Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

I will pay over the odds for a mobo if I know that it has Intel NICs in it.

Asus Maximus VI Hero with the "Intel" chip network is more complete than the MSI Z87-G45. It has also a sound chip of quality. This is a motherboard ROG type (Republic Of Gamer). It is very well made

;)

Thanks for your help, just when I think I've got everything sorted, An extra £50 seems a lot as I have found contradictory reviews.

I still don't have to panic yet as I don't need it until beta 2.

I'll keep an eye on prices

OK guys last post........ probably............ possibly..........

the current version of my proposed build...... http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2tMyC

I already have a case, dvd, PSU. this CPU comes with a heatsink and fan, I'm not going to over-clock it.

Any suggestions?
Looks good to me.

If you're concerned about the NIC taking CPU power (as others have pointed out, MSI G45 has Killer E2205), one viable option of around same price range is Asus Z87-Plus. Maximus HERO is more expensive, I bought an Asus Z87-Pro (Plus is ~Pro without Wi-Fi, HERO & Pro cost ~same) , not because I need or want that Wi-Fi or Realtek® ALC1150, but because it was the only one of those three I mentioned I could get delivered quickly enough at that time :).

Asus Z87-Pro is a excellent motherboard. Otherwise in the same price range there is also the MSI Z87-G55 is the twin sister of the Z87-G45 but with a Realtek network and a sound chip of the same brand. Again according to the tests, the Z87-G55 is more balanced than the Z87-G45 (for the same price)

Do you have a touch screen monitor for the window8? I've been told it's not a good OS if you don't.
I don't know if it's true or not Bruce but I heard and read enough negative stuff to prompt me to buy windows7 for my new build. Maybe some more knowledgeable posters can give you more info.
Other than that, your proposed system looks mean! :)
What controller are you going to use?

I've read similar comments about Windows 8, especially 8.1 - opted for Win 7 myself too.

Of course, I've also heard that with some tweaking & maybe a few helper apps Win 8 could be good.

In the end, it is a matter of preference. If you're used to XP or W7, W8 might be a bit shocking initially. :)

As far as windows 8 goes, you're right, but apparently 8.1 fixes lots of those problems, i don't have a touch screen but as I'm using Vista anything is a step up.

I have a Saitek X52 FCS Joystick

If some horror stories about 8.1 are true, I wouldn't count on that being a step up :p ...

At 8 right now, and while it has it's minor irritations (once you get used to the interface) the feedback I got on 8.1 is strongly suggesting to stay the hell away from it.

Things like cloud storage by default and other privacy breaking stuff.

... Besides, the start menu thing is overrated.

I hope that these rumours are true but if they are it will be a massive about turn for Microsoft and an embarrassing one to boot! They have done everything they can to avoid putting it back, even going so far as to say that with 8.1 they had listened to customers concerns and given them what they wanted, when in fact they did not at all!

Roll on 8.2 and consumer power. :)

Perhaps these are rumors. But yes, it is hoped that the next version will be closer to the classic "windows" that we like

I use 8.1 with Start Menu 8 installed - it's sad to have to use a 3rd party app to make an OS comfortable to use. There are some nice speed improvements, and I like the new task manager. Networking seems to have improved, and that ridiculous Performance Rating has disappeared :)

Having to spend another $99 for Media Center is a joke though (although I got it for free). I do like the Smartglass app, but TIFKAM itself should have been choked at birth. Charm bars? Two entirely separate search systems? Whoever decided a touch-centric scheme for a desktop system as default needs his head examined.

In the meantime, there is Classic Shell - I haven't used it, but reports are favourable.

Yes, there has always been utilities to recover the classic Windows interface. Even for windows 7, there are utilities to simulate the start menu of Windows XP. For my part I use always windows XP now. But I have also windows 7 on another hard drive
