Immersion breaking NPC names

NPC that borrow (not nod, let's face it) from popular culture. Immersion breaking or not?

  • No. I love running into all these characters and it doesn't impinge upon my roleplaying whatsoever (

  • Yes. How can I place myself in the future if I keep running into pre-millennial pop icons. Also, Bra

It doesn't bother me at all. People get named after famous people all the time, not to mention fictional characters, and "alternative" names. Why in the world would future parents be any better at naming their children?

All the time? Really? First and last name? All the time? I must be living in Greenland.

And ofc, this isn't a wholly serious poll.

I find it tacky, and it does bring me out of rp, but I'm not asking that they pull these names - as someone pointed out they were probably added by backers as was their prerogative - but it's the prevalence of these names I find irksome. Once in a while, sure, it might bring a wry smile to my face, but I don't want to see an Arthur Dent every time I log in.

Please add another option to the poll "I don't give a ".

Liar. You cared enough to post :p

I went to school with a Marilyn Monroe, and I don't want to think how many baby boys born in the 80s here in the States, whose family name was Cameron, were cursed with the first name Kirk.

I just wish they wouldnt allow numerals like swagmaster1100107 ingame and at least force the use of roman numerals (or a unique name in general).... So its at least "Swagmaster the IV". It really bothers me.

I laughed last night when I saw "Murgatroyd" triggering a cartoon flashback from childhood. I had to google it because I couldn't remember exactly which cartoon it was (Yogi Bear / Snagglepus), but then I learned that is actually real last name too!

Sooo... funny and educational!

Many names are just silly(who am i to even say that..lol) - but apparently players could name npc´s early on - some are good... some are bad :)

Like Flash Gorgon...

I met him too. Made me giggle.

Yes, some are just plain silly, but I love the variety of names. It adds some colour to the game

Really? Some parents should have their licence revoked.

My niece is at school with more than one Arwen.

The latest fashion is girls called Khaleesi, named by fans of Game of Thrones who aren't quite big enough fans to know that's her title, not her name.

I've never met a Leia. Parents in my day clearly had more sense.

I don't think anyone's crying foul over the use of first names. I went to school with an Arwen, but then again I'm welsh, so a lot of us did. Leia too (a variant of Leah), is fairly common biblical name.

Obviously, there's degrees. For example, seeing a Walt is pretty innocuous, even a Walt The Cook, or a Mickey Walt. They have a subtlety about them; they're a nod to popular figures without waving it in your face. But shooting down Walt Disney, I would suggest, is a little jarring for those trying to place themselves in the universe. (Sorry McDosy, this isn't really aimed at you - I just wanted to clarify a point.) Put in another way, there's a big difference between naming your drink cola and Coca Cola.

I got interdicted by Jayne Cobb

The man they call Jayne?
