How do I start a second commander?

I wont fully be able to play the game with my friend and play when he is not online until there is more than one cmdr per account. Ofcourse i could buy another game and that's probably the aim of not having more than one cmdr right now but ill wait to have all my eggs in the same basket. It's not like you share ressources/credit/ships between your cmdr.

SWG i think had the one alt rule to start with, i remember how long i had to think what race i wanted to play, that was a tough desision back there, specially since i got certified Alteitis

Having one commander doesn't encourage players to take risks. They talk of including an ironman mode, but that won't mean much if they don't allow alts.

Yes, people will exploit it by transfering funds between them. But is that really such an exploit? And "individual reponsibility?"

It's a game, and players want to have fun. Otherwise we might as well all be playing a dull Microsoft flight sim, which is all it will be viewed as if FD don't implement a few of the things that MMO players expect as standard. Alt characters is one of these things.

I also heard that we were going to get three commander slots, that were entirely separate and could not share credits or anything else with each other.

I personally think that's a great idea, and shouldn't be dismissed because of concerns that some players might abuse it. If players want to use a commander slot to gank others, well - they'd still have to spend time gaining credits and equipment for that slot in the same way that they'd have to do for their main character. And yes, they could switch to an alt to cool down... but they could also play something else, watch TV or go to bed. There is currently nothing stopping them from buying a second copy of the game if they have the money and a second email address - right now.

For me, I don't care for ganking players. I'd love to have one commander loyal to the federation, and have a second character loyal to the empire. I'd like the opportunity to start a second or third character from the beginning again, without having to clear my save. I could have one character around the core worlds where the story line is, and another deep into the milky way galaxy, exploring hundreds of light years away.

This - I couldn't have said it better. Hopefully common sense will prevail - but . . .

I heard the commander slots would be entirely separate, in order to prevent transferring of credits or equipment from one to another.

Ofcourse it would, otherwise would be stupid. Now get on with it Frontier and open us at least one more slot so i have my cmdr that plays with friends and my cmdr that plays alone.

I have to agree, i want one commander for solo play and one for online, i would want to play the characters differently. Im sure any problems this raises can be overcome sensibly

I was hoping for the 3 commander slots to be available so I could play each of the main factions with a separate commander. Hopefully this is still planned.

The first great expedition http://www.firstgreatexpedition.org has been postponed while waiting for this to be addressed by FD.

Right now if we head out thousands of light years exploring we would have to give up participating in game events.

Without multiple commander slots the playable area might as well be limited to 1,000ly. As David and Michael have both said exploration is a key part of their vision it is not unreasonable to assume we will get the option (not necessarily free) for multiple slots.

I love how no matter how small and logical a request is , there will always be somebody who doesn't want it. Of course you should be able to have multiple commanders... i don't even see why it should be limited to 3. There are a million reasons you might want another commander... one for testing.. one for empire.. one for fed.. one for independant.... One to go out and run illegal cargo and pirate.... not to mention people like myself with kids. If my son wants to play great... create your own Commander and have at it. I don't particularly want him running my ship though.

...and none to matter. You have a commander, stick with them.

As for the "why can't I have the feature I want when it won't impact on others" argument: of course it impacts on others. Every feature added is time taken away from another feature that could have been added. Every feature added to the game begets more features and enhancements. You want a feature and that's fine but it does have an impact on others, and given the nature of the forum they have equal right to state their disapproval of such a feature, especially when it could have significant in-game impact.

Hello. :)

I'm almost new here, on this forum and in the game.

I didn't read every post in this thread : the following topic may have already been discussed.

When I purchased this game, I never thought that I had to play only one commander. But, my needs seem not being exactly the same as previous ones discussed : I do expect for multiple accounts only because I want my children to be able to play this game when I do not. As I have 3 children, have I to buy 4 licences, with 4 Windows accounts on my family computer ?

How this will work on Xbox One ? A family will have to buy 1 bluray disc + licence per non simultaneous player ?

Thank you for the future responses. :)

As far as I recall they haven't been able to stop people using an exploit to log in multiple times from the same account simultaneously, travel to a second location, and insta-trade between different incarnations of themselves. If that's still possible, I can see multiple accounts being a possible way to beat licensing restrictions...

I don't see how there would be an in game impact on others, all I see is someone so self interested that they would deny others the opportunity to harmlessly play the game the way they wish, in order that...what exactly? You not be 'tempted' to run a second character? There be less pirates/griefers?

If you think the current mechanics are ANY impediment whatsoever to griefers then you don't know what you're talking about, they just pay off their bounties immediately. And I haven't been griefed once, not once, since I left Eravate/Leesti.

If you haven't already, move the galaxy map pop slider to 66% or so, select only high tech and industrial systems, and look for ones NEAR Eravate or Leesti (in case they ever fix player bounty hunting), but not within 40LY or so. Most systems that close are populated by players, but they are mostly traders :) If you do meet a pirate, they are PROPER pirates who rp properly. and if you're gonna complain about them then you're definitely playing the wrong game, their playstyle is accepted by Braben as desired in this multiplayer environment...

Hope your opinion was formed of a griefer problem and that I was able to help :D

I wouldn't mind this option if not only for the simple fact that when your 10k + ly away from civilized space and want to go pirate hunting you really can't with out going all the way back. I would be all for not being able to trade between my characters.

I do hope that they will introduce at least one additional cmdr slot. I am spending most of my time in deep space and I am not seeing stations in weeks or even months. Having an alt in inhabited space to participate in some events, or simply to change a pace a liitle bit every now and then, would be most welcomed.
