That Fer de lance, though!

Im surprised FD seem to be choosing not to take advantage of the strength of the original design shapes of the fer de lance from the earlier game. Why not work the design detail and logical cleverness within the parameters of the original hull? It had clear, obvious design shapes and lines, as demonstrated by Bitstorm's quick photoshop picture. Even though it was a rough and ready by his own admission, most people immediately identified it as a FDL, or at least preferred it.

My thoughts of the FDL are exactly the same as the adder. I like it and it'd be a great addition to the ship list but its NOT a FDL IMO. I love the sidey, viper, cobra, eagle, Conda, python and asp (the asp is a bit fugly tho IMO) but they are all detailed ships which generally look fabulous whilst still being 100% elite.

Of course new ships are great after all many years have past since 1st enc but IMO if the ships are going to keep the names then they should keep true to the design IMO.

My only hope is one day we get to see adder mk I and FDL mk l in the game. If they are not flyable and share essentially the same specs as the newer ships maybe there is a chance?

Finally a consept of the Fer-De-Lance. Its beautiful. Looks agressive, fast and agile. I wonder how many millions it will cost :) Maybe an option between the cobra and the Asp. I hope i can afford it one day :)

as i just said i don't like it..

..and more it remind me a ''fer de iron''

Thing that I don't get is this: when I saw the ships in the original game, I imagined them to be pretty much that shape, and not much more complicated. I didn't think "oh, that's a rough approximation of the shape of the ship, it must be more complicated", I thought "that's the shape of the ship, there might be colours and surface details and a few other bits, but that's what it looks like." And that's coming out of the long tradition of book covers, the Terran Trade Authority and all that, where spaceships tend to be flat geometric planes.

On a related note: one of the coolest ships in science fiction (bad science fiction, but hey), the Lady Mac, is a plain sphere. The Heart of Gold is a running shoe. Culture GSVs are big ellipsoids with a cuboid inside. Heighliners are cylinders. Liberator is a microphone with bits stuck on it. You don't need to be more complicated than the original Elite ship shapes to have a cool starship. :(

Probably won't buy it, I don't like ships with noses taking the field of view. (ditched my anaconda in beta in 15 minuts because of this)

Forgive my ignorance but how do we know this is the Fer-De-Lance? I have just seen this for the first time.

To be honest this ship looks more like a mamba to me.

Concept on my desktop background now. I just wonder where the hard points would fit and how many it would have? 5 maybe or 4? I hope its not to expensive, but it would definetivly be my ship of choice when it comes into the game. Maybe I have to begin trading to get the cash :p

oooooooooo, thats very nice - guessing it would sit between Cobra - Asp?

Agreed, I think it'll be the next fighter weight class above the Viper. If I recall correctly from Elite the Fer-de-lance was the Bounty hunters ship of choice, a luxury hunter-killer. I don't think that size wise it was much larger than the Cobra in the original (and had much less cargo space), then again I didn't think the Asp was much larger than the Cobra then either.

It'd certainly be nice to have a dedicated fighter in that kind of credit bracket.

The design isn't bad, but FD appear to have an obsession with ships with fins and widgets currently, I was hoping for something that looks a little more poniardy - like the original. It's best view is from the back IMO.

i like the design, but those wings should be a little more aggressive, they look like the adder

but overall i'm happy with it
