What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Nice find, very old school.

Got my new warthog last weekend. Suddenly my desk looks pretty small. That thing is awesome (!!!). It's so solid i'm certain that i'll never ever need to buy another one.

Tried it on an aircraft sim. That brought me to two conclusions:
1. Flying the A-10 is easy, understanding the onboard systems, all the buttons and what they do is the hard part.
2. Using any other controller than the warthog is just an emergency solution.

I can hardly wait to control a ship with this beauty.

controller

its funny tho because i always played elite frontier using simply the keyboard and mouse ( correct me if we could use a joystick ; ifyes then i didnt knew ).

but i was simply plannin on still using the mouse + keyboard combo, i really like the fact it is the default settings; yet, i have a wingman attack 2 joystick , i could probably use for it :)

also have a xbox controller but...

yeah

cant wait to have this amazing elite game !

I tried mouse and keyboard, plus an old Saitek Cyborg Evo I had, but nothing has felt more natural than using the Xbox 360 controller. Right now I'm playing around with the settings to get it to an optimal feel.

I haven't tried the game with a console controller. But I can say that using a stick compared to a mouse is easier or rather that it gives you better control is that you have some feedback from how you are holding the stick regarding what action you are currently doing i.e. pulling back and a little to the left, whereas with a mouse you can be pulling exactly the same manoeuvre but you don't get any feedback from the mouse as you are just pushing it about on the surface.

It's not suited for all games of course and if for instance it was a game with a free floating reticle, or perhaps in game you get to man a turret then for that I would probably switch to mouse as it gives you that "twitch" ability to whip about to and fro much quicker than any stick would.

Well... thanks to my generous in-laws, I was able to trek to the other side of the city just to get myself an X52 pro yesterday!

Only have Arma2 and War THunder to play it with... and Arma2 has a HUGE deadzone for some God forsaken reason... but it's gonna be boss!

I am not sure if I am right or not and hope there is some other old school gamers out there. but the first Beeb version of elite was keyboard only wasn't it? just cant remember but it was a few hurmmmm years ago.

if this is indeed the case I am a traditionalist with mouse.

From what I can remember since it was nearly 30 years ago! You could use a joystick with the Beeb version. I however didn't because I was stupid or something and struggled badly especially with manual docking which is something I had to do on the keyboard.

Docking was a terrible, terrible experience for me and shortened my time with the original. I'm very anxious to hear/see how this works in ED.

MAN! I had so much trouble even with a keyboard, I was so glad to get a docking computer.

oh and dam Thargiods

Well I really struggled to decided on what type of controller to get or if I should just use the Keyboard like I did with the beeb version way back when I was a teenager. I decided that the x52 although popular with lots of people on the forum was just a bit too far out of my price range and the money could be spent on other pc upgrades. Anyway I finally decided on a Cyborg Fly 5 even though its had mixed reviews and ordered it yesterday. Just hoping the Beta Premium isn't made available before it arrives or thats me stuffed!

Saitek X55

Hey all, I hope everyone had a good break over the festive period.

Just catching up with things today, I noticed that Saitek have now got a page for the new X55 joystick that you might find useful. You can sign up for pre-order notification and see more about the stick. (I've been waiting to find out more about this stick before deciding between it, the X52 Pro or the Thrustmaster Warthog). Have a look here:

Happy New Year :D

With the X-55 Saitek appear to have copied some of the design elements of the Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle control panel. None of their previous sticks have this design. There also appears to be an upside down hat switch on the throttle which looks impossible to use!

That said I do like the little rotary dials. I suspect that they aren't axes but probably have multiple positions like the 3-way toggle switches.
