News Powerplay Beta Date Update

Not if those players cant be matched together in a same instance.
And it is a paid expansion, no doubt about it.

If they split the player base like that it would be kind of detrimental to the game. I always figured that the first person expansion would be more about what you can do outside your ship, not in it. To some extent I feel everyone should be able to walk around their ship, but actually leaving their ship seems more easily controllable. Then when people do board your ship and what not you can still fend them off, but you wouldn't ever be able to leave your ship to return them the favor. In plus if you could walk around it but not leave, it would be teasing enough to make people want to buy the expansion :D

Can anyone recall whether the release of the last big beta (Wings) affected the live server and/or forced a client update for non-beta gameplay. It's just I'm planning a major Elite session next Thursday and want to know how tightly I need to cross my fingers that this won't conincide :(

As others said, there wouldn't normally be an update to the live client on beta release. There's a small change that they might want to roll out a few of the 1.3 changes a few days before the main client push if there are technical reasons to do so, so you might see a small production update a few days before, but probably not the same day as beta release.

We dont know which expansion will come first, my guess would be landing on (airless) planets.

However :
RPS: Those larger updates are things like landing on planet surfaces?

Braben: Yeah. We’ve said things like going down to planet surfaces, walking around inside your spaceship, getting out of your ship, all of those things would be part of paid updates. And we would phase it, we wouldn’t necessarily do them as part of one big thing, there would be multiple over time. Cause each of those, if you think of the work to do each one, it’s a major new-game-level of content. And so we’re just trying to take that seriously. We don’t want to do half-baked solutions.

RPS: How do you stop that from splitting the community in a multiplayer game, between those who do buy those updates and those who don’t? To avoid the problem of a new player joining and everyone else is in a galaxy far, far away, tooling around on planet surfaces.

Braben: So we’ve done two updates with new features already and they’re free, which means everyone gets them. So that doesn’t divide the community. When a paid update comes, for example that allows going down to planet surfaces, it would be great if people did that. Because we’ve got to keep funding the development which is what hope people will do, but they don’t have to do that, and you may find a group of friends will eventually do it. In the same way Call of Duty fans will eventually move to the later version of Call of Duty. If you think of Call of Duty doing a paid update as being the next version of the game, you have to buy the whole thing or you can’t play.

Well iam just reliefed i got the premium Beta and the livetime expanion card when it was available , Becouse this game is already great but with all the future expansions it will be the greatest game ever.

Maybe I was not clear enough i mean 3d male/female characters that you see in the lobby/bar.
I don't mind it will be a update to pay for.
But a essential one to give Powerplay the needed power.
Only giving support to a faction with clicking a button in Galnet. is already done in many games between 1998-2015

Rudolphus; (clearly) this will not come until 'the expansions'.

Wait what? Walk out of your ship will be a paid expansion? WHAT?

Yes it will, we know it since the kickstarter in 2012

The 29 & 32.

From the 29th :
We do intend to release small, free updates after launch, but expansions that include significant new features and content will be charged for separately. For example, our current roadmap is to add (in no particular order):
  • Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
  • Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
  • Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players

In newsletter #70,
Is this promised to us,
A very early look at the Diamondback concept. We'll be showing you more of the Diamondback in coming weeks before its debut in the Powerplay update.

Yes I know about the expansion passes I have one myself. However if they are truly going to roll out planet landings in a phased way with the "easy" ones first, this does bring up the quesiton of how to price that rollout. Maybe it will be "planet by planet" where you pay for each planet one by one, and you have to be a millionaire and wait til the real 3330 to buy them all ;)

To be serious though, what's pretty clear is that only very small areas of a planet could be custom designed, whilst most of it will have to be generated in some automatic way.

As regards not announcing anything till early next year, I think that depends on whether there is a secret team working in parallel on paid expansions, as mentioned in another thread. It would certainly seem to make some business sense to have some of the team working on something that's going to generate new sales from existing players, and bring new players in as well. We also have to keep in mind the capability of the development managers to control all those separate streams going on - there is probably a limit to their ability to manage things and make sure they don't diverge too much.

Buy per planet? This gives a whole new meaning to pay to play :) And I thought that Trexel was a cash sucking machine LOL

Seriously speaking, there will be no announcement in the short run....maybe in the Christmas period, since this is when people shed money more easily (they already have our money for the pass, which gives little incentive to finish quick...ever wonder why they pay you 2 weeks or a month after that you do your job, and not before ? :) ). And for sure there will be a limited amount of custom made content...it is impractical to imagine that there will be people that will add something interesting to each planet.

I expect the usual random stellar forge, exploding another universe but this time with the planets data too; so you land and do exactly like you do in a point in space: warp out of SC and see what is going on.
Sadly this is how this game was designed; it is good on one side, since there are limitless to the universe that you can traverse, but the downside is that you are at the mercy of the random number generator stats, to find something interesting to do on a planet.

Unless someone wake up and decide to make ED, as the game that it was supposed to be. But again; this is hard to happen after a game release; once you get the money, the incentive to do better is purely in the hands of the person that work on the game, and their inspiration. I will be glad if they make useful planets where you can land; and just spare me the waste of time to land on a planet that has nothing happening on it. IF I need to do a planet re-entry, to land on a platform instead than on a platform on the spaceport; I am fine to not have it at all.

FP module is another shot in the dark; walking around aimlessly is cool for 10 minutes; them people want something to do in that mode. This is another example that if it has to be done , like most of this game, just to say "we have a feature that let you walk around", then I would rather not have it, and get some more interesting game mechanics.

Now we are at the point that is not enough to say "I have this feature"; this is not acceptable anymore; a feature must be implemented to a certain point; this is neither Steam greenlight nor Alpha.

This! What a game!

I quote the quote....now taht's a game that had no beta out there, no pre-sale, made by a small team, but HECK, WHAT A RESULT!!!!

Skyrim in comparison feels like a cute game; and it is barely 3 years old?

Hey guys,

did anyone know, guildsystem will be implemented in the next update ? I mean ED feels really cool, but with out guild or corporation system however you wanna name it the game makes no sense for big Player-Guilds.
There comes no feeling for playing really together just in the 4 wings and this is really not enough for an online game.

Please understand this is not a hate post, just my personal meaning. ED is not a bad game, but miss the essential features for a online game.
Anyone knows about guildsystem for future updates ?

thx

There is a long thread on Guilds here. In a Q&A at EGX 2014, DBOBE was asked about guilds / clans / corps - there is a link to the relevant part of the video in the thread - basically, no plans to implement at the start of the game, maybe later.

There is that much call for guilds and repeated forum posts that it wouldn't surprise me if they do have it as one of the free updates, maybe even start incorporating in 1.4 or 1.5. I think it would add to the game and allow groups like the CODE to offically exist, maybe even having a insystem means for them issuing their "trade pass" or whatever it is they issue to pilots that pay up for their "protection".
