Instant Gratification Gaming

Younger gamers have less context to work with.

They never got excited by discovering that you could use shields on asteroids on the Atari 2600.

This was my first introduction to space simulation!

Hitting 75% throttle (bind a key to it) has the same effect but does it with perfect efficiency and with no required intervention. You may prefer the manual flying option though of course.

Manual throttle control gives you an ability to increase speed when you are slowed down by a planet on approach, other than that 75% throttle key is indeed easier.

The assumption that anybody with a different opinion than yours, is a whiny spoiled brat, just because you think that you're the older, or smarter than the others does not make you a better person.
getting tired of seeing these threads for free insults. it's clear that this thread is not about anything but your relation with certain posters on this board, what about pm'ing them what you think about them directly instead of publishing all of your malcontent.
because you know...you are whining about whiners....

Why not refute the OPs comments with something more substantial rather than gibberish and a silly image? Do you feel that games are "dumbed down" these days, or not? Is this a good or a bad thing? How can we improve?

Given the various threads I've seen over the last few months, I do understand where the OP is coming from.

If you disagree, you're well within your rights to feel that way - and therefore contribute to the discussion in a constructive manner.

Agreed, gamers these days are for the most part spoon fed, hand held cry babies and used to linear stories with no freedom.

Throw them in something like ED and they really just don't know what the hell to do to have fun. Well, the thing is this - that's entirely up to you, that's the secret.

Its not anything new, its called using you're creativity and imagination.. just like reading a book if you give it a try, you just might learn something new and have fun in the process by overcoming real challenges.

because i find op's first post insulting.

when people come here and "whine like a spoiled brat" he makes it feel like they are all doing it on purpose because they have nothing better to do.
"once upon a time gamerZ did this and that and did not whine, you do" this is reeeally bad in my view.

if people come here and spend their time to point flaws in a product that cost 20% more than average on day one, they do for a better experience overall.
if mr. oldie can't remember, i can tell him that once upon a time games shipped finished, and developers never had to ask customers to test their games.
many people here are testing the game since alpha and they are not doing it because they have nothing better to do, a little respect for those people is what i ask.
and constantly have to navigate through these futile threads that talks only about personal gripes with the community feels like a waste of internet space in my eyes.

and its really infuriating to read "the story is you!" when even the devs can't figure out what the storyline is for eff sake!

In newsletter #51 he was dead:

Elite: Dangerous 1.0 will be released on 16th December. The game’s ever unfolding story starts on the 16 December launch with players participating in a vicious power struggle between the potential heirs to the recently-deceased Emperor, as the Federation and Alliance – the Empire’s rival galactic superpowers – attempt to manipulate the succession battle for their own advantage. Like every story in Elite: Dangerous’ shared galaxy, players will influence the outcome.

Then in #52 he was just sick:

Arguably the most powerful person in the galaxy, Emperor Hengist Duval, is sick.

aand of course negative rep for this post. what a sick community this is

I'll close with a tip: (spoiler alert if you want to learn how not to overshoot when trying to exit supercruise on your own, haha)
After a few tries I've discovered that going full throttle when in supercruise until the moment the 'ETA' indicator reaches 7 seconds and then slowing down and maintaining 7 seconds without going below 7 works best and you will never overshoot your target again, you can bring it down to 6 or 5 but you start risking an overshoot. It was fun to learn this my way. But if Frontier absolutely have to make any changes to this then maybe they could add an option (not in by default) that turns the timer green or red when you're at the correct speed or going too fast.

When you are going to meet the planet it's orbiting it slows you down considerably so i push my luck with coming faster. It's another part of the game that i love, i can do it easy at 9/8/7 or push it to 6/5 and push my luck as much as possible.

This is all part of the game being fun AND engaging, people who want autopilot and to be told exactly where to trade what are actually removing a fun part of the game that can seem dramatic and alienating at first for lack of a better experience before. We should see to it that we try not to hold back the game on account of making the game tedious or very hard for no reasons but focus on keeping it engaging and rewarding.

Generalization much?? I'm 40, but unlike you OP, I embrace evolution and change, even if I dont like it/understand it, your not special, some of your elder in their time thought the same way..."the old ways where better", but you know what? evolution and change is what brought us out of the caves to where we are today, it IS necessary but not everybody will understand or allow it to happen.

i will give the OP a +1 on this one, it reflects my feelings about this game and the direction it has taken (and i hope will keep) i wrote a post early this morning during the first upgrade since release that goes into details as to the why i feel this way (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=78030 if your interested)

otherwise i can think of one sentence that should heed as a warning "Remember SWG†"

Edit:
reading the old v/s young controversy in here reminded me of this video. its related to WoT but funny nonetheless

Yeah but there were many gems amongst then. Back them there was the divide too - the games with imagination and asking of your input, and those with simple cash-in motives . Elite was the high water-mark of the imagination.

This thread predominantly reads as a generational stand-over.
Yes yes, back in your day ... insert story about what you had to do and quantify why you found it so much more fulfilling /yawn

Well, times have changed. Also, the entire concept of calling out people who sit in front of a computer for entertainment as being spoilt is ridiculous.

Think about the actual mechanics of that statement. Think. My point exactly.

I still remember text based adventure games...

>Go west.
-You enter a room with a yellow striped candle
>Get Candle
-There is no candle
>Get yellow candle
-There is no yellow candle
>Get yellow striped candle
-You are too far from the yellow striped candle to get it.
>Go to yellow striped candle
-You are next to the yellow striped candle
>Get yellow striped candle
-You can't get the yellow striped candle right now.
>QERNGQ#OI$GNQEIRBNVQIRNVQIRGQ!!!

Personally, I thinkt he game is currently "incomplete", in that, it's a foundation. We all know that, there is more to come, so treat this is the time to get the hang of everything, as the background stories of the galaxy develop (with our involvement and influence), the story, too, will develop.

Z...

There are a whole load of slow impenetrable games available these days. More than ever probably.

Surely the golden age of twitchy, instant-gratification was the late 70s/early 80s arcade days?

Kids today with their longer attention spans and ability to concentrate!

this!

i remember the spectrum days, and aside from a scant few games like elite etc, thats all we got was crap twitch stuff.

press UP to watch your character climb a building with little to no interaction from you.

What? you mean you actually want people to think before using their fingers? You want them to actually have micro-muscular control?
You want them to not expect their avatars to do everything automatically? To not know that they can't make a particular jump and automatically stop moving forward, guaranteeing that they won't take a disastrous fall?

Gone are the days of the original Prince of Persia...

Welcome to the numbing experience of modern games.
Taken by the hand as if one were a lemming on the end of a string.

Thankfully ED retains that which made gaming challenging during the '80s

The problem is that you're associating the direction games have taken with evolution.

Using that logic, I could say that all airplanes are bad because stealth bombers are used to kill people.

Evolution = great, fantastic, natural, necessary, purposeful, useful, inescapable improvement

Games = haven't necessarily evolved.

There are plenty of smart, deep games out there which require you to actually think, stratagise, come up with tactics, manage logistics, solve problems and so on. Games of the 80s and early 90s were largely pretty shallow, relied on twitch skills and vast amounts of patience. The entire premise of the op is false. Gamers have not really changed so much though, excepting that kids today are in general far better than old people are picking apart complex game systems quickly.

Terrible, unforgiving designs, a lack of save points and having to fit four of your mates on one keyboard?

(no that wasn't entirely serious before all the neg reppers jump on it)

This forum is a terrible parody of itself...

'Anyone that disagrees with me and or finds problems with this game as it is = self entitled whiny brat with no patience and a desire to press A to win'.

This sort of black and white world view of everything is a cancer upon society; and its cancerous ignorance is reflected in this small microcosm of society.
