What ships are we getting in the 'Big Release'?

Fer De Lance for the win! Been waiting to fly this ship since 1984!

However don't rush it, us old timers want the ship they talked about back then. A "palace in space" inside, designed to live out of for long periods. There are a lot of us waiting for this baby.

I'll be surprised if there are 25 at launch. A few more than what we have now would be nice.

I was not implying that we would get 25 at launch, merely that DB had said that in a video previously. I actually believe we will be getting none.

I want the Geko. The Atari ST version. That sleek winged baby has my name all over it :)

what are we supoce to do with 25 ships that we cant already? the more of them you have the less of a difference between them. makes more sense if you could walk in them, that wont happen for a while atleast.

Because at the moment you can not 'Blaze your own trail'. You literally have to 'Blaze the same trail as everybody else'. More small ships would create a sense of choice to compare with the choice you have of where to go in the expasive galaxy. We have a huge galaxy but we are actually very much boxed into a growth progression model by the lack of choices in ship design. It is alsmost inevitable you will fly a hauler for example. This should not be the case in a game thats biggest claim boasts being free to do what you like. When the 30 ships arrive they may well squash this problem like a bug and that is my hope. But IMO at least 9 of those 17 missing ships should be small Sidewinder - Cobra sized craft. We already have loads of big ships!

I think you're missing the point. What they mean by 'blaze your own trail' is you can trade, bounty hunt, be a pirate, be a courier, etc. and there is a ship/equipment configuration that allows you to fulfil that role. There isn't supposed to be a linear progression from Sidewinder to Anaconda for whatever trail you blaze, but I do agree with you that more ships would give greater variety, what we have now is not much more than bare bones. I'm hoping the Mamba makes an appearance at some point...

I don't think I am missing the point at all. To me 'Blaze your own trail' (and it is only a catchphrase and thus its intention is designed to inspire what every the listener themselves desire) actually means the freedom to do what you want. You are putting it in a box and presenting that box to me as your own interpretation. The truth is 'Blaze your own trail' does not mean anything and everything at the same time. It depends in the listeners view. Thats the whole point of catch phrases like 'I'm lovin it' and 'because your worth it'. They actually don't say anything. You fill in the blanks and thus are whats known as a catch all.

Not feeling like I am being railroaded is a major factor in my sense of being free to do whatever I want. The inevitability of flying a hauler and then a cobra and then a type 6 like every single other player in this humongous galaxy does not inspire thaughts of total freedom to me. It just makes the game feel very samey. That is why these extra 17 ships are iportant to the game. There are tons of other features that are badly needed going forward. But the ships are very important too. FD obviously feel the same. That is why they are giving us 30!

You've lost me?

I agree with Orfeboy. At the moment, it feels a bit like I have to progress a certain way to get to the bigger more expensive ships. There's a big leap from a sidewinder or eagle to the Cobra on up.

One thing I think might also help is when liveries/decals become available. Right now, I feel like I am flying a ship that is just like everyone else's. Once I can change the color or through a sticker on it, at least even if it's the same ship, it can be a bit more personal.

Moray Starboat (obviously)

Would also love to see the ol' Interplanetary Shuttles, and perhaps the MK:1 Viper Defence Craft?

The Imperial Trader also one of my favourite ships ever (Courier's nice too)

I’m sure we have a few surprises on the 16th. It cant simply be it’s the 16th thanks everybody go out and explore the game is now regarded as Retail version 1.

I’m sure something has been held back to give everyone a nice Christmas present. David likes a bit of showmanship.

I would say he is reading this right now in a major face-palm :) "Oh no! We forgot Christmas what are we going to do?" No pressure now David, no pressure... :)

Well he always said the Krait was a simple shape.

Get on with it then boys...

Yeah, I can see it now. Thousands of Kraits flying around the galaxy come the 16th... :) BUt seriously, if I remember correctly the data sheet from the original Elite said the Krait was an obselete design. We can't have a thousand new Krait owners come the 16th can we? Can we? Arghhhh :)

You can roll your eyes all you want, but the official statement has been that Gamma through to Final is all about bug fixing and tweaking. So my guess is still zero new ships for release.

Having said that, I still hope to be proven wrong, but if it were my money on the line, I wouldnt bet on it. Though apparently the storyline will be in, but we dont know if that means added content or just "unlocked" content that is already in (i.e. they'll make use of server side narrative text and objects already in-game).

He was rolling his eyes because that is what I have been saying and we were discussing all through this thread. I think he just thought we had gone round in a circle. There was no malice in it.
