What's with the downtime on a Friday evening??

I still work in IT and Friday is always a no no, but then again we don't want the phone calls at the weekend!

Standard 'IT roll out rules':
Monday is a no no as everyone is still hungover from the weekend.
Tuesday is a good day as Monday has worn off.
Wednesday is even better because you might as well spice up the most boring day of the week!
Thursday is too close to Friday.
Friday is too late....,

See I take the opposite view. I also work in IT in a business that's Mon to Fri so I think a Friday is the ideal time to do updates. If the "you know what" hits the fan, you have a whole weekend to fix it. Not just a few hours overnight.

Having the servers down for an update to me is fine. My life doesn't revolve around this game, I just play for fun, so they can update it whenever they like for me. They're doing a great job under a lot of pressure from a very vocal community who sometimes i feel are never satisfied! Lol

The sun will be out this weekend in the UK so I'll be enjoying that! Have fun in poweplay when it's live folks!

MST3k binge. Not saying the website, but you can stream them somewhere.

edit: I thought this was some other thread. Whoops.

I take the opposite view ... we've got all weekend to play with this puppy. One thing I observed during beta is that we won't truly appreciate or understand the PP mechanics until we have much greater scale of players involved.

At last some positivity. I agree (with both your comments). I don't see why people are making a fuss of rolling it out before the weekend - Ed has said that they have it covered and why should we doubt him? I'm sure it means they have arranged extra support staff in over the weekend on overtime with the relevant people (Michael and/or one of the producers, lead programmers, maybe even designers) on standby just a phone call away. Just relax! Disclaimer: of course I might be eating my words come Monday morning :)

I am delighted they are updating the game...

Hopefully I will get to play the update at some stage tonight.

Looking forward to to it.

Beta servers are also still up so can play on that in the mean time. hehe

It's not even going to take half a day. Does it really matter if you miss out on a couple of hours of gameplay on a Friday?

I imagine the game database is huge. They need to stop everyone writing to it (playing it), back it up, write the new content to it, verify it, and switch it back on. It's not easy migrating a DB on the fly, and no amount of replicated images of it change that.

:(

Docker and Puppet....its the way forward.

Reverting to standard big patch procedure...for any game

  • Assume Devs are idiots for releasing at...any time because no matter what someone is inconvenienced.
  • Always double downtime estimates
  • Leave another 24 hours
  • Leave patch download running over night
  • Leave another 24 hours
  • Download the patch for the patch the following night
  • Leave another 24 hours
  • Download the final big patch for the patch for the patch.
  • Load game up at 11.55PM on Sunday night.
  • Notice a bug in first 30 secs or game wont load or game crashes
  • Rage on forums for next 24 hours
  • Download the really final patch for the patch that patches the patch
  • First full night you can play there's a power cut, thunderstorm, neighbour/relative surprise visit, issue at work needing overtime, stuck in traffic on way home - get in too tired to play, surprise birthday at work - need to go to pub after - get in too drunk to play, internet is down, cat has urinated on the PC....
  • Finally play a week after

:)

Personally the news of the full upgrade came as a very pleasant surprise to me. Sure there's some Friday night gaming time lost, BUT we get the upgrade earlier than expected. I know what I'd prefer, and it's happening right now. I say "Well done FD, and thank you all very much for the hard work and your commitment to giving us very fast patches and updates. You're doing a great job". I'm more than happy to wait a few hours rather than demanding they upgrade their game just when it suits some players. Patience people !

My launcher finally went from saying Play to Upgrade. Download in progress, estimated time 1 hour.

Well said.

<Smug mode>I'm going out tonight until past 10pm anyway, so I'll let my PC do the work getting the game ready to launch when I get home.</smug>

Could not agree more. Quite a ridiculous time to enforce server downtime - very bad idea! Friday - Sunday are peak gaming hours, just can not stop shaking my head at what appears to be a poorly thought out idea here.

Very disappointed indeed.

Maybe they've only just finished it, and thought instead of needlessly waiting until Monday, they decided to release it now.

Don't pretend you'd rather play 1.2 for another weekend.

Mine's finished updating but, as is usual in these situations, the client has beat the server and there's currently nothing to connect to.

EDIT: And I've just noticed that (as is also usual) the beta option has disappeared.

well there is a real reason why the biggest software company in the world updates it's software on a Tuesday....

Not Monday as you're fixing the weekend. Not later than Tuesday as you need to fix what you've just released before the weekend!

:D

Whine Whine Whine! Whinge Whinge Whinge.

They updated on a Friday so we can play with the new stuff over the weekend. Get over it.
