PLEASE eliminate white noise/static when engines are running! :(

Are you using a Asus Phoebus solo card by any chance? They have a problem with the mic and "interference" / Static generally.

When I was playing before launch I never had this issue. Only since launch have I experienced this problem. I have not changed anything to my computer set up since then, not even installed anything new apart from some games and a benchmarking program.

Also been having sound problems since launch, distortion/static when guns are firing. No probs in any other games or applications, checked all the settings and they're fine. No idea what the deal is and waiting on a response to a ticket. Soooo, not just you ;)

Also wish people didn't always do the 'I have no problem, so there is no problem' thing.

Thanks for telling me of your problem, agreed on the "I have no problem, so it's you" thing, you'd think PC gamers would be wiser to saying such things by now...

To everyone interested: As I mentioned before I've tested this with different headphones, in different sound setups (stereo, 5.1, 7.1) and on different pc's with and without my sound card installed. No other game is giving me such static noise issues, only Elite. Just from these very simple factors I've outlined, all logic would indicate that it's not "just me" or that my "things are about to fry" (lol rly?)...

Have you looked in the audio options to make sure you havent got headphones selected or something

I don't see any choice in the audio options for headphones or anything else. Would you mind clarifying what you mean?

Perhaps it's the thrusters? I have my lateral/vertical thrusters mapped to the mini-stick on my CH Throttle. Until I put in a little deadband to ensure thusters were being kept off, my thrusters would fire ever so slightly that even when main engines were at zero, I would still be moving and kept hearing the hissing of the thrusters.

@Op can you go into detail about you setup. And what you swapped?

Is it USB, optical or just AUX.

Utilize a DAC or some form of interface other an a audio card?

What are your headphones. Do they have a removable audio cable? It may be loose or not all the way pushed in.

Other than the game, what similarities do the other pcs have with your main one. Obviously its reproducible so this mindset may help.

Its just below dynamic range - optimised for.

The ops right. I have it too and I run a high end headphone setup(Decware CSP3, HD800, and Teac 501 dac). the static is definitely there.

My Setup:

Nvidia gtx 780ti
i7 4820k 4.0 ghz
500 gb ssd
asrock x79 extreme9 mobo
16gb ram
soundblaster z audio card

as for my audio options, as I mentioned, I have tested the issue with and without the sound card, disabling all other sound devices in device manager, used high quality bose headphones plugged into the sound card, a Plantronics Gamecom780 plugged into the USB (onboard audio) and a Logitech g930 again plugged into USB. I have also tested these audio options on a gaming laptop that I have with the same results, although that computer is different obviously.

Thank you for chiming in and letting me know I'm not the only one...I'm a bit of an audiophile, I even play instruments for years now, so combined with my love of high end gaming this issue is driving me insane while others might not even notice...ironic though with your username :p

Well take comfort in knowing it's not your gear. It's definitely in game.

Yep OP, I get it too. With the onboard card and both my AKAI EIE Pro and Roland UA-55 Quad-Capture audio interfaces, both with ground lift on and off to eliminate static build up or earth issues. And no I didn't have 48v phantom power on.

You guys might wanna check if the windows sound output is set all the way up, if you're controlling your headphones volume on another amp outside your PC it might very well be that you're amplifying an almost silent signal if the windows sound output is too low, hence the noise.

Never experienced noise in elite.

Definitely not this for me. The fact that it only started happening after the 2.7/1.0 patch and I have no issues in any other game or application is what has me stumped.

I seem to vaguely remember a thread in beta/gamma about certain codec configurations in windows causing latency in the audio data streams which then causes static and/or audio artifacts. IIRC one of the suggested fixes was to use the CCCP codec installer to disable all of the windows default codecs and install a fresh set.

Dear Devs,

I have a nice audio setup, with 7.1 surround, so I can really hear all the effects. It's great. However, I cannot stand to even fly in a straight line because moving forward (ie: after reaching the speed I set throttle at) I hear a constant staticy / white noise background disturbance. I've tested this with 3 different headsets on 2 different computers in Stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound, and it never goes away. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE eliminate this unnecessary background noise that sounds like something is wrong with your audio devices or at least give us the option to disable it, as you have so kindly done with so many sound effects/music already.

Thank you for the wonderful game, just please PLEASE give me a bit of your time in fixing this because as it is now I can't play the game. I'm sorry if that sounds melodramatic, it's just the truth.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Regards,

Luxangel7

Couldn't be bothered checking all the pages if this was asked, but is your mic on? Maybe you're picking up noises from outside the game and put through speakers. just a guess is all.

Understandable, no worries, and no it's not on. On one of my headphones (Bose) there isn't even any mic to turn on, and on the other sets I can easily mute it. But thank you for trying to help, I appreciate it :)

Yeah exactly, that's why I'm stumped as well...

All static is, is latency and or interference. Interference in todays world is mostly eliminated due to digital formats and insulated components as the norm.

I once had a horrible issue with audio crackling on everything that surfaced while playing Elite. I went so far as to install a midi software so i could achieve a higher buffer. But this meant only having one source at a time and i uninstalled it after figuring that out. It did however stop the static when listening to music.

In the end it fixed it itself. I did however uninstall Realtek Audio drivers then use CCleaner for good measure but i reset my pc and everything was fine afterwards.

If it wouldnt have fixed itself i was prepared to redo the audio codec like doeone mentioned before.

Nope. It's in game. I have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours in computer audiophile land and tell you it ain't the equipment. It's in the game...

Well hey, guess what, so have I. I don't hear any static.. You guy's should log a ticket, this issue definitely does not affect all systems

Given the meticulous rendering of audio in this game, I seriously doubt that this issue is with the audio files or game itself. You may not like to hear "I don't have the problem so it doesn't exist" but it's most likely true in this case. Unless you've tested this on a clean windows machine with no additional audio software, codecs, drivers for audio gear etc. you can't blame it on the game when hardly anyone has the issue. I'm guessing since you stress audio quality so much that you've got something (uber audio enhancers, audio interface drivers etc.) installed on both machines you tested on that is causing the problem.
