Frontier:Are fights during civil wars supposed to effect influence or change the outcome of the war?

All we know is that civil war is a fight between factions for control of a station in the system. We don't know what fighting in a conflict zone does (or what its suppose to do). Here we seem to have no direct influence change seen but we don't know if their is suppose to be one right away or fighting just makes it more likely the station will flip .

That isn't a response to the issue raised in this thread, but a separate one. This problem is specifically about civil war war zones. And if that response is true, it still doesn't mean the outcome is not handled manually by Frontier or that warzones will have any impact.

Well, fair 'nuff, i think that post was made when they were queried about the storyline.

As i said, quite a while ago now, so i don't remember it in full. It may have contained answers for this particular topic too, that's why i tried to look for it.

If you find it, though, do let us know. It might be relevant in some war or other.

You know, people can be fighting for the other side as well (you might not have seen, they could be in another instance, playing group, or solo). It could be that in this conflict zone both sides were fairly evenly balanced.

Also, while you are blowing things up in the conflict zone, there could be people running missions for the other side, trading, or bounty hunting nav points or whatever that is also countering your efforts.

The amount of people defending this system is astonishing.

And the fact that Frontier don't even tell us how the system works (One of them said they'll never disclose it)

Lugh hasn't had a conflict zone show up. We are currently being kept in the dark by our Benevolent god. When it is time for conflict within Lugh, the most beneficial and watchful Orb of light will dispel the shadows.

We have gained some insight, which repeats what others have said. Be careful with describing 'Civil War'. At this point it appears to define a state of conflict between factions within a station.
'War' is apparently different and involves external system wide instances. (this from the dev discussions pre-release and some posts in the Dukes thread), note: in all probability, these definitions might have changed.
Changed 1/16/2015 https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=100129&p=1553584&viewfull=1#post1553584

In Lugh we can keep pressure on stations and keep the civil war state pending holding indefinitely, but have only had one station win the war and flip. We currently are under a boom state and do not seem to have any external instances within the system.

These are fun times, to some, and others find these types of actions painful, when they do not work properly. To those fighting for a cause do not lose patience, the game is still going through growing pains and still has bugs and broken mechanics. You are quite literally fixing them with your play time and efforts.

To those that feel there is no game and that it all is RNG, etc. I ask you to prove it and join a fight, follow the rules of engagement, and report your findings with everyone else's or stop telling those that ARE doing the impossible that it can't be done.

Finally, for all watching and involved in these player actions, maintain your composure on the forums. Point out possible bugs, post links to photos that show questionable outcomes, and keep the tone of your posts polite. It is frustrating, it is painful, and above all, it does question your own 'sanity' in doing these things, however, the devs have worked quite quickly to fix many of the bugs and polish the game...and they are continuing to do so.

They should take a page out of the City of Heroes playbook. One of the Cryptic guys (gecko) spent a ton of time in the forums confirming and denying theories, as well as sharing 'special sauce' when necessary. This led to a bunch of gaming nerds with stats backgrounds influencing the development of the game for the better, and led to exposure of broken mechanics before they manifested in huge problems in-game.

You wanted us as beta testers, and clearly that testing need has extended past 'release'. Maybe instead of being secretive and going for security through obscurity, it's time to cooperate with your player base.

But they are. In fairness I would be guilty of calling FD to fix problems in the game but since after the Christmas break they have been doing nothing else. Infact, I am actually astounded at just how much effort they are going to to get it right. I would not be quick to have a go and condemn them so quickly. This game is a huge undertaking and is always going to be a work in progress. Even when the day comes when they put down their tools for the last time people will complain that this game was never finished. That is because its scope is huge and problems are going to arise as they go. They are fighting an angry mob of players who on one side want them to fix and perfect what they have and another on the other side who want new material.

I think Roybe is right. We need to cut them a break and let them get on with it. By all means point out things that are wrong. This game needs to be improved in so many ways but they ARE actually doing it. We don't live in a perfect world and I personally think they are doing their best.

Yea devs works like hell...
...but they just can't type about their progress on the forum... (except M. Brooks few days ago, some overall info). Right.
Why they do not comunicate with their own costumers, about sandbox game, which was made from kickstarter money?
Why we can't get any proper informations about this unfinished product, which i love btw.
I feel like for Christmas I got best gift i could imagine, but i just can't consume it in the way i want to.
It was great for first 2 weeks, when i was discovering every aspect of the game, but now when i want to be a real part of this Universe, I just cant.
Developers must understand that good game is the game when players are main actors, not NPCs.

Good working background simulator is the key to achive that. Then, they can add rest of things like terraformning, self-upgrading stations, landing on planets and making unhabited systems living organizms.
And many, many other great stuff. Even in form of addons we will need to pay for. I dont ask for that now.

The Elite Galaxy is really the same game in every corner of space. (just different names of factions, so guys please dont get overwhelmed by the size of it)
Dynamic events mechanizm (implemented in other MMO games these days), here in form of factions influence, which is based just on few things (missions, trading, exploration and combat), should be easy to make in XXI century game industry buisness.
And afcorse it must be balanced for player's, because while playing this game instead of frustration, we need to feel joy and that we can really participate in galaxy life. At the end we are the one playing this game.
If devs wants to contiune their storyline, like they do now in Galnet news - no problem, but it must be adapted to our actions. (btw wonder for how long they will do it. I though news was created by some mechanizm aswell) ;)
If i want to support faction, because i like the name of it, or i like goverment it represents, I must be able to do it in practice not just in theory.
If i will spend 12h a day for 10 days doing stuff for them i want to see the real results. And i want to see progress of my work in real-time, not once per day. (I'm connected to the game servers all the time, right?)
I dont ask for much....

...or maybe we just didn't understand the devs concept of their Elite Dangerous Galaxy. Maybe the missions that shows us +1% influence change, really makes like 0.00001% influence. (feels like)
The Galaxy will be nice and safe forever, controled by NPC's (another damn Matrix), but at the end of the day, it will become very boring for players in the long run...and empty.
Hope not.

I just don't know if anything is actually working correctly at this point, or if there even is an actual background sim going on, or if anything we do actually matters. We can, through trading and missions, change influence values - but they don't seem to mean anything. We can trigger states like seeking luxuries and civil war, and those spawn special locations, but those locations themselves, nor the states, seem to have no further impact at all.

It's just demoralizing at this point. I wish Frontier would confirm that these things were broken just so I could believe they might get fixed, but I'm beginning to believe this is the way it's intended to be.

Yeah, I'm getting pretty frustrated with Frontier's devotion to keeping this a black box.

If it actually worked, being a black box wouldn't be the worst thing. But it is obviously broken. Either come explain the mechanics to us if it isn't broken (and, thus, the rationale for conflict zones having no influence on Civil Wars), or acknowledge that it is broken and tell us how (and perhaps when) you plan on fixing it.

Ain't like I'm paying monthly, so I can always come back and play when it's fixed. (I am however paying for ship skins for ships I like, as are many others, so it would be in Frontier's interest not to frustrate those of us who are really trying to explore the mechanics of the game)

I agree, my group has been trying to influence a system and we've only been able to trigger system states, nothing else really seems to have an influence. Generating unrest and even civil war seems to work, but other things don't seem to have any effect. Is there even a background simulation or is that some ? Can we get some dev input on this please? I think GlyphGryph has shown sufficient evidence to warrant some developer time on this issue.

The simple fact is, there really is no multiplayer component in any significant way. You can fight others, yes, but without factions and the state of the universe as it is right now, there's nothing to do. There's nothing you can do to enemies except harass them until they either put you on ignore or go into Solo. I'm getting a bit fed up with it to be perfectly frank. How does Frontier expect to keep a playerbase when the players have no influence and have no means to really fight a war (other than interdiction harassment essentially)?

Let's be honest, war is what keeps a game like this interesting.

It doesn't even have to be war. If the only way to flip a system is through trading and courier missions, honestly that would be fine (combat oriented players could contribute through blockades and interdictions instead of pitched battles).

It would just be nice to be able to get some faint hint from the developers as to whether things like this, whose effects (or lack thereof) seem rather counter-intuitive, are in fact broken or not.

Any insight on how you won the civil war to get the station to flip? Running combat missions, conflict zones, or just continued to do normal missions to work on influence? Before, you wouldn't even get conflict zones if the civil war didn't include the controlling faction. So, unless it was an oversight, conflict zones clearly weren't required to win civil wars.

This is an interesting thread, it's covering a lot of what I have been thinking about ED recently.

That living breathing universe I was so looking forward to is beginning to look like It might not be what the Devs had in mind.

A man may be on life support, living, breathing, but it doesn't mean he has any life in him.

Like this background simulation.

At best it the whole factions/influence/war thing is only partially implemented. Would be nice to get some sort of official word though.

Honestly? It seems as if the insistence on keeping the mechanics a 'black box' is more a smokescreen over the fact that it just doesn't work. There is no way for us, the players, to know whether something is working or not. It gives the impression that the developers don't even know.

Honestly, if you want it to remain subtly mysterious, give us clues. Use the fact that this is a mandatory-online game to pull up statistics on kills etc in conflict zones, and see how much influence it generates. And if there are no logs, then why have it online in the first place?
