Curry, the answer is always curry

For real, I'd be happy with a no clip camera that instantly pans around but I think my idea above would be a great middle ground to keep everyone happy perhaps

Yes, I am going to take a selfie of myself with your tattered sidewinder remains drifting away into the blackness of space one day

HHAHAHA you ? first you would have to be smart enough to find the open play
second you are way to late to find me in an sidewinder
but pls give me your cmdr name so i can have funn ganking you ...wouldnt even care lossing my ship for killing you on docking in the middle of an station :)
more than enough money for that to gank ya till ya delete the game

Just had a thought... on the ED store's front page there's an animation which includes an external view of a ship lifting off then going onto SC/Hyperspace. So... given we're all gonna have the camera soon, anyone got any idea what'll happen if you activate the cam while you're counting down to hyperspace? Will it come with you, or get left behind? Or will you simply not be able to enable it while the count down's on (which would be a shame for the movie makers).

EVA was always planned as being a thing, but first FD need to find a way of ungluing the pilot from his seat.

The pilot'll need a head too, one imagines.

And you can stand up and look 360 degrees around your ship! Takitul Advantuge I say!

The tactical advantage is somewhat diminished by the existential crisis caused by looking back at your body as your head goes NYOOM round the cabin

The VR thing is a great point, as I get a massive advantage as it is right bow in combat with a Rift on, more so than any external camera would ever give me anyway

Even my el-cheapo head tracker confers a combat advantage over being stuck on a forward view (or using clunky hat switches).

A rift would blow your mind my friend, you see everything all the time, good fun

Err... have a look at any of the other polls out there that say the same thing, or start a new one if you like. The results have been pretty consistent.

I would imagine the camera will revert back as soon as the countdown begins. Which would be sad but hey, just have to get a friend along to get around another limitation...unless the camera is locked on your ship in which case...ugh.

Heads are overrated so.

I'm struggling, I don't know what side of this argument you are on, or even know which side of the argument you think I am on.

3. oh my god am i a hovering head
Grab your cheeks and flap them around with a fan blowing cold air at your face to complete the effect :D

Yah my brother (who put me onto ED in the first place) bought himself a Rift. He loves it but he recommends waiting for the hi-res retail version. I'm also yet to see a good solution for the inherent problems with using a head mounted VR, and having a comms system that relies strongly on typed chat.

Both points I would agree with.
I have the higher res Gear VR as well and resolution makes all the difference for sure.

I also have a Leap Motion and if FD could give support for that you could potentially use the in cockpit keyboard to type on which would rock, although in reality it may be unpractical

Stay classy, pilot.

Or, you know, begin to be classy, so you can then stay classy.

OR burns my eyes lol. Ive used it for about 20 minutes and its sat in its box since. Was going to flog in on Ebay for Christmas but never got around to it. Cant get over the purity of visuals, and full environmental awareness of head tracking, even though its less immersive.

Yah I'm pretty happy with mine... three screens gives me peripheral vision, and head tracking means I can follow targets and check out the cool planet I'm flying past, all in high res. I'll give VR a go if I get the chance, but I've no driving need to update so far. I was tempted to have a go at that Google cardboard thing, but I have a feeling the experience would be so poor as to (unfairly) put me off trying VR altogether.

The higher res makes all the difference, my Gear VR is 1440p and it's nicer.
Also, 90 FPS will be a big leap as well. It's early days yet and everyone's complaints about VR right now are valid, the exciting thing is how far it's come in the past year.

That's a load of nonsense. As if the marketing department is saving money by an external view cam being enabled, what a crock. Make the case for your external cam on gameplay, game experience or whatever, but saying it's saving money for the studio, don't make me laugh.

Just take a look at 1C/777 Studios & Rise of Flight and the IL-2 series. Look them up on Youtube some time. Look into their respective forums some time, too. Almost all official trailers for RoF were made by community members, enabled by the broad toolset for views and flight recording. It's blatantly easy to see that disseminating the same amount of coverage on Youtube and similar sites, that the community provided for, would've cost 1C/777 a truckload of money.

Will you kindly stop spamming the forum with ill-informed drivel, now?

I'm active in the IL2 community and I'm familiar with the community trailers and videos, especially Chuck Owl's stuff.

Those videos are made using the replay and recording features built into the engine.

External views are still disabled on the ATAG servers, the community prefers it that way.

You are arguing in favour of having an external camera using examples of trailers that are built using a track replay system, and saying it'll save the studio money.

We don't have a replay system, we won't be able to control the ship when the debug camera is active, so I don't know where you are getting the idea of making game trailers from.

That's why this argument comes across to me as complete drivel.

On topic; While I feel for those who have opposed the external view throughout this thread I am thrilled to see it come to fruition... For me it will add immersion many fold, not take it away...

And to paraphrase Commander Spock...

Don't grieve Commander, "It's Logical... The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one"

Salute...

Frontier have consistently put out excellent promo videos, attend trade shows, have a ton of livestreamers, a community podcast that's put out over 50 shows, LaveCon and other meet ups, hundreds of YouTube channels showing gameplay, the superb Isinona gameplay videos... I don't remember 1c having any of that, in fact IL2 CLOD was rescued by the community, it was unplayable at launch and for a long time afterward.

Is there really a need for ED fans to make external view trailers with bland awful over the top Holywood orchestral muzak?

Its been planned for ages, it was to be done in a way that didn't break immersion and had a physical component like a drone or remote camera.

It's placeholder...
