How does refueling work?

I've not been playing much during beta but have had a few hours tonight.

I missed Elite first time round but loved it's second incarnation, Frontier. In that game if I aimed for a system out of my drive's reach I would bring along a few tonnes of extra hydrogen fuel. I couldn't work out tonight how to refuel with the hydrogen fuel in my cargo hold and had to find a station to refuel before jumping again.

It's likely that I missed something obvious but if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

You can't use fuel in your cargo hold to refuel your ship's tanks, the compartments are just not connected. It's a new design decision, and there's some purpose behind it (probably to make you get a fuel scoop and learn how to use it).

Fuel scoop, or refuelling at a station are the methods used. For a fueld scoop, you need to buy this at a station, then fly near a star (typically around 100% heat level or thereabouts) in supercruise. Take care not to go too close to the star as you'll start to suffer heat damage, you'll be notified when the refuelling is completed.

In a nutshell, you missed Elite in 1984 :) Original Elite only refueled at stations or at stars using fuel scoops. ED does the same thing. The Hydrogen Fuel you carry in your cargo hold is now just trading commodity - you can't use it yourself.
