New Nvidia Graphics card needed, ~$150 to spend.

For the given budget there's probably only GTX 750Ti 2GB from NVidia GPUs that is worth considering for ED. However, AMD R7 265 might be a slightly better option performance wise in the same price range with R9 270 being slightly above the price given price limit. But I would seriously consider investing $50 more for GTX 960 if it is possible or AMD R9 280 as these two would give you some head room for the future.

If he has an AMD CPU then the AMD R7 makes sense. With the Intel CPU, it's a coin toss.

If you are going Vnidia, stick to a model number x60 and above, I got a 780 a while back and it runs everything on full settings at 2560x1440.

Also remember that if you are tempted by ATI or another GPU manufacturer, there are compatibility issues with a lot of software and games. I know there will be a load of happy ATI owners out there, but i know for a fact there are a load of unhappy ones that are trying to run certain software and unable to (or functionality is hindered) Sweet FX for an example has issues on certain ATI cards, as do a bunch of 3d DCC packages.

I agree, get the highest series 60 you can afford. 60 is the standard for decent graphics. Anything less and you start having to turn down stuff.

While I partially agree with that GTX 960 still has a higher texture fill rate than 560Ti. The memory difference is not that large (112 vs 128 just like T6 vs Asp max cargo)

:D

if we are speaking of ordinary 560Ti (i.e. not the limited edition one). There are 4GB versions of GTX960, which cost about 100EUR less than GTX 970, however, this is way over OP's budget.

So GTX960 2GB remains a viable option but still exceeds OP's budget. A 3 GB R9 280 might be a better option for the same money.

I actually prefer the 960 for 1080p resolutions but I'd definitely be scared off it with anything higher. The 280 is just a bit too old now for me, too power-hungry and you'll just end up paying more in the long run.

Do you really need a Nvidia card? I mean you could get an equal AMD card for less. I got my R9 280X for $100 used from Ebay. Seriously the 280X is a beast of a card, Plus with the cash saved you could get a new Mobo with better PCI slot.

Dont under estimate the power of second hand stuff. Lots of people take good care of their gaming rigs so a majority of people are selling next to brand new parts.

I'd have to agree with the R9 280 option. I have one in my rig and it's a great little mid-range GPU. I think spending the extra cash would be great in this situation as I have yet to find a modern game that won't run at least 45fps. Well Arma seems to run like crap, but I think that type of open-world game is pretty CPU intensive.

I'm running everything pretty much maxed on a 750 Ti 2Gb OC. Also OP is extremely unlikely to have to upgrade their PSU if he or she goes for a 750 Ti.

I have a 2gb 460sli on high settings in 1320 x 1024 and I'm getting 60fps. I can snapshot and post if you like. Maybe your slowdown is cpu related? I'm on a i5-4690.
Oh gods don't tell me I've been arguing with you about GPUs when you don't even play in standard 1920x1080p. :p
A single 970 for you will both save power and give you hoards of performance lol!

.
Its almost upgrade time for myself. I have the money for a 980!!!
Ah....No offense but that explains everything. You're playing at a low non-standard resolution. I'm not even sure what the heck that is, it's not even 4:3, 5:4 or 16:9. I can't imagine that anything even renders correctly at that res. Are you certain it's not 1360x768 or 1280x1024?

Either way, again, not being harsh, just honest, but no one cares in this day and age about anyone's frame rate at res's below 1080. It's a 1080 standard world, with 1440p and 4K closing the gap.

I have a GTX 650 Ti which does me very nicely for anything I throw at it at either high or ultra, especially ED. It's cheaper than $150 too!

Another +1 for the 750ti looking at the OPs requirements in the post...... really low power as well so fairly light on the psu.

if he has a half decent psu in there however another option could be to look at the 2nd hand market....

$150 is what........ £100 in real money? In blighty at least you could probably pick up a 680 for that price. (avforums classifieds is a good place to look for trustworthy sellers at a fair price for the UK, am sure the US has similar?)

Agree with looking for a decent used card. Real bargains to be had out there. I picked up my GTX 770 for £100 and it runs like a dream.
