News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Has the respected opposition thought about that Steam makes the game a lot more famous and wide-spread? I bet Frontier still comes out of the transfer very succesfully. There is simply no better way in PC to advertise your game than steam, and I think we should be happy about it, not blame Steam for taking money away from the developers.

I agree that we should be happy about the sales on steam - I think they have a right to take money on their own store. What I don't think we should be happy about is the fact that they're charging for sales from other stores (frontier's store). That is not okay - frontier is managing the storefront and sales and so they should get the money.

Currently I have no idea whether I have successfully been through the procedure to get the key.

one step forward and two steps back. hard to defend frontier these days.

"Two steps back"?

Really?

Two steps back would have been if they said "here is the steam key" followed by "Nope! Sorry changed our minds and on top of that we'll also delete your game account!"

Did that happen?

Right now the Frontier store page is having a nervous breakdown and sobbing in the corner "WHY WONT THEY GIVE ME 5 MINUTES OF PEACE? WHYYYYY"

Someone feed it a can of fizzy pop.

Greetings Commanders

All EliteDangerous.com store players can now generate a Steam key to add it to their Steam library.

By generating a Steam key all future purchases made with your Frontier account will also be associated with your Steam account. This won't affect how much you pay for the game or for paint jobs, but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store remains the best way to support ongoing development with 100 percent of your money on future purchases. We especially appreciate it when you buy direct from us, but we're happy for you to play how and where you like. Just enjoy the game, and fly safe Commanders!

Instructions to redeem:

Log into the Elite: Dangerous store.

Go to your account dashboard.

Click on ‘Partner Keys’

Click ‘Claim an Elite: Dangerous’ key.

You can redeem your code by selecting 'Games > Activate a Product On Steam' in the Steam UI.

Note: the key you generate will add Elite: Dangerous to any Steam library but WILL NOT grant access to the game without an existing registered Frontier account and copy of the game. For this reason, please don’t give your keys away to friends! They won’t be able to play without having already bought the game from Steam or the EliteDangerous.com store!

Wait, so if I generate a key, FDEV lose 30%? Or steam at least takes a cut of the money I originally spent on the game? If that is the case, I don't want to generate a key. However if you already payed for the keys, I guess I can claim it :p

It just adds the game to Steam and uses Valve's CDN to download the client, I believe. Future expansions will probably be available through Steam, and if you buy them there, Valve will take 30%, but you'll be able to buy them through FDEV's store as well, where they'll get the full price for it and it will still be linked to your account (so you can still use it through Steam)

The Steam integration lets you leave a review for the game on its Steam store page as well as access Steam community functions associated with other games available through the platform. For me the main appeal is that I can quickly install/uninstall the client through Steam, but it will also include native support for the Steam overlay meaning it should in theory work better than launching it as a non-Steam game. Additionally any screenshots you take after launching the "official" Steam copy can be made visible to the Steam community hub for Elite.

They will lose a percentage of the money to Valve on all future purchases (cosmetics/expansions) you might make on the store if you link the account by getting the steam key.

I understand that Valve get a cut made via the Steam store, because that's just obvious.

But I don't think in any way shape or form that if someone buys Elite: Dangerous game through Frontier's store that Valve will get a cut.
In fact I think I remember a post by a developer saying if you are interested, buy from the Frontier site so that they get all the money.

But in light of their recent ability to give Steam keys to previous and future customers that may have all changed.

Not according to Edwards comment/response above in this thread. Valve will take a cut on all future purchases done on a steam account no matter where you bought it since it's now linked together.

This was asked previously:

I expect that generating steam keys is free, but by doing so any future FD store purchases become subject to the "valve tax". A bit of confirmation on that point wouldn't hurt but it makes sense to me.

Edwards answer:

Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers.

In other words. If you want to make sure that 100% of your money goes straight to FD in the future then do not link that account by getting the steam key.

I am lost how this can work for accounts linked to Microsoft and Sony. The announcements cant be the complete solution or truth for future users of Elite.

Seems like Frontier moderators are giving out false information?

That wording makes it sound like an accusation. I think it's more a misunderstanding than misinformation. It doesn't make sense to me that Valve could take a cut from purchases made through FDEV's store, be that skins, expansion packs or physical merchandise.

We really need a clarification on this^^

I intend to hold off on getting my key until I know exactly what future store purchases it'll affect.
(Bearing in mind I already have an expansion pass so won't need to pay for them)

If true, then that is complete on valves part, I thought they were being greedy with their recent paid mods plan but this is just utter greed: they should not be entitled to any of the profit from the Elite store, sales from steam fair enough but from FDevs own store seems plain wrong. I am shocked FDev would even agree to these terms.

This is making me torn on if I should get a key or not, now. On one hand, I would like Elite on my steam list and to be able to leave a nice review but I am not sure I want to do this at the expense of FDev's future profits.

Uhmm... A question. So, if you activate your account on Steam, does it mean that you have to:

a) Reinstall and play through Steam?
b) That you have to start with a new save/profile?
c) Or can you just activate it for review purposes?

I would love to review and use the Steam functions but nothing more really. I prefer to give all my money to Frontier without the Steam tax on the way.

I'm not redeeming my key until there's some serious official clarification.

a) I suspect you would have to redownload it through Steam to play it through Steam, but you could probably just transfer files from the existing installation into your steamapps/common folder - someone who's tried will need to clarify but it's worked like that for other games.
b) No, your save is linked to your FDEV account, which will now be linked to your Steam account to let you use Steam community functions.
c) I think Steam requires you to have launched the game and played for at least an hour to leave a review.

What kind of clarification you need? Read the OP:

Quite clear if you ask me - once you redeemed your key everything you purchase on Frontier Store will be treated as you did transaction through Steam store.
Nothing else to explain - they put it in a VERY clear way...

Huh.
Yeah, changed it.
I'm confused a bit about this and how it will work for console owners. Microsoft wont have liked paying for an exclusive for 6 months of whatever and then actually letting Steam get just as much of the profits as they do.
