Stutter Stutter Stutter since 1.3 - near stations, asteroids, and pretty much anything that has a model and collision

Before 1.3, Elite: Dangerous was smooth as butter. Frame rate through the roof. All ultra settings. Life in Space was good...

The new 1.3 comes along... now if I'm near a station, in a station, in a resource asteroid belt, or near a few other ships... the game becomes stutter stutter stutter, frame loss, stutter. And sometimes while flying by large asteroids, the entire asteroid isn't drawn... which makes it deadly for near misses.

Anyone else experiencing this? Sure would suck to give up my favorite space game cause a new patch makes the frame rate low when near other objects, which makes it difficult to hit targets, land, and fly by anything.

When I'm all alone in the black of space, it's smooth as usual. But whatever they did to 1.3 my two graphics cards don't like it. :(

I'm currently using two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, The CPU is an AMD FX 9370 Eight-Core Processor, and I got 16 gigs of ram running windows 7 ultimate.

The rig doesn't have any problems running any other games. GTAV is fine, Stranded Deep, Shadow of Mordor, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Kerbal Space Program, Dying Light, and more... in fact, Elite: Dangerous 1.2 ran just fine. Whether flying cargo between star systems, or in the fray in a war zone... :-/

I kinda wish I could have Elite: Dangerous back.

Surely, I'm not the only one experiencing this. Right? :)

I think like some others have posted its a sever not hardware issue, but I'm not very tecky so could be wrong!

I play on a desktop (decent spec) and sometimes laptop (not so decent spec)

On the desktop fps rarely ever drops below 60, hovers around the 59.somethings even in RES combat.

The poor old laptop can only cope with trading (fine when working from home, don't tell the boss!)

Both intermittently sometimes hit FPS 45 with a couple of stutters when first closing in on a planet, just before 'safe disengage' flashes up.

So logic suggests that it's a server issue communicating data about the system/ starport etc. For me the impact, especially on desktop is so minimal I don't worry about it.

Again, this is only a theory from a luddite so I could be wrong!

Anyway OP never mind all this frame rate distraction please tell me more about those folded Sidewinders? They're bloody brilliant! Rep for those :)

Jeez, again. Okay, there is no true single player mode. Everything you, and everyone else, does that affects the bg simulation or a PP (such as trading, combat, bounties and exploring) is being uploaded.

Don't know if this'll help, but check your SLI settings. I had mine set up to dedicate PhysX on the 2nd card - I was experimenting - and as soon as I started playing 1.3 I got stutters and pauses where I'd had none (or only the usual micro-stutters). I put it back into conventional SLI with PhysX on the CPU only, and the stutters went away and haven't returned.

Probably a combination of game code and Nvidia driver issues, I'd guess...

Still getting the stutter. Ever since Beta 2, last year.

Just built a new PC. Every componant is different to my laptop. Still the same stutter.

I would live to play this game more but this is ruining it. Combat is bad when the target "teleports" out of line of sight.

One more thing.

Why people think this is a network issue.

It happens in the TRAINING MISSIONS. Ctrl b shows network traffic and nothing is transmitted.

Can even play Training missions with no internet connection.

Doesn't the programming interface you use have a debugging mode to see what happens in these stutters, FD?

And another one falls to the stutter :(

Sorry to hear it man, same thing happened to me a while ago. Had been playing the game fine since I got it, then one day it just started stuttering and it just got worse and worse from there. See my thread here.

I have got my game running somewhat smoothly with many hours of researching, tweaking, and testing. I wrote a guide here that might be worth reading. Hopefully it will help you.
Some notes about 1.3 in post #10

Whilst your point is 100% valid it's worth revisiting the following entry in the change log for patch 1.1.02:

- Remove some unneeded telemetry in supercruise - it was causing some stutters

Now to be clear, just because telemetry is involved or data is sent over the network does not mean the problem must be network related. I have not posted the above to counter what you said (far from it) nor to play devil's advocate. The point is that there are many different forms of stutter and therefore several different causes (FD have stated as such).

All we can do is provide FD with as much detailed and specific information as possible (via the existing bug threads, DxDiags etc.) and let them troubleshoot.

I used to get the single long pause with the planets, but now I get lots of micro stutters in SC. Admittally I don't have a particularly high specced machine. In some ways interesting to hear that the high spec PC's are getting a similar problems.

I'm not sure what you mean by "conventional" but default SLI in NV Control Panel is set to "auto select" which assigns PhysX to GPU #2. Putting PhysX on the CPU is not standard. I can't say what's going on with your rig, but PhysX on the CPU is going to be a big performance hit in general IF PhysX is even supported by the title you are playing. CPUs are not specialized to handle PhysX. That being said it is interesting you have no stutters when removing PhysX from GPU #2 and forcing CPU in the Control Panel.

Honestly I'm not even sure ED supports Physx (couldn't confirm/deny in searching). Only a few titles out there do. There are many more titles out there that do not use it as opposed to the ones that do.

might be me... but the common denominators so far appear to be

NVIDIA GPU's
SLI.. (sometimes)
PhysX

myself

i7 920 (stock)
6 Gb DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 OC

Ultra settings across the board

V- Sync off

Windowed & Running 2 x side monitors

Improved performance since 1.3.... no stutters..... go figure

After much testing, it is not our systems it is their software. Whether it is a combination of loading plus network, or something in the software code it is not us..

Add me to the bandwagon; Was perfectly smooth in 1.2; now, constant stuttering. And for me, there is nothing 'micro' about it: I get a 2 - 3 second freeze every 10 seconds or so. And it is not limited to only RESs or Stations or Supercruise; no, it happens everywhere. I can drop out of supercruise, in empty space, 100,000ls from anything, come to a dead stop, and I still get the same stutter just adjusting my module priorities or scrolling through my bounties. Doesn't matter if I'm in Solo or Open. Doesn't matter if I'm Ultra or Low. And, the stutter gets even worse if the local area is more crowded, such as in Faction Capitol systems and stations. Interestingly, I do NOT stutter in training. I really hope this issue gets fixed soon; Heck, I would be overjoyed just to see it officially acknowledged and added to the known issues list. I absolutely love this game, but with this stuttering it is simply unplayable for me.

And, I hate to say this, but is there any mechanism or precedent for requesting a refund if the issue proves to be unresolvable?

Does your forum join date reflect when you purchased the game? If so I would get in there mighty quick as you might be within a 28/30 day period.

This guy here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=86133&page=35&p=2347638&viewfull=1#post2347638 asked for a refund and was refused. Implies that we only have 20 hours of gameplay in which to request a refund.

And this is a fix that removed stutter from my FSX installation - this actually originates from the simraceway.com forums:

STEP #1
1. click on windows key / start menu
2. in the search field type and run: msconfig
3. click on the services tab, and search "multimedia class scheduler". uncheck the checkbox
4. if unchecked, click ok. when asked, DON'T restart your system. do STEP #2 before restarting !
(also, you can go through the "startup" tab's list, If you have something that isn't necessary to start with windows bootup, you can take them out easily here. this can save boot time and memory, too)

STEP #2
1. click on windows key / start menu
2. in the search field type and run: regedit
3. on the left side open the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > AudioSrv
4. click on AudioSrv, and on the right side of the window there will be a list, search and doubleclick "DependOnService"
5. after you opened the little window, DELETE the "MMCS" part. only that part, leave the other 2 alone.
6. if you deleted it, click OK and restart your computer.

ACHTUNG ! you need to go through both step 1 and step 2 in order to fully disable this little imp !
I gladly help anyone who needs it, just drop some letters and I'll reply.

Stutters are the plague of all sim software and maybe this will help somebody.

AMD card here, (6870), game is way smoother now, hugely noticeable.
Common thread here appears to be NVIDIA cards.

Yep, had it now myself - first time after 1.3 Just as i passed the slot i got extreme stuttering, almost as if the game is about to crash. Never ever had even the slightes stutter before, even with my old graphics card (GTX 960 atm).

Just for the record books, IL2 = the awesome, one of the best ever! as to your tweaks wasn't there specific file in IL2 that referenced the MCS, I wonder if Elite does too, will test tonight.

EDIT: Also I noticed while just sitting in the hanger not on the pad, I would see drops in FPS from 60 down to 40ish and then back to 60. Sitting in the hanger doing nothing should pretty much stay at 60 as nothing new is being rendered, but this was constant, almost tied to everytime a new contact would pop up on the info panel. Maybe someone ingame right now could test it out.
