I am using extended mode.

Extended as the Direct HMD seems to flicker a lot at the moment

i5-2500 k 3.3 Ghz Base OC´ed 4.2 Ghz
Gigabyte Windforce GTX 760 OC
Corsair 8 GB DDR-3 RAM
Windows 7

I run it in Extended Mode at 1920x1080p. Set everything to Medium, Oculus Quality maxed ( to be able to read at least something :D ), Bloom off.
Experiencing small judder when playing the 3rd to last Tutorial.

I ordered now a i7-4790 and going to buy a GTX 970 as I "hate" :D to play games below max´ed. Posting the results then

i7 4770K, Asus Strix GTX970, 8GB RAM, Windows 8.1

Shadows set to Low (because of massive stuttering) and everything else is maxed out I think. Runs quite good but I'm still getting massive stuttering in supercruise.

So, what is the consensus? Is dual 980s in SLI better than one? Is there *NO* introduced latency due to SLI? I am getting mixed messages here. :)

For what it is worth, I could have sworn I read a post/article on SLI and Rift and the message was that until VR drivers arrive, it will not work well. (Think it was Carmack stating it, but it's just a vague memory so take it for what it is worth.) That in itself is the entire reason there is just one card in the VR rig at the moment. If someone can make the case for SLI working well, it is definitely something I would want to test both for ED and other stuff.

I believe you are correct, I think SLI/Crossfire introduces 1 frame of latency. When testing out Alien Isolation in VR with single and then dual 280x, I can notice a slight increase in the tracking latency when moving my head, but the framerate remains at 75fps. I think the mixed results on some saying it works fine and others saying its unplayable, is just the difference tolerances people have towards the delay and getting motion sickness or a jarring feeling.

I find latency "acceptable" to a certain point, and then its too much. So it really comes down to the individual.

I once tried it with 970 SLI. With the Oculus Rift there is basically no tolerance for more latency. 1 frame is just to much IMO.

i5-3570k - @ 3.40 ghz, overclocked to 4.20 ghz
8gb Ram
2 x 970 Windforce G1 Gaming (not overclocked) in SLI
OS - Win 7 64bit
Res 2560 x 1440
Settings on ULTRA
Extended mode

Smooth as you like....no stutter.

i7 4770K @ 4.6GHz
Asus Maximus VI Extreme-Z87
EVGA GTX 780ti SLI x3, Custom VBIOS
Corsair Dominator Platinum @ 2400MHz, 8GB
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit

Have downsampled to 2560x1440 with all settings up the highest excluding Blur (OFF). I still get some juddering in hyperdrive or as a system is loaded but its only for a split second. Playing in extended mode.

I am running in SLI and it is flawless

Same here. My old gfx card was a r9280x so single card, the day i moved to 970SLI i didn't experience added latency. It's perhaps noticable by some people with low tolareance but for me and few other friends it's very good.

David.. you run 3x780ti in SLI? I've actually thought about buying a third. Does it make a big difference over two?

Indeed, it's 13.3ms worth of latency at 75fps.
Some people may be OK with that, some won't be. I personally would prefer to run the game on low on a single card than high on multiple cards.

As I have said many times in the past SLI is not optimal for VR due to the added latency of AFR. This is OVR's official line on SLI and VR too.

OVR have been working very very hard to reduce the motion to photon latency in VR and by using SLI you are adding 13.3ms back into that pipeline.

If you are OK with it or cannot perceive it then more power to ya.

I'm running maxed out with the Razer Blade "14 (2014)

- NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 870M (3GB GDDR5 VRAM, Optimus™ Technology)
- 8GB onboard memory (DDR3L-1600MHz)
- 512GB SSD (SATA M.2)
- Running at 1920x1080
