100 billion star systems

All I can say is wow..

I'd heard the talk but didn't really want to hope. But just noticed the new text on the main page that specifically refers to 100 billion systems. I guess its official.

100 billion star systems

We could have every gamer in the world playing and there would still be stuff to discover..

Dalkeith; It's a lifetime of play for any and all of us!:)

The problem here for me is that every space sim that gets released after this is going to feel so restrictive in comparison. 100 star systems? That's just my back yard in ED.

If they are modelling the Galaxy correctly its more like 200 to 400 billion stars. :)

doesn't really matter how many systems are there. Named one counts, random events number counts and number of different "biomes" counts.

That's been my problem since Elite: Frontier and that only had 100 Million

I tend to agree. 100 billion star systems looks great on paper, but they need to be 100 billion distinctive star systems. Hopefully procedural generation will deliver this.

They wont all be distinctive from each other, there are bound to be some system that are almost identical with regards to sun type, number of planets, planet types... the only thing that will be distinctive is the landscapes etc.

What's the 250light year bubble? Isn't the galaxy 100,000 light years..

The 250LY bubble is roughly how much space humanity has colonised when we start the game. It will probably expand as we go along.

The Thargons apparently occupy more space than that, and there will probably be a future expansion that 'unlocks' their part of space. Although Thargons will be in the initial game as encounters, I don't think the devs have built all their space-stations, etc. yet.

I'm less worried about every single star system having a unique feel, than I am about there being enough truly memorable locations. There are lots of towns and cities in the world that are pretty similar, but there are a few that really stand out as being truly different and memorable.

They can always do the original Elite "trick". Multiple Galaxies. Though with more stars each of course. :)

I seriously think the size would not be the main concern with E: D. By what you can read of the DDF it won't just end with only discovering a new system. You can always expand on the knowledge with additional exploration, even inside the 250L/Y bubble as I understand it.
