CMDR > NPC, far greater.

As it is no there is nothing stopping a entire faction's members, going into solo or groups to achieve their goals with no chance for the opposition stopping them.

All it will mean is the winner will be the group with the biggest numbers as opposed to those with the best plan, most skills..

Or not caring at all as the pilot is 20,000 ly away exploring.

Why are these space games equated to only Star Wars/Star Trek/Buck Rogers in scope? Don't care about "best political plans" and "most skills" or what ship or weapons are FoTM. I care about getting a-w-a-y from that junk and exploring a star catalog that is an AAVASO member's dream in itself. XD

You know something that isn't in OTHER games???

If Eve online had solo play I would still be playing it. I started in 2003, ran fleets small and large. I was a very active member in the community but, some times things loose their luster and quiet time is important. Having to wait to rally up enough people to make things happen and all the other that goes along with being forced on a single server is something I dont have time for these days. Ill admit, it was fun for many many years but, life styles change and frankly, if I had to deal with pirates around every turn while trying to build up my wallet I wouldnt be playing this game either. Its nice to relax, hone my skills while making money bounty hunting. When I feel I need to do some pvp Ill jump on open play.

Everyone should have the right to make that choice with out a nerf. 300 mil to get a fully upgraded python? Its going to take some time. I found an extraction site where I can make 800k an hour on average. Its going to take me months to get my python. Imagine how long it will take getting side racked in open play. I would uninstall. I get about 8 to 9 hours a week of game time and I dont always take advantage of it.

Instead of a nerf to solo play, I think an increase in open play would be better. Then I would be willing to jump on because it would balance itself.

A message to who ever it was wanting to financially punish people for relaxing in solo play. The game will eventually have better mechanics for group play and sovereignty. Its in an infant state right now. Patience. There will be plenty of pvp to be had. I promise.

Buff open world income by 20%, stream line the missions, increase rewards for the missions and , do ship upgrades really have to cost 10000000% more than the ship? On a serious note, missions are not even worth running. I was on a kill mission when I found my new home with the extraction site. I spent hours going through USSs, SSSs and nothing. Not even wanted vessels for extra fun and bounty. Went to the extraction site and made a mil in 45 mins. I did get some lucky spawns but, needless to say, mission was abandoned.

Wouldn't work and I'll give an excellent example to save everyone time and money (well for the devs that is).

WoW PvP players asked for twink battlegrounds simply for them at specific brackets. Blizzard gave them exactly what they asked for, for the "challenge" of actually competing with EQUAL players with EQUAL skills.

It failed.

Why?

They said they wanted competition with equals, but it turned out people simply wanted to gank instead. Thus, those instances were dead within 6 months.

All that time, effort and cash wasted on something that wouldn't even support itself.

It's the same problem players see whenever there's PvP in any game. They keep saying about "risk vs reward"; "competence" and more but in the end it's about the powerful preying on the weak...every single time. PvE/Solo players have to keep going further and further to the ends of a map to be free of the predators, meanwhile they pay for the same game and get so much less -- and also told (after buying the box or spending years on subs, "if you don't like it leave"). -_-

How ED is set up is fine. Have an area for PvP players and an area for PvE players and they don't actually meet in game itself. Solo players can play without being bothered by the worst things seen in MMOs; and the PvP players get to play with themselves in all of the unscripted play they prefer. And those wanting to group up with friends can play in group mode (what guild/corps should've been in the first place). All bases are covered -- MMO/Small group play/Solo. Sweet!

yes i agree that it is all about "i want more easy targets".
the troubling part for me is that those people are truly the minority of players in open and yet their loud voices are the dominant pace setters in other games. EVE is the first to come to mind.
the phrase "if you can't afford to lose it, don't fly it" is so common that people have come to accept that idea as valid.

these combative "win at all costs even if it means attacking far weaker players" people are willing to flood the forums with the same tactics they use in game.
specifically the idea of "win at all costs".
so if you are expressing a reasonable idea in a thread, they will make sure that they post so many messages in that thread that the entire thread is invalid and your ideas are buried in the avalanche of posts that are made to make it seem that the discussion/argument/thread is not worth looking into.

the devs/moderators are actually helpless in this situation because they want to conduct themselves as reasonable people.
and the "win at all costs" crowd takes full advantage of this attitude.
i do not envy the devs.
if i were in their position i too would make every effort to be a reasonable person.
i would find it very frustrating when people abuse my attempt to "BE" a reasonable person.

That applies WoW. A game with millions of players playing on Open only. That game has no problems with population, so it failed with something meant to be hardcore.

We want the exact opposite, some benefits in Open, to draw in players who think it's not worth it. And it's not ...Diablo does it, and literally every MMO ever does it. When you group up and play together rewards are simply higher. Why id this not in ED ??? How can a guy play in Open, if he gets ganked by people, and has not better rewards for playing there
In diablo, as people join your party EXP, MONEY, AND DROPS increase. In WoW, grouping up mean faster kills, and being able to do raids, with biggest rewards ever. In EVE....i bet you know very well the benefits of joining a faction in EVE....

EVERY game has some sort of reward for bringing people together, except ED...That is what we ask for, not Arena Commander(WoW battlegrounds)

I saw this thread was approaching 500 pages yesterday morning and thought it had to be on its last legs as in the most part it's just re-statement of entrenched positions. Then I read the news letter and thought actually it just may make a 1000 pages!

For the little it is worth I think that the Devs have it right, both in the way the game works and with the new content that aims to encourage players to try open rather than try and force them to do it. The latter will not work.

EVERY game you mentioned has a central arbitration server. Elite does not. You could conceivably make everyone play in Open and give them rewards, but with the way that Elite P2P works - urm, it simply would not work. Besides, why reward some players and not others? Should rewards not be based upon individual players merits, and not be given simply by choosing to play in easy-mode group-friendly Open?

I'd counter that with the more NPC's available the more there are to trade with, the easier it is to persuade and influence them. It's not all about slaughtering everything on-screen :D

Trading with NPC's doesn't work like that. So with in game mechanics that only leaves destruction for NPCs.

While we're talking about PvP, does anybody know how the harsh death penalty will cope with Powerplay ? I mean, if we're to be engaged in heavy PvP environnements each week where you can be killed at any moment, unless we're all flying cheap ships, how are we going to deal with the insurance cost ? I saw in the newletter that the insurance "safety net" would be increased for the expensive ships because FD want us players to be daring. But it doesn't change the fact that you'll have to pay full insurance in case of death. So, will it be way too risky to fly an expensive ship, or will the factions pay/reduce the cost of our insurance during times of war ?

Walt, I don't want to tear down anything you have made, actually I just don't want to participate in your gaming experience, or have you participate in mine. I don't mean you any disrespect here mate. You seem like a stand up person. After 10+ years of living Eve. I just like to hang out and piddle. I don't even care about what you do man, I just want to be left alone. Is that too much to ask?

You can be left alone. Where did I say you shouldn't be? Unless you are tearing my house down in which case, yes, I don't think you should be left alone.

Ship insurance coverage is 95% which is insanely high compared to similar games. Its not too expensive.

It's suggested not to die. ;P You will still have to pay insurance if you die. It's risk vs. reward. Bigger ships can harvest more kills....but, they are pain to lose in a fight.

If you want more people to play in Open the answer is exceedingly simple. PvP responsibly. Police the idiots who don't know how to do this. If you make Open a place for meaningful interaction and consensual PvP, more people will try it and more people will stay. It's not about rewards. The people who leave Open, or don't even bother trying it, are not doing it for more reward, more reward will not attract them. Those who switch modes simply for more "profit" will still switch modes for other perceived advantages. The min/max players are the wrong players to be trying to appease, they will never play fair.

PvP responsibly.

If only people could! We'll have another 500 pages of "I wanna rP syko coz I canz and I wanna SH00T p33ps up coz I am PVPGODZ AN IM B33turz dan U!". It's really quite amusing. If all these PvP-Bro's were really better than most people, why would they feel the need to declaim it? Further to the point, if all these PvP-Bro's were really good, why would they still be frustrated with players avoiding them? And really to the point, if all these PvP-Bro's were really good, they'd work out a way to force other people to encounter them - which they have not.

So, the vocal ones are all scrubs really :D

Honestly the way you doomsday preachers go on you would think the moment you entered open you we set upon by 95% of the server. Really I imagine not many of you have even had a bad experience personally but feed off the "stories" which get put on here about "griefing".

It is suppose to be a 1:1 map of the milky way, do you reckon that EVERY star system is full of griefers?? No of course not.

I really think more players are interested in playing "easy" mode that actually experiencing the game to its full potential and use the griefing as an excuse...

Please, who is doomsday preaching? Those who point out the possible interactions, or those who unleash hellfire laser-beams without warning on new Sidey pilots?

Anyway - it's all irrelevant to me - I don't believe in favourite sky-fairies.

Really how often does that happen?? Not as often as many would like to make out. Yes there are some bad eggs but it is no way as bad as many try to make out it is...

I myself have no supporting data, I've mostly been left alone since the giggles of Alpha. However, I have anecdotal evidence from 3 other players - not exactly a huge base admittedly, but I only know three other real people who I know play Elite.
