Celebration at Lincoln Station - February 12, 3301

Okay Elite: Dangerous community! Looks like this is going to happen!.
Organizing a gathering of Commanders outside Abraham Lincoln (Sol, Earth orbit).
February 12th is Lincoln's birthday which makes it a great time for a gathering at Abraham Lincoln starport. The times that make most sense to me are 01:00 game-time on February 12th (that will be 7PM Central Time in the USA on the 11th of February) and again at 18:00 game time on the 12th to accommodate players in Europe. Also adding a middle time around 14:00. We can change these times or add more based on community feedback.
I'm thinking we can meet outside the station and maybe flash our headlights for something like 30 seconds to show support for ending the Slave trade in the galaxy, something that would make Lincoln proud. Maybe someone can recite the Emancipation Proclamation or the Gettysburg Address or something and folks can post links to video/screenshots from the event on the forum.

I propose most of us arrive in Sidewinders... in case some pro-slavery terrorists attempt to crash the event it will mean less chance of major loss.
We also need CMDRs willing to risk that loss to provide security for the event!

EDIT: Adding a video about the first meeting. Looks like things were pretty quiet. Hopefully we'll have more interaction in the next two meetings:

EDIT: Video from the second meeting. CMDR Virgil Kyle honored us by reading Lincoln's Gettysburg Address:

CMDR Twinley started a thread with some event screenshots:

And... found another video while browsing YouTube:

No Imperial clippers allowed, and there would need to be a screen of fighters to stop the imperials interfering!

Erm slavery was abolished in UK in 1833. USA abolished in circa 1860something. Maybe we should have a William Wilberforce day. Sorry but I dont hold Lincoln in any real esteem as he was not my President despite his achievements. I suspect others may feel the same. Please dont take this the wrong way. The only 'leader' who has my respect is the current Dalai Lama. All the others, churchill and other greats included, were all self serving to some or all extent. Its the little people who do things that have my respect but its always the politicians that seem to get the kudos. I'd sooner celebrate the common man/woman.

Hey, if there is a Wilberforce station, then I'm all for meeting there on his birthday too. As for the current Dalai Lama... he seems pretty self-serving too.

Wow man if you knew anything about Lincoln then you'd know that he was as far from the current idea of a politician as you can get. Self loathing and permanently depressed the only thing he cared about was his country and his duty to it. You won't see many books by Lincoln other than memoirs during his hardest times but there are plenty from the DL so not sure what to say about your perspective here other than it is frankly unaware of the facts. Also back then the US president was basically a common man who anyone could request an audience with and discuss politics simply by walking up the white house lawn. Try that today and see what happens.

I have no doubt he was a great man. But he was a great man amongst many great men who went unrecorded. Its just he was not my president and he never abolished slavery worldwide or galaxy wide. Indeed you were 30yrs behind the groove. I dont want to go off thread so i will leave it at that.

Agreed. I'd hate to get into a "my abolitionist is better than your abolitionist" debate. Tragically and despite the work of Wilberforce and Lincoln human trafficking still exist in the 21st century. I find it sad commentary that the Elite: Dangerous universe pessimistically projects this evil side of humanity into 3301. But hey, if we players really can affect change in the game universe, maybe enough of us can change that.

I'm from the UK too and I hold Lincoln in high regard for the advancements he made in the US in abolishing slavery and moving forward black civil rights. So what if the US was thirty years behind the UK? Anyone who positively affects the human race should be held in high regards, irrespective of where they came from.

Unregulated slavery is a taint upon mankind. It is good to see some independent pilots, misguided as they may be in their choice of allegiance, recognize that the Federation is suffering from lack of regulations regarding slaves. If only your leaders had half a brain, they would understand that the Imperial way is truly superior.

Good point, well made.
