Computer System requirements

Thanks for the response Bikky

I never used a stock heatsink - I use a Noctua NH-U12P. Really good and never had a problem with it. So I'm probably good to go as far as a bit of OCing goes.
But just as a matter of reference I'd like to know what GPU would bottleneck my CPU at stock speeds.

Thanks

no idea on that. I only found out my old gt4800 was bottlenecking my old AMD 3400 2.8ghz (oc'd to 3.2ghz) when I upgraded the mobo/cpu/hdd/ram, and my counter strike FPS went from 50ish to 100ish.

However my gfx card was also overclocked, about 12% increase on gpu and 8% on RAMDAC.

Overclocking is so easy now because it's expected, so manufacturers supply software to just click and go. Mine actually autotuned to 4.2 on the cpu, so I could risk instability and take it to probably 4.4. but no point, I'm getting 300fps in counter strike source, and that's the max ingame FPS i've got set, I keep meaning to change that cvar but only remember after i've started the game. oh and i'm currently on a 6800gtx nvidia overclocked. I'm looking at the 670/680/690 for ED

Whilst we're on the subject of Graphic card performance, if a graphics card has 4 outputs for screens does that mean it should be able to drive four screens?

I have this in mind, and I've read and read but all I can find is "1 or multiple screens"

SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100352VXSR Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

I want to have four screens ... ultimately.

Whoa ... how about four projectors :D

More screens generally need more GPU grunt to work well. The multi monitor setups I see online tend to have 2,3 or 4 graphics cards linked together to combine their power. It has it's own issues such micro stuttering or the fact that you don't get exactly 2, 3 or 4 times the performance (i.e. if you got 100FPS on 1 GPU you wouldn't often get 200,300 or 400 fps if you increased the number of GPUS).

Having tried one I'd advise holding fire and waiting for the Oculus rift to be released.

I think I am good to go upgraded my PC a few months ago =

AMD FX8350 8 core CPU overclocked to 5Ghz Corsair H80i water cooling
Asus Sabertooth 990FX Mobo
Corsair vengence 16GB 1600 DDR3 Ram
Gigabyte Windforce HD7950 3GB GPU
Zalman 1KW PSU modular
Samsung 256Gb SSD + WD 1Tb HDD
Fractal Design Define R4 case
Pioneer blu-ray drive
LG 42" 1080p monitor
Win 64bit OS
Oh and an old microsoft sidewinder precision 2 joystick USB

If this baby dont run ED you can whip me though the streets of Aberdeen!
(Oh no we dont have to go that far ..... Alyesbury will do):D

I have a GTX650 which should be ok and also a 64 bit quad core CPU that should do the job.

But is 4GB ram on win7 enough ?

I cannot put more than that in my PC on looking at my ram upgrade options.

So SC states min 8GB ram, if that is the same for ED I will need to buy a new computer to play it, which I would but that ups the cost a lot...

just buy 4x2GB memory sticks. and put them in the four memory slots

I'm surprised that you have a computer that can take a GTX650 but not 4GB RAM. Which motherboard do you have? Or is it an off the shelf big name vendor? In that case which make/model?

Would using USB sticks to give extra RAM be fast enough and is it recognized by games as just extra regular RAM?

Nope. Using USB in ReadyBoost, which is what I'm thinking you refer to isn't the same as adding RAM. They don't get used as RAM, although some sites say they do, think of it as a Paging File in faster memory. That's not entirely right either, but it's a decent enough analogy.

I was surprised too. Actually it has 4GB, it is 8GB it cannot take. So I am hoping the game will run in 4GB, fingers crossed as it is still a nice computer.

I have a p6210uk by HP.

Might be a stupid question. But is your RAM limited because you're running a 32 bit OS? Or is there a hardware reason for it? Or is it under warranty and you don't want to meddle with it?

If it's OS (and not under warranty), could you upgrade to 64bit? - you should be able to handle 8Gb+ of RAM then.

It's just HP limited it too much. It is 64 bit and I am ok with upgrading, but the info says in the 2 memory slots I have I can only put 2 GB in each which is pants.

If ED will not run ok in 4GB then Looks like I will upgrade to new PC.

@ Cody and Jason S

Thanks guys, hope the game specs. work out for you Jason. :)

On the bright-side, Mr. Braben has a reputation for squeezing the most out of hardware and getting amazing results, and it was mentioned early on that the game is aimed to try and get the most from existing tech. We can hope that means that ED will run well even on modest specs.

I have a p6210uk by HP.

I just had a quick look at the p6210uk system specs, I think that unfortunately the 300W PSU listed on HP's site is likely to be underpowered for a modern gaming graphics card.

Now, if the PSU form factor is standard then you could upgrade that, and the motherboard too (to get around the RAM limitation, if needed), though cooling might then be an issue depending on how much airflow HP gave you with that case.

I upgraded the power supply and graphics card already.

But the memory I cannot, so will keep my fingers crossed that it runs in 4GB, if it does then I will upgrade PC in a couple of years, if not, well my birthday is start of next year...

It is true that buying branded computers, often poses problems of scalability.
To free themselves from that yoke of the major manufacturers, and to regain its freedom of maneuver, the ideal is to build a PC oneself, and if you do not know, to appeal an independent assembler
