What can I read that will help me choose a name apt for the game's current fictions?
I haven't yet found descriptions of Elite: Dangerous's setting. I have never played an Elite game before and am having trouble understanding the background of E: D.
I hope I'm not missing something obvious. If I am I apologize for wasting your time.

Welcome to the forums, Punchin' Emett.
Your in game name can come from anywhere. I'd reckon most people here are avid science fiction and just plain science fans and many will have chosen names from these backgrounds. Of course its encouraged to be as original as you can with your name. Anything you choose will no doubt contribute directly to the game lore in time.
If you want to read up and be inspired by game fiction and lore, I'd encourage you to read up on all the fiction diaries (found in the Updates section of the forum, which happens to be this one you're in now). In fact all the posts in this section will be a good read to build background information to the game in general, technical, progress, art and fiction and anything in between are all covered.

Also there is a forum dedicated to fiction discussions - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=45. Asking your question here will probably have people providing you with a ton more resources than I can dredge up.
And lastly, I would encourage you to hang out more in the fiction forum or the general forum (http://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=30). The Updates forum tend to be less frequented (until Frontier post a new Newsletter or something) so you might not get answered straight away if people arent paying attention.

Personally would have been pretty annoyed if Commander Vigor was taken, but I guess I could always have stuck a 'One' on the beginning...
Ah, well. I got it and that's that. Would have been nice to name a station or planet, but their names would probably be equally unimaginative!
My friend Tom, who starred on Lave Radio once or twice as the one who destroys the vending machines, has yet to back the game, and therefore he hasn't picked his commander name yet. He's probably going to go for Commander Starkiller. Does anyone know if it's been taken yet? (Please say it has! I want to see what kind of replacement his imagination can conjure up!)

My name was rejected since it includes military rank in it
I've been known as CaptainSodom since mid-Nineties, and I feel proscribing the use of ranks in names doesn't make sense
Even if the game uses military ranks, who cares if someone is "Captain CaptainSodom," except for hardcore RPers? Even if you do, the game is bound to be full of "Captain PewPew"s and "Commander P00pyP4nts"es which break immersion way more, so my name is the least of their worries.

But, but, I can't possibly find another name which is as descriptiv... uhh classy... I mean unique as CaptainSodom.
There are no appeals, and no discussions on why anything was rejected. If they did allow appeals and discussions they'd spend a lot of time on that alone. As long as you follow the naming guide lines / rules, you'll be fine.
