month? I've tried not to look at the pics just in case, but couldn't help seeing what some of them were.

If it is stuff from the next newsletter, or stuff that was going to go on a future newsletter, I'd recommend deleting Gimi's post and giving him a gentle reprimand.

If not, I'll be right back here to look at the pretty pictures.

I have known about those pictures for a while (weeks). They are posted on the concept artists personal portfolio pages on various web sites. They are certainly not new, and as I said, at least two of them have been used in part to make the banners in Newsletter #2.

If I have done something wrong, or if they are a part of a future newsletter, I'm sincerely sorry and I will delete them immediately.

Question

I still have a few more pictures I have found, although I think they pre-date the Kickstarter, so I don't think they are relevant for Elite: Dangerous. But they are marked as belonging to Frontier and they do have a space theme, so who knows.

Ashley or Michael, are you OK with this. I thought it might create some debate and speculation, which I think is fun.

Cheers. Yes it is.

I find the evolution of the art and design of the ships very interesting and enjoy seeing this stuff in the newsletters. :)

Why? They're only pictures... no need for the cattle-prods.

If it's newsletter stuff, then leaking it early serves no purpose. It would merely have lessened the enjoyment I got from reading the newsletter. I enjoy the anticipation, and the impact of seeing the new pictures all nicely arranged.

If it's nothing to do with the newsletters, then I want to see more, and applaud Gimi for bringing them to my attention.

I actually agree with this. I assumed (i know, very dangerous) that it was ok to post them on the forum since they were published some time ago, by the artists themselves.

None of those images will be used in the newsletter, so no need to worry. Most of them are examples of pre-Kickstarter development on ED and as you can see from the difference between this Imperial Fighter and the design of the one we eventually went with, development has come a long way since then.

If these images are from our teams' portfolios then I would assume they have been approved for public view. If you want to check with me first for a particular image you come across though, just pm me.;)

Not sure what you mean.
I think Ashley is referring to this picture which I asume is a very early proposed design for an Imperial Fighter based on the file name (imperial-fighters.jpg)

Compared to the Imperial fighter presented in Newsletter #3:

Interesting development, don't you think?

It seems I got my wires crossed then.

But yes, it is an interesting development.

Key to interesting development of shapes and designs in games is to start with the broadest base early and then refine down. So that was one of the many directions considered for the imperial fighter at the beginning, then heartless pruning comes in, and the strongest design comes through.

The Millennium falcon's design evolution is a really interesting example of the spaceship design process.

May I make a request for future newsletters? Can you please show us an unnamed ship that you are thinking of putting into the game for us to guess what it is - maybe a few stats to help narrow it down or possibly a multiple choice and you can reveal its identity in the following newsletter?

All these pictures are awesome! It's interesting to watch the development process, seeing how the designers come up with various ideas, then whittle them down to the finished article. Even those containers look pretty detailed!

I like this idea... Think it would be a real talking point.

:D

Well, we can start with what has already been shown in the newsletters so far while we wait for Ashley to pick up on this idea. Have a quick look at this:

I may well be mistaken, but I think there are three concepts and at least one ship (The Hunter) we have never heard about in those two banners taken from the newsletters.

I kind of hope that the hunter ship is a variant Imperial fighter. One of my favourite things from the TIE Fighter game is that alongside the standard ship, you got the TIE Bomber, and the TIE Interceptor and TIE Defender. You also got the TIE Avenger, but I didn't like that design.
