Met My First Hacker Today

Over 400 posts and I can't seem to find a comment in this thread from any devs on this subject..:S

tis a shame that some are going solo to avoid alleged hacking - kind of spoils the multiplayer aspect of this game.

I'm new to MMO games so I just researched game hacking on line........Call me naive if you like but I was shocked, What a mess.

Loads of folk were calling for increased fines for murder. I can see now why FD didn't do it.

There are some folk out there auctioning bounties. I'm not saying they are hackers but they could be......

Hack------run up a massive bounty--------auction it on line.

Completely depends on what time of day you go, what timezone you're on, what country you're from and if you even get instanced with the players. One of the guys is from Holland and plays late evenings 10pm onwards.

Of course - just curious,

Here now - when I got here there was a guy firing dumbfire missiles all over the place, but not at me - no sign of anyone atm, might leave it windowed on my other monitor whilst I work (working from home today :p) and see if anything crops up

I really hope its not going the same way as The WarZ (Infestation Survivor Stories), they refused to admit there were hackers until hours worth of footage hit Youtube with blatant hacks, they then lied about fixing these hacks and instead just banned people accounts, knowing they would just buy another account and do it again, hoping they wouldn't get caught a second time. Didn't really matter if they did though as all they needed to do was steal mummies credit card again and open yet another account.
WarZ's reason for doing it this way? they made so much more money selling multiple copies of the game to people who hacked, than they would have done fixing the problems in the first place and not allowing people to hack.
Time will tell.

People can just go to group instead. Multiplayer will always live the strongest in dedicated group play. Get together a group (or find an existing one) based on your play style would be my advice to anyone lamenting switching to solo. Building a common community will also help out the larger elite community because if you define your focus well enough, you will give a home to many commanders. And remember that commanders can have many different homes so it need not be a "catch all" group.

Hi

Yes I remember this however there is one detail you may not know about Warz, the Devs were also brought up in banning forum members who were telling people and posting videos about the hacks and trying to warn them

I hope FD arnt like this, but we will soon know as I'm planning on doing some recording this weekend (maybe before) and get some solid proof of the hacks, I'm busy the next couple of days but I'll get started as soon as I can and if the Devs ban me........well I'll cross that bridge when I come to it

The interesting thing is that the 1.1 main update apparently drops today, so i'll be very concerned if these people are still able to launch dumbfires inside the station without being "taken care of"

Here's a couple of photos of today's action (names sadly censored to protect the guilty).

First is the main offender and possibly a mate dog-fighting inside George Lucas, apparently immune to station fire.

Second is the main offender blowing up some poor soul who I failed to warn in time.

P.S. use of Comic Sans is deliberate as this guy deserves nothing less :)

N.B : Probably the same guy on the pics above.

(* I suppose it's Silent Running)

Happened to me today in Leesti - Georges Lucas.
There was a Viper using Silent Running* to get inside the Station.
He was waiting inside the station until a players come to dock then he shoot them.
I don't know what weapon he was using but they have exploded pretty fast.

Station defenses seem to attack him for a short period.
i guess with the Silent Running* he escaped the station defenses.
I clearly saw him appear and disapear from my radar inside the station.
That's probably the Silent Running* but he had his shield which was most of time full.

After he has done his kills, he flight outside and got shoot by the station defenses.

I tried to kill him but he managed to escape with Chaff Launcher and FSD.
Anyways he was back a few secondes later doing the same thing.
He killed me twice like that when i went back to dock.

Sadly my Bandicam wasn't running.
Maybe next time.

Your missing the point about the MD5 checks, you can't simply alter files and expect the server to accept them, it's too lengthy to go into, but you should read up on PBBans or Wikipedia if you're genuinely interested.

what he is saying is that while it is important that file be check for integrity, it is not enought since hacks do actually act directly in RAM to modify / freeze specific value.

unfortunately there is no way to prevent that, and even so, this can also be made within the network layer to modify value sent so what is needed is a check on the other side be it server or another client that will check whether it is ok or not regarding game mechanics.

I think they will need video (possibly multiple videos submitted by different players) as these pictures don't really prove that the person was hacking as you can't see the station firing at them, and you can't see evidence that they are absorbing more fire than should be possible even for the best equipped ship.

I'm not saying I don't believe you, just that FD probably have to a apply an "innocent till proven guilty" to these things.

Are they regularly docking to pay off the fines or just staying flying around the bay?

all this was reported from early stage, still nothing done.......

by end of Feb. i will not be able to dispute using paypal anymore, if issue not solved then i'll refund / chargeback before i can't do it anymore

Alas I don't have video capture, these photos are just for you guys really. I did see him dock once (maybe twice).

Re: someone else's comment about silent running, I don't think he's using it. He stayed on my scan pretty much the whole time I was watching. Besides, SR would turn off his shields which I'm guessing would be BAD.

Incidentally, before someone complains that I'm giving this guy too much publicity, I don't care about him, this is just about keeping the rest of the community as informed as possible about what's going on.

I'm not sure it's so much that - hacking is rife in just about all online games, it's literally a plague that nobody can really fix.. I gave up comp counterstrike because of it, in BF it drove me nuts, it goes back as far as Quakeworld... the fact that people are hacking in ED is entirely predictable, and it's entirely predictable that nobody can really do anything about it..

they could spend a year re-designing everything and it still wouldn't work, OR they could hand responsibility to the community for them to police it - but that comes with a whole heap of issues.

Permanent ban and instant account deletion for cheaters or the whole game will be played only by cheaters while the rest of us were looking for another game.

Rife, not quite true. Some games have managed to limit the damage done by the hack brigade, but it is an arms race, and one you have to invest heavily in if you intend to keep them out of your game. Trusting the client -at all- is one of the cardinal sins though, and that's going to be a problem that Frontier have to solve one way or another, I don't envy them that little mess.

Keeping people aware that there's an idiot on the loose is a good, community thing to be imo. It does seem like it'll need to be the community that solves these issues long-term. Most likely by the community moving to alternate systems. Once they get bored, they'll no doubt move on to some other game & annoy people there instead.

Arguably a worse crime than what this guy's doing!! ;)
