Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

So, micro stuff.

keep up better with friends who are not playing ED without having to Alt Tab open links that friends send you without having to Alt Tab games all in one place screen shots in one place friends in one place that alone was reason enough for me

I've added this to the bottom of my first post:

To clear-up a few misunderstandings: I'm NOT a Steam hater (I have far more games on Steam than I'd like to admit). I'm NOT against Elite Dangerous being sold on Steam (it's a massive market for Frontier). I even like the general idea of adding ED to my Steam account. I am ONLY warning people who bought Elite Dangerous, from Frontier's own store, that linking it to their Steam account has a negative consequence for Frontier. I have no ulterior motive, and unlike Ed Lewis's replies you don't need to read between any lines!

I agree steam keys are a bad idea besides valve/steam is under investigation by the EU making games unplayable If you do not get a steam account for games you bought in a store or webshop including hard copies.
in the same way Microsoft forced users to use their software on windows.

No-one held a gun to Frontier's head. It was a business decision they made after a lot of consideration of the business benefits.
Yes. There is certainly some indirect benefit to Frontier, mainly that it keeps a percentage of their existing customers happy (and so hopefully continue to spend money on ED in the future).

But Frontier also strongly advised customers against taking-up their offer (as much as they could, without breaking their NDA). All I'm doing is (attempting to) clarify what Frontier was trying to say.

I'm not getting a Steam key. Because it doesn't change anything and more importantly, I don't care.
Good for you :) . I'm not telling anyone what to do. Only advising what one of the hidden consequences of linking to Steam will be. Whether you care about that consequence is entirely up to you :)

may want to read that fine print Steam Account required said it right on the collectors edition box of Skyrim also like to see a link to this so called investigation

If it weren't for steam, a HUGE player base wouldn't even have known the game existed and 70% profit is better than 0. After I added ED as a non-steam game, a few friends asked me what it was when they saw me in it. One of them bought before it was available on steam and 2 others after. Although I'm kinda glad they wont see how many hundreds of hours I've sunk into this game xD

If I ever upgrade drives or move to a different machine, it will be downloaded from steam cause I like consolidating it all into one place.

This is NOT an anti-Steam thread. Please keep discussions on-topic!

Luckily I read through that Steam Key thread before I activated my key.
I won't be activating if that means Valve takes 30%.
I'd rather see FD using that 30% for the further development of my all time favorite spacesim.

It depends. I am not anti Steam at all. I like Steam, I have lots of games on Steam.
But in this case I want FD to get all the money they can to turn ED into the epic space sim 'that rules them all' it can become.
For me it is a rational decision not to activate the Steam key. It is in my own interest.

Don't worry...won't be.

Urrgh stuff that! Id rather pay more and support a small independent software house than faff about with corporate sleaze to scrape a few small extras. Spent too many years playing the same regurgitated junk and now have something worth paying for. you can count me out lol.

My goodness what a silly idea. Some people are under the imperssion that Valve is somehow forcing Frontier to use their service, and that Frontier is somehow losing money because of this. First of all, Frontier is a multi-billion dollar company...

What? As a shareholder I can assure you its not and its not doing to great right now. Its actually pulling my portfolio down.

All the negativity! How about changing the subject to "DO get a Steam key, if you want support Frontier spend 30% more in the future". ;)

may want to read that fine print Steam Account required said it right on the collectors edition box of Skyrim also like to see a link to this so called investigation

The text Steam required is already a breach of EU consumer law as steam did not play any roll in developing or creating the game and installs unwanted software.

its simple you buy a boxed game you install the game and it does not work without a steam account when selecting I don't agree for installing a steam account it started 2009 with total war empire and every game following .The option of playing the game with or without steam should be choice Microsoft Google all got major fines for this.

The investigation started early 2014 when steam did not want to refund money for x-rebirth claiming Steam was not responsible for products sold on steam and found a lot more .
Web shops web stores and physical stores all have to complie to EU consumer law faulty , miss advertised products have to be restituted

If you want information of companies under investigation check the EU commerce website or check the EU Forrum.

So how do people go about un-linking their game to a steam account? That'll be useful info I'm sure ;)
you cant

Yes, I am a premium beta tester and I don't see a reason to link to Steam. I would rather give future money to hard working folks in FD. Just look at these typos in beta texts now. They are working during nights obviously with little sleep :)

I agree + 1 rep
