Questions From a Newcomer

Hello, all!

I saw the Kickstarter campaign last year, read a little about it, but wasn't too interested since I was very interested in Star Citizen at the time (backed it for quite a bit, which fueled my disinterest in ED). I had just figured I'd wait until release and see how it was.

Now that I'm seeing that there is a cutoff date, I'm looking into ED a bit more.

So, here are my questions:
1. What exactly is changing after December 6th? Will pledging be no longer available? Will upgrading pledges still be available, but not for new pledgers? (in this link (http://elite.frontier.co.uk/register/#.UpwoNsRmySp) it says "Hurry, Early Backer Registration will close on Friday 6th December 2013!
Register with our FREE Backer's app today while you still can and be part of gaming history," so am unsure as to what exactly the cutoff represents). I used up pretty much all my discretionary money for the next month on Star Citizen, so am unable to put much, if any, toward ED at this time.
2. Have the devs stated anything about retail price?
3. Is ED still on track to release in March 2014?
4. Have the devs said anything about continued availability of digital download pack-type thing? I like the idea of no extra charges for future DLCs, but would like to try the game before putting any more money into it (haven't played any of the past Elite games, so am not familiar with the feel of them).
5. For the Extras in backing, I saw the Ship Decal... Does buying more of the decals (it says there are 10 available) get any extra access to different systems, or is it just an aesthetics thing?
6. How does the "start in X system" work with the different pledge levels? Is it as simple as it sounds (if you pay X amount of money, you will be able to start at this, this, and this type of system that others won't be able to start at)?

Thanks!

Welcome friend!

I'm a bit out of the loop on Elite, but I'll answer what I cant to kick this off.

I'm only 50/50 on this, but I think thats when the store rolls over to a new scheme and early registration closes. I think you can actually get alpha access from there, but I've only skimmed it.

3. Is ED still on track to release in March 2014?
Last I heard, yes!

5. For the Extras in backing, I saw the Ship Decal... Does buying more of the decals (it says there are 10 available) get any extra access to different systems, or is it just an aesthetics thing?
Mostly yes. There is a "founders" decal that would get you into the founders system, but thats it. Actually i think any of these will work, some one correct me if i'm wrong.

That's kind of the gist. Its more or less plopping you down in a location TYPE, not so much as an actual specific location. Except the trader one i think starts you in lave, and founders specifically starts you in the founder world. Its just an alternate way to start, no real advantage except you get a kick start toward your preferred gameplay style.

Not much, but hope I helped (and am not horribly wrong). And again, Welcome!

Thanks for the reply, definitely helpful!

A couple more questions to throw on the pile:
7. I read somewhere that it sounds like backing now with the £25/30 you get to access it earlier than after-release purchasers... Is this true? And if so, is it known by how long?

Definitely hoping to get an answer about retail price... Due to my current financial situation, I'm thinking about just getting the "Elite Supporter" (just the decal), then purchase post-release. Was thinking "Hmm... For £5 more, I could get the newsletters emailed to me... And for £5 more than that I could get my name reserved... Ah, heck, for just £10 more than THAT I would have the game... So I think at this point I need to stick with the £5. Man, if it was $25USD, that'd be so much easier ;)

...Man, wish I'd known about confirmed Oculus Rift support back when I had money ;) (that's what initially hooked me on Star Citizen)

They haven't announced a retail price so your guess is as good as mine, we will know when the new store is opened, but then the old rewards are no longer available, so...

The only thing that is going to be available in the new store is this according to the latest newsletter:

http://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=f703580f39
Alpha demo access
1st Round Beta access – pre-order
2nd Round Beta access – pre-order
Elite: Dangerous game (digital copy) – pre-order

Although, alpha access is probably not something that newcomers will be able to buy (we think). This new store will just be the platform they are going to use to distribute it to those of us that already payed for it.

All other rewards will no longer be available and that also applies to the free expansion reward as far as I can tell.

This game is shaping up pretty good, the last video they showed some cockpit gameplay and i have to say it looked awesome and that was just alpha gameplay. There is a deal for £80 where you get free Expansions for Life, if your planing to play space simulators for a long time in the long run it will be worth the money.

Precisely.

Whatever's available in the store (and a lot is disappearing), I would assume it will be more expensive than the previously and currently available backers' prices.

There would be uproar if those taking the earlier risk ended up paying more than those coming on board shortly.

1st round beta in January sometime, and 2nd round in February I think.

Pledging are changed with preorder. That means all other backer gifts will be gone, only Alpha, Beta and Final release will be available.
2. Have the devs stated anything about retail price?
I think no, but I might be wrong. Overall there's belief that price will be around 35 pounds.
3. Is ED still on track to release in March 2014?
I personally believe it is, as Alpha has been on schedule. However, it could be that backers get game in March, but it won't appear in retail till May, as FD will want to test whole system with lot of players doing MP.

Unfortunately digital downloads pack will be available only till Dec 6th.

It is aesthetics thing, indicator that you have backed game.

I think the the new beta access alternatives could possibly be slightly cheaper than the current ones, but they will of course NOT have all of the other benefits: free expansions, starting options, PBF access (which might be a nice place when the floodgates opens up ;) ), music downloads, the book, the boxed set, access to the Founder's system, naming rights, and so on...

We'll find out soon enough.

Welcome ElectroPulse!

Just one point to add to everyone else's useful answers:

3. Is ED still on track to release in March 2014?

Frontier have been tight-lipped about deadlines lately. Put simply, a project can only ever guarantee one of quality or deadline and they're focussing on the former. The alpha release is set to come in on time, but they've been talking about an extended "gamma" phase after the betas. While it hasn't been confirmed, many assume this means backers will get a game somewhere round about March but there'll be significant tuning, content addition etc. before the public release.

Thank you for all the replies!

Ok, so at this point I KNOW I'm going to be going with at least the £5, and will try for the £25.

So, I went to do the £5 level, and it appears that only Paypal is accepted... I am currently serving as a student missionary outside the US, and the only account I have with any money in it is located here... So I am unable to add it to my Paypal account.

Anyway to use a debit/credit card?

the backers app should be accepting ..... mastercard , visa , discover , american express .... as well as paypall.

I'm not seeing those payment options. I see them along the side under the heading of "Paypal," just because Paypal accepts all of those. And when I went to the add funds screen and entered my debit card information into Paypal, it said that it could not use the card.

Anyway way to bypass Paypal?

I klicked VISA icon and i had no issues at all after i done all my inputs it did only take Seconds before i got my e-mail confirmation.
