So, just as a bit of a theory on the sim post, and something to take a poke at...
Ok, I'll be honest here, my understanding of the background sim is fairly limited, I simply have not put in the hours to study it, and most of my thoughts simply work on the idea that it is a "simplified" model of the way economics in the real world affects politics, influence, markets etc. I'll be paying far more attention from now on.
On a side note - for a good read, go check out Freakonomics, and More Freakonomics. Both fairly short, but fun to read books on economics (it's not what you think! eg - What do Santa Claus and prostitution have in common? What about school teachers and sumo wrestlers? The answers are interesting, and will open your mind to how cool economics is, and a new way to think of the background sim. Sometimes the obvious answer is not, actually, the answer.
Anyway, back tot he topic at hand...
Our first expansion was into Orokudumbla.
Now, they were the closest populated system, so, this makes sense. Also, I have been led to believe that 20Ly is the current limit of expansion (though I have heard 50Ly being thrown around as well as 15-in which case, we may have actually had a little push from the Devs, so I'd like to be corrected here, if anyone knows for sure).
So, here is my theory, and this may take a while to prove/disprove, and may even change post 1.3. I believe our levels of activity in a non-PCI system may guide where we expand to. We know that NPC's pretty much deal with the supply and demand needs to stations and factions, and that each player has an effect on a system/station that is several times more than an individual NPC. I'm not sure what that number is, but everything I've read indicates that it is significant.
So, my theory is, for each player that interacts with a non PCI system, that boosts the presence of PCI in that system, simply because we are representing a nearby faction.
The more we interact with a specific system as we get closer to expansion, the closer we get to pushing expansion into that specific system once expansion hits. There are complications, of course - many of as are probably allied to other systems/factions already. I myself am friendly with the Alliance and the Federation, and am Allied to the Empire. However, my theory still stands up in that case, as it is unlikely that:
A-we are all allied to the same factions, thus, we raise the presence of PCI the most.
B-Even if we were all allied with the same other factions, said factions would also need to be nearby, and expanding at the same point in time.
So, there is a thought. It's one that will take time to prove/disprove, but I'm going to see if I can find a way we can monitor our activities.
I don't actually care what a PCI-S member does, so long as we find a way to note down the actions, and see if we can find a pattern or affect long term. Finding a way to log useful information, of course, that is not a PITA, is the tricky bit... I don't want to create work for anyone and thus distract from the fun. If anyone has any ideas...
With that in mind, we will be making an effort to guide our activities as much towards No Choen as possible. It should be a while before we hit any form of expansion again (heck, where still trying to take Orokudumbla - so this is a real long termer concept), but if we can try and focus as much activity as possible towards No Choen, whilst still keeping up our work at Pand and Ororkudumbla, we could make this our first "test" of the theory.
Of course, other factions may have come up with this before, and may already have proven/disproven it, in which case, put me out of my misery!
Also, thanks for the Teamspeak LittleJP!
