Referring to the newsletter "This week, we’re taking stepping outside and taking a look at our ships with the new external camera, available in March’s Wings content update."
Before anyone pings me on this, i've already looked through main poll/discussion thread and i'm not digging through 200+ threads as it should be consolidated.
I have a few questions for those who know more about this feature being implemented as it concerns balance/immersion.
1) Can you use this external view and rotate the camera during combat?
2) Will there be new keybinds to control camera?
3) Will any HUD elements be toggled or enabled during external cam or is it purely cosmetic?
If usable in combat this would prove to add to some serious balance concerns. #wtfneedsradar
I'm just afraid this is what external cam would be like
Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!
Fastest thread end evaaaaa!!!!! *Dramatic echo*
Of course, a true third-person camera would give players increased spatial awareness and advantages in combat, so we had to be sure players can't use the debug camera to cheat. The solution you’ll find in Wings offers limited control of the camera outside your ship and confers no advantage to gameplay;
"Wait, what? Why is Frontier implementing an External View?!"
-_- really?
Because it's a feature lots of player wants?
What advantage?? Don't we have a all seeing radar?I`m a flight simmer and every time I pop to outside view I loose my advantage.
Have you even read the newsletter?
It's purely cosmetic, no HUD elements will be shown. You can't fly the ship and control the external view at the same time...the ship will basically keep on doing what it was doing before you entered the mode. There will apparently also be a popup when going into the mode so you can't really flip in on and off again while in combat.
It's basically the debug camera they've used internally when taking screenshots for PR purposes.
Debug Camera =/= External Camera? I wasn't assuming it was the same...

this isn't "every simulator"![]()
Yes really, 3rd person in any game like this is really lame. Use it while docked, thats fine, preview your ship and swoon over it while outfitting. Im glad to know at least you can't rotate in combat....

Yes, it is worse. It's shaping up to be awesome yet, and for that it needs third person.
For a game that gives us the actual galaxy to explore and cool paint for our rides, taking good screenies is an important addition. And it's not just for looking at ships, it's for not needing to care about how big the canopy panes are on a ship you want to use for deep-space exploration photography.
